Abstract: click for full image and caption The evolution of jaws was a crucial step in vertebrate history, but it took place so long ago that fossils from this period consist mostly of teeth and a bewildering variety of skin scales. Now an almost complete shark fossil gives paleontologists the opportunity to investigate the poorly understood transition between sharks and modern fishes and to interpret isolated fossils from a new perspective. The remarkably intact 409 million year-old example preserves the braincase, jaws, teeth and pectoral fins in the correct anatomical position. Based on this finding, the authors revise the geography of early shark evolution and question the accepted picture of shark evolution as it relates to other major fish groups.

Andre Norton (1912-2005) Andre Norton, 93, the “Grand Dame of Science Fiction and Fantasy,” author, poet, editor, whose published works span seven decades, died of congestive heart failure in her Murfreesboro, Tennessee home, early Thursday morning, March 17th. Andre Norton was born Alice Mary Norton on February 17, 1912, in Cleveland Ohio. She wrote more than 130 novels, nearly one hundred short stories, and edited numerous anthologies in the science-fiction, fantasy, mystery, and western genres. She the first woman to be a SFWA Grand Master and to be inducted in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. She received Skylark, Balrog, and World Fantasy awards, and was the first woman to win the Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy award. Her love of books began at the age of two, when her mother started reading and reciting poetry to her. While attending Collingwood High School, Ms. Norton edited a fiction page for the school newspaper, The Collingwood Spotlight , and started her first novel, Ralestone Luck , which became her second published book. She attended the Flora Stone Mather College of Western Reserve University, studying to be a history teacher. However, financial pressures forced her to quit after her freshman year. She to work to help support her family during the hard times of the Great Depression. Still, she managed to take night courses in English and journalism offered by Cleveland College, and she continued to write. She held several jobs in the literary field, including working for the Library of Congress during WWII. She also briefly owned a book store. Most importantly, she worked at the Cleveland Public Library in the children’s section. During her stint with the library, she worked in thirty-eight of the forty branches.

The elements involved in the production of a beautiful sound and the delivery of a dramatic text are internal, and consequently avoid ready manipulation. While technical jargon and physiological explanation may work for one performer, imagery and metaphor speak to another. Despite these potential discrepancies in learning style, it is difficult to deny the power that the simple presence of a world-class performer has on students. It is an enigmatic phenomenon, but the presence of such experience and control—whether observed from an audience's perspective or, more effectively, in a master-class setting—can have a profound effect on a young performer still developing his or her art. With this in mind, the Vocal Arts Department of The Juilliard School had the foresight to invite Regina Resnik, not simply for a master class, but for an entire week of coaching and discussion, culminating in a final master class before the public on December 5. Mezzo-soprano Faith Sherman was one of four singers who took part in the December 5 master class with Regina Resnik.

Sites for bowel cancer, breast cancer and the carers of people with dementia are being prepared, and we have plans for many more. Methods The qualitative method of purposive sampling is used to collect a broad range of people's experiences of each condition. To achieve this, men and women who have had all of the treatments available in the UK, including complementary therapies, are identified through GPs, hospital consultants and patient support groups. Experienced qualitative researchers visit the participants at home and invite them to talk about everything that has happened to them since they first suspected a problem. Interviews are audio- and videotaped, with the participant's permission. Tapes are transcribed and a thematic analysis explores both anticipated and emergent themes in the data. On the website the analysis of each theme (examples include 'signs and symptoms', 'choosing treatment', 'side effects', 'lifestyle changes', 'getting information', 'impact on family') is presented as a short summary with illustrative clips from the interviews.

I had to leave the building before Jake even moved, I was so freaked out. I wish that this viewpoint was getting a broader exposure. I am really, really sad that anyone would take a run after Jake's fall. Now, I am glad that Jake is relatively healthy (how bad-ass is he for that?) and he is making the rounds in the media.
