Rohinton Mistry
Rohinton Mistry was born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, on July 3, 1952. A member of the Parsi religious community in India, he completed an undergraduate degree in mathematics and economics at the University of Bombay. In 1975 he moved to Canada, where he lived in Toronto and worked for a bank. Mistry eventually returned to university, finishing a degree in English and philosophy in 1984 at the University of Toronto. It was while he was a university student in Canada that he began to write and publish fiction. His first two published short stories won the Hart House Literary Prize (1983 and 1984), and another story won the Canadian Fiction Magazine contributor's prize in 1985. Those three stories, with eight others, became his first book, Tales from Firoszha Baag (1987). This collection of linked short stories concerns the inhabitants of an apartment compound in Bombay. One of the stories, "Squatter," consists of tall tales told by the compound's local storyteller; one tale concerns Savukshaw, a heroic cricket player and tiger hunter, and the other concerns Sarosh, a Parsi who immigrates to Canada but returns to India when he cannot learn how to use a Western toilet. In another story, "Swimming Lessons," a young man connects the residents of his Canadian apartment to the family and residents in the Bombay apartment he has left behind.

Rohinton Mistry has not lived in his native India for many years; but like many expatriate writers, he continues a relationship with his country in his writings and has enriched his readers' understanding of it. After emigrating to Toronto in 1975, Mistry got a job as a bank clerk and ascended to the supervisor of customer service after a few years. His dissatisfaction in the job led to his taking classes in English, first at York College, and ultimately pursuing a degree part-time at the University of Toronto.

Such a Long Journey - Rohinton Mistry
Emily Myer / The Brunswickan
Rohinton Mistry's Such a Long Journey is a fascinating book, a deserving winner of several prizes: the Governor General's Award, the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best Book, and the SmithBook/Books in Canada First Novel Award. The story of Gustad Noble, a moral man trying to cope with life's difficulties, is both involving and multi-layered. The novel is set in Bombay in 1971. Gustad Noble, the protagonist, is a family man, "a man swimming in the tidewater of his fifth decade of life." And life seems good. His older son, Sohrab, has done well on his university exams. He is happy in his home, although his wife, Dilnavaz, complains that the blackout paper, which Gustad put up in 1962 during India's war with China, blocks the light from the rooms and attracts spiders and cobwebs. His daughter, Roshan, is about to celebrate her ninth birthday and Gustad is planning a family dinner, the kind of celebration he remembers from his own childhood, before his father's bookstore went bankrupt. But Gustad has just received a troubling letter from an old friend, Major Jimmy Bilimoria, whose request for aid will plunge Gustad into the morass of Indian politics and conflicting loyalties. In the letter, Major Bilimoria asks Gustad to receive a package for him. And, as if the letter itself is harbinger of disaster, other problems begin piling up. Sohrab refuses to go to ITT, the Indian Institute of Technology; the father and son quarrel and Sohrab leaves home while Gustad disowns his son. Roshan falls ill. The contents of the package jeopardize Gustad's job as a bank clerk. And the tranquillity of the family apartment itself is threatened when the municipal government requisitions some land in order to widen a road.

A brief history of Mistry: : Born Bombay, India : Immigrates to Canada at the age of 23 : Publication of first book, 11 connected short stories entitled Swimming Lessons and Other Stories from the Firozsha Bag : Publication of first novel, Such a Long Journey : Publication of A Fine Balance : Publication of Family Matters Quiet spoken, modest and absolutely sure of himself, Rohinton Mistry put a kibosh on our interview, unwittingly upsetting the balance of my carefully laid plans. I had determined to speak with him in the well-appointed bar of the hotel where he was staying, a place where I've spoken with many authors, including Bernard Cornwell Timothy Findlay and J.A. Jance "It's too noisy here," Mistry said, after an appraising look around. "Can we go somewhere more quiet?" Not one to begin with an author ill at ease, I led him upstairs to the convention level, where we found a couple of chairs in a quiet corner. I dragged a service tray between us where I propped my tape recorder, an analog device. Before we'd gotten started, we were joined by January photographer and art director David Middleton, who often sits in on interviews, scanning the subject's face for advantageous angles and contributing with his insightful comments and unfailing wit. Mistry wasn't having this, either. "I'm not used to lecturing," he told us politely, "and once there's an audience it becomes that way for me. It's no longer a conversation if I have an audience." David took himself cheerfully back to the bar.

The fifty-year-old Toronto resident, originally from Bombay, has long been recognized as one of the best Indian writers; he ought to be considered simply one of the best writers, Indian or otherwise, now alive. Mistry is not prolific, but his development has been swift and steady. His first book, Swimming Lessons and Other Stories From Firozsha Baag (1987), was a wryly humorous series of interlocking tales rather in the manner of his countryman R. K. Narayan, or at least identifiable as part of the same gentle fictional tradition. His second, Such a Long Journey
Family Matters
by Rohinton Mistry
Knopf, 439 pages, $26.00 Swimming Lessons and Such a Long Journey were the work of a miniaturist, tightly contained within one claustrophobic community. Coming on the heels of these two lovely but essentially regional books, A Fine Balance (1995) was a surprise: panoramic, intensely dramatic, bursting out of the bounds Mistry had previously set for himself. It earned comparisons with the work of Dickens and Tolstoy. This high praise is not exaggerated.
