The Angenot-Khouri Bihliography of Prehistoric Fiction:
Additions, Corrections, and Comment
The impressive "International Bibliography of Prehistoric Fiction" by Marc Angenot and Nadia Khouri (in SFS No. 23) is almost equally impressive for what it omits. How fragmented SF scholarship is still! Perhaps no one in the US could have compiled their list of Continental sources, and few their Victoriana. On the other hand, no US researcher would have failed to check for reprints in Contento's Index, no properly raised Anglo-Saxon would have omitted Kipling's juveniles or the horrid fate of Huxley's Fifth Earl of Gonister, and not the most amateurish filler-writer for fanzines could have forgotten Cleve Cartmill's archetypally Nietzschean "The Link" (reprinted from ASF in Adventures in Time and Space Given the number of addenda and corrigenda that follow, the authors may need to tighten their topic further. Can "prehistoric fiction" feature primitive humanoids beyond Tellus-Le Guin's green Athsheans, De Camp's tailed Krishnans, the Yahoos of Davidson's "And Now Let Us Sleep"? If the cut-off line runs between Stone and Bronze Ages, what about Paleo-Indians or even non-metal-using foraging societies today? Nay, what of that first citizen of the Pacific Northwest, beloved Bigfoot? All four yeti/sasquatch stories listed below (by Aandahl, Brown, Cotter, and Pangborn) raise the significant issue of miscegenation, and no doubt they are only the top of the iceberg.

Executive summary: Lest Darkness Fall Science fiction and fantasy author L. Sprague de Camp is remembered as one of the major authors of the Golden Age of science fiction literature. Responsible for continuing the Conan the Barbarian saga begun by friend Robert E. Howard , de Camp also produced a broad rage of other fiction and non-fiction works, including biographies of both Howard and H. P. Lovecraft as well as a variety of popular science works. Many of the latter were aimed at debunking non-scientific beliefs and included such titles as The Ancient Engineers The Great Monkey Trial (1968) and Lost Continents: The Atlantis Theme in History, Science, and Literature (1970). Some of de Camp's most popular works of fiction include

To the Styx and Beyond Cartographic Curiosities of the Hyborian Age, part 2 By Dale E Rippke This revised article originally appeared in two parts as:
Stygia and the Black Kingdoms, part 1 (REHUPA #189)
Stygia and the Black Kingdoms, part 2 (REHUPA #193)
Stygia and the Black Kingdoms of Kush
researched and created by Dale E Rippke The two maps, 1932-rough (page 425) and 1932-final (page 423), while largely identical, contain several interesting differences. The two maps are drawn at slightly different latitudes. The 1932-rough map shows part of the southern nation of Stygia while relegating the northern nations (Nordhiemr and Hyperborea) to mere border areas. The 1932-final map reverses this showing the northern nations in full (for the most part) while dropping nearly all of Stygia off map with the exception of its northern border, the River Styx. Other differences include the size and location of Turan and the Inland (Vilayet) Sea, as well as the border areas between Argos, Koth, and Shem, and the border areas between Zingara and Pictland. Concerning Kush, however, it is one of the black kingdoms south of Stygia, the northern-most, in fact, and has given its name to the whole southern coast. Thus, when an Hyborian speaks of Kush, he is generally speaking of not the kingdom itself, one of many such kingdoms, but of the Black Coast in general. And he is likely to speak of any black man as a Kushite, whether he happens to be a Keshani, Darfari, Puntan, or Kushite proper. This is natural, since the Kushites were the first black men with whom the Hyborians came in contact - Barachan pirates trafficking with and raiding them.

Chapter Seven

Introduction, Chapter One and Chapter Two Chapter Three Chapter Four ... Chapter Nine
A New Community
With defeat in the recent election bearing upon him, and the coal business prospering due to the war, Magee decided to leave Bath and establish residence in Watkins, location of the main offices of the Fall Brook Coal Company. The charter had expired on the Steuben County Bank, and twice he had suffered political embarrassment in Bath. Although he felt remorse about leaving his home in Steuben County, he said; "I cannot stay there; they have made me a pariah." Magee purchased his Watkins mansion from a friend, George Freer, in September, 1863, for $6,885.06. Standing at the northwest corner of what is today Fourth and Decatur Streets, the house was built in 1845 by Dr. Samuel Watkins, for whom the town of Watkins was named. After Dr. Watkins died in 1851, his widow married George Freer, her cousin and lawyer. When she died in 1853, Freer was left alone with the house. When he moved to another home in Watkins, the mansion stood deserted for a time. Duncan Magee and his wife, Catherine, had already established residence in the house before John and Arabella Magee bought it and moved in with the young couple.

The Man Who Sold the Moon Off the Main Sequence April 2003
Some of Robert A. Heinlein's shorter science fiction stories moved into or out of his classic Future History series after 1940 as he refined the list over the years. "Let There Be Light" is one of the earliest entries in the sequence, an enjoyable minor story with an interesting lifeline itself. "Let There Be Light" first appeared in the second issue of Super Science Stories , along with others by L. Sprague de Camp, P. Schuyler Miller, James Blish and so on. Frederik Pohl, then the twenty-year-old editor of the new pulp magazine, mentions in his memoir The Way the Future Was that he was fortunate to snap up some good stories that John W. Campbell rejected for the industry leader, Astounding Science Fiction . Supposedly Campbell found some of the dialogue too risque in "Let There Be Light". Heinlein was prolific enough that even some of his most striking stories in Astounding appeared under his major pseudonym Anson MacDonald. In his own posthumous memoir

now i have to sort out the back room's lighting circuit (the landlord still hasn't - and i suspect will not, anytime soon this century...); i fear the damage is under the flat roof - or under the ground floor, where the landlord's contractor casually looped the cabling c. 25' from the former back wall, to underneath the consumer unit - posh for fuse box - at the front.
and list the zines that've been waiting quietly on their shelves for over a decade, as well as those in their boxes here in the front, that've been waiting patiently for about as long...

PERRY RHODAN ACE SF SERIES
ACE printed a lot of the popular (well, to some people - I never could quite get interested) PERRY RHODAN novels. Amazingly, I have a lot of these (courtesy of my uncle's collection).
Originally published in Germany on 8 September 1961 as a weekly, which it remains to this day, Perry Rhodan Peacelord of the Universe , has been one of the most popular space heroes for science fiction fans in Europe. Series and characters were created by Karl-Herbert Scheer and Walter Ernsting. Arthur Moewig Verlag was the name of the German publishing company for Perry Rhodan
The first ACE edition PERRY RHODAN volumes were published in the ACE five digit numerical series DOUBLES FORMAT in the 1970's, usually in the format of a single cover with both titles listed. They were published (however not exclusively) as ACE SINGLES, also in the 1970's. This often produces confusion (certainly to me), as not only was the five-digit numbering system used but the cover art changed from edition to edition.
If you have any images for volumes not shown in this collection, the ACE IMAGE LIBRARY would appreciate any submissions. Cover artist information is limited for the ACE editions, although GEORGE WILSON and GRAY MORROW have done many covers (original cover art and interior illustration information is included in these entries). Pseudonym ("aka") information for some of the "PR stable of writers" is supplied. If you have additional information concerning these, a particular volume, or if I am wrong in my attribution, please let me know. Thanks!
