The poem opens with the woman declaring that she does not want "them" to turn her little daughter into a swallow because the daughter would then be able to fly away and perhaps never return. If the girl were to transform into a swallow, she would no longer sleep on her mother's straw mat and may even take up residence in the eaves of the house where the young girl could not be reached by her mother who wants to comb her hair. The mother repeats her fear of "them" turning her daughter into a swallow. ( read more Summary

The Dancer
Gabriela Mistral Listen The dancer now is dancing
the dance of losing it all.
Whatever she had, she lets it go,
fathers and brothers, gardens and fields,
the sound of her river, the roads,
her fireside tale, her face,
her name, and the games of her childhood,
as if she were letting everything fall
from her back, her breast, her soul. On the edge of night and winter
laughing, she dances total poverty.
the loving, hating, smiling, killing world, earth crushed to a bloody vintage, night with its sleepless excesses, and the ache of homelessness. Without name or creed or people, stripped of everything and of herself, she gives from the core beautiful, pure, with flying feet. Shaken like a tree and in the eye of the tornado, she bears witness. salt-spattered, sport of the waves, nor the lift and bow of reed-beds in the wind, nor the wind that fills the sail, nor the smile of the high grass. She loosed herself from caste and flesh, buried the beat of her blood and the ballad of her adolescence.

Selected Poems of Gabriela Mistral
Translated by Ursula K. Le Guin
Introduction by V.B. Price
University of New Mexico Press
. August 2003.
ISBN: 0-8263-2818-0
A hundred and sixty-three of Mistral's poems, in Spanish and English. This is the first presentation in English and Spanish of a really substantial selection of the poetry of Mistral Nobel Prize Desolacion, Ternura, Tala, Lagar, and Poema de Chile This translation was a labor of love for many years. There is no other voice in poetry like Mistral's, from the miraculous clarity of her rounds and lullabyes, to the fiery rage of her love poems, to the dark complexity and visionary power of her late work. I hope this book may begin to restore this amazing poet to the recognition she deserves. Most of all I hope it comes to the hands of readers who will love her.

Mistral, Gabriela
Gabriela Mistral pseudonym of Lucila Godoy Alcayaga
died January 10, 1957, Hempstead, New York, U.S.
Gabriela Mistral, 1941. Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. Chilean poet, who in 1945 became the first Latin American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Of Spanish, Basque, and Indian descent, Mistral grew up in a village of northern Chile and became a schoolteacher at age 15, advancing later to the rank of college professor. Throughout her life she combined writing with a career as an educator, cultural minister, and diplomat; her diplomatic assignments included posts in Madrid, Lisbon, Genoa, and Nice. Her reputation as a poet was established in 1914 when she won a Chilean prize for three Sonetos de la muerte Dolor, detailing the aftermath of a love affair that was ended by the suicide of her lover. Because of this tragedy, she never married, and a haunting, wistful strain of thwarted maternal tenderness informs her work. Ternura Tala Lagar Mistral's extraordinarily passionate verse, which is frequently coloured by figures and words peculiarly her own, is marked by warmth of feeling and emotional power. Selections of her poetry have been translated into English by the American writer Langston Hughes (1957; reissued 1972), by Mistral's secretary and companion Doris Dana (1957; reissued 1971), by American writer Ursula K. Le Guin (2003), and by Paul Burns and Salvador Ortiz-Carboneres (2005).

  • Gabriela Mistral 1889-1957
(Born Lucila Godoy y Alcayaga) Chilean poet, educator, and diplomat.
    INTRODUCTION
During the first half of the twentieth century, throughout Latin America, Mistral achieved iconic status as mystic, mother, and teacher. She fashioned a poetry that expresses a betrayed and abandoned woman's angry longing for love and children. Mistral was dedicated to restoring meaning and identity to the economically and politically oppressed. Her vision of the anguish, the need, of a South American people pillaged and impoverished—spiritually as well as materially—by European exploitation and denigration was balanced by hope achieved through the Christian assumption of self-sacrifice in the service of liberating others from ignorance and suffering.
    Biographical Information
Of Spanish, Basque, and Indian descent, Mistral was born Lucila Godoy y Alcayaga on April 7, 1889, to an educated but poor family in Chile. In 1891, when she was two years old, her father, a schoolteacher and poet, abandoned the family, to return ten years later. At fifteen, Lucila began to teach school. During the next decade, she went from being an elementary school teacher to a secondary school professor to an inspector general of schools to principal of the
