John Milton, poet
8 November 1674
In 1629 (when he was 21 years old) he wrote a short poem, "On the morning of Christ's Nativity," his first memorable work, still widely read at Christmas. A few years later, he wrote a masque (or mask), which was presented in 1634, at Ludlow Castle, near the Welsh border, in honor of the Earl of Bridgewater. In August 1637, a classmate of Milton's, Edward King, who had written some poetry himself, was drowned, and several of his friends resolved to write poems in his memory and publish a collection of them. Milton was asked to contribute. His poem was called Lycidas Between 1641 and 1660, Milton wrote almost no poetry. This was the time when the English Puritans were setting out to overthrow the English monarchy on the grounds that it was levying taxes unlawfully (and was, moreover, in league with the wicked English Church), and to overthrow the English Church on the grounds that, while nominally breaking with Rome, it had retained many Romish customs, such as white gowns for the clergy (instead of the black gowns worn by Puritan clergy, which were obviously more seemly) and that the English Church was therefore just as bad as the Church or Rome (and was, moreover, in league with the wicked English monarchy). Milton believed wholeheartedly in the Puritan cause, and set aside his poetry to write pamphlets in defense of various aspects of liberty as he saw it. One work that Milton wrote but never published was a theological treatise called

JOHN MILTON The life of the second great English poet almost exactly coincides with the rise, development, and decline of the great outburst of English Puritanism, which followed the authorized version of the Bible in 1611. John Milton was a descendant of a family of substantial yeomen long settled inn Oxfordshire. His father, John Milton, having been disinherited as a Protestant, came to London and established himself as a scrivener in Bread Street, Cheapside. There the poet was born, December 9, 1608, ten years after the death of Spenser, and eight years before the death of Shakespeare It has been well said by Mark Pattison that "Milton's life is a drama in three acts. The first discovers him in the calm and peaceful retirement of Horton, of which L'Allegro, Il Penseroso

    John Milton
John Milton was born in London in 1608. He came from an upper middle-class family and attended Cambridge University where he studied for the ministry and first began writing poems in English, Italian and Latin. After leaving university, he decided against becoming a priest and spent the next six years at home, writing L'allegro Il Penseroso Comus , and Lycidas , and pursuing his study of languages. In the late 1630s he travelled in France and Italy, where he met Hugo Grotius and Galileo Galilei, with whose struggle against censorship he sympathised. Upon his return to England, the outbreak of civil war put an end to his poetic career for twenty years. Milton was a strong supporter of Cromwell and the Puritans, believing that the people had a right to depose their rulers, and published many pro-Puritan pamphlets on various issues. But the definitive time in Milton's life came in 1651, when he lost his sight and rediscovered his gift for poetry. Paradise Lost , an epic that deals with the Fall from Eden, was first issued in 1667 and remains his most enduring work. Although the merits of Milton's writing were much debated in the centuries that followed, few question his status as one of the greatest poets in the English language.

    BIOGRAPHICAL INTRODUCTION. Rufus Wilmot Griswold
On the ninth day of December, 1608, John Milton was born in London. It was near the close of the golden age of England. Spenser had been dead ten years. Shakspeare was alive, but had ceased to write. Bacon was in the meridian of his power, but was known already to be one of the meanest of mankind, and neither his genius nor his station secured respect. The father of Milton had been disinherited for becoming a Protestant; but not until the completion of his studies at Oxford, where he was distinguished for his scholarship, taste and accomplishments. Deprived of his patrimony, he adopted the profession of a scrivener, in the practice of which he was so successful as to be able to give his son a liberal education, and at an early age to retire with a competence into the country. The instruction of Milton was carefully attended to: his private tutor was thomas young, a Puritan minister, who remained with him until compelled on account of his religious opinions to leave the kingdom. In 1624, soon after entering upon his sixteenth year, he was sent to Cambridge, where he was committed to the tuition of Mr. Chappell, afterwards a bishop, and the reputed author of The Whole Duty of Man . He had already made astonishing progress in learning. He was familiar with several languages, and with the most abstruse books in philosophy. Before he was eighteen, he studied critically the best Greek and Roman authors, and wrote more elegant Latin verses than were ever before produced by an Englishman.

December 9 ~  Reign in Hell Complete Poetry of Milton
"Better to r e i g n in hell than s e r v e in heaven ~ John Milton Born on this day in London , English writer John Milton (1608-1674) had radical political and religious views and rejected his family's plans on becoming a minister. He turned to writing as a way to reform the Church of England A good book is the precious life-blood of a master spirit," he said, "embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life." Milton wrote revolutionary pamphlets to support the morality of divorce due to incompatibility and met with Galileo in Italy . Milton fought hard for freedom of the press and rebelled against Parliament censorship. "Reason is also choice," he said. Greatly influenced by Latin and Greek literature, he took 26 years to work the theme into the finished masterpiece, Paradise Lost (1667), the Biblical story of Satan's rebellion against God and Adam and Eve's fall from grace. The dense verse of Milton's epic celebrated the absolute freedom of the individual and the invincibility of the mind and spirit "The mind is its own place, and it itself can make heaven of Hell, a hell of Heaven."
