Cross Plainsman's Journal "exegi monumentum aere perennius"
~ INTRODUCTION ~
This ezine journal will explore aspects of Robert E. Howard's works, their bibliography, and why they endure, why they are remarkable, why they still strike a cord after 70 years. Howard himself regarded his efforts as "hack work" although he was proud of the fact that he brought literature to central Texas. He didn't then realize how durable his work would be, like the post oaks that dot the landscape in that region. In the words of Horace (Odes III, XXX, 1) there is truth: exegi monumentum aere perennius - I have thrust up a monument more lasting than bronze. Horace was a poet in Rome, and in this statement he extols the durability of his poetry, the durability that imbues Howard's best work. In the words of Suetonius, there is also truth, in Caesar, XXXVII, 2. The famously crisp exclamation attributed to Caesar - Veni, vidi, vicit - I came, I saw, I conquered - provides a parallel most evident for Howard's vision to bring literature to his part of Texas.

Scotty Henderson
Two enthusiastic fans of Weird Tales and Robert E. Howard's Conan, in particular, worked out an outline of this famous barbarian's career based on the original stories they read in WT.

On Garbage - Mongering
Clark Ashton Smith
I should like to say a few words anent one or two points which P. Schuyler Miller raises in his interesting letter in the June Wonder Stories Personally, I cannot see that science fiction is, as he puts it, is "unfortunately limited" in its range of expression. At least, I do not think that a type of literature so avowedly imaginative would benefit materially by invading, as so much modern fiction has done, the field of clinical analysis and sex-physiology. That sort of thing has been done ad infinitum and ad nauseum by non-imaginative writers, such as are favored by the professional "intelligentsia" of our sex-demented republic; and one of the most refreshing things about science fiction, and fantastic fiction in general, is the avoidance of such triteness. To me, the best, if not the only function of imaginative writing, is to lead the human imagination outward , to take it into the vast external cosmos, and away from all that introversion and introspection, that morbidly exaggerated prying into one's own vitals—and the vitals of others—which Robinson Jeffers has so aptly symbolized as "incest." What we need is less "human interest," in the narrow sense of the term—not more. Physiological—and even psychological analysis—can be largely left to the writers of scientific monographs on such themes. Fiction, as I see it, is not the place for that sort of grubbing. Certainly I do not think that H. C. Wells, in the tedious analytic novels of his later phase, would be a good model for an imaginative writer. Wells, in his earlier years, wrote some marvelous fantasies. But afterwards, he was more and more seduced into sociology, psychoanalysis, etc.,etc., till his stories became a truly awful example of everything that fiction should not be. No doubt, they are excellent treatises, but as tales they are simply unreadable.

Introduction
by Edward A. Waterman This version of "A Probable Outline of Conan's Career" is the original, un-altered, and un-edited version as it first appeared in the Robert E. Howard fanzine, The Hyborian Age , published in 1938. Much effort has been made to ensure that the text is exactly as it appeared in the magazine, even typos were retained. Only the basic page layout (margins and word spacing) is different from the original. A rough draft of the following essay was sent to Robert E. Howard shortly before his death by P.S. Miller. Howard, flattered that someone would be "so interested in Conan as to work out an outline of his career," then reviewed it, made some small corrections, and praised "A Probable Outline of Conan's Career," stating that Miller's timeline followed his visualization of Conan's career "pretty closely." Miller and Clark made the corrections indicated by Howard, added an additional Conan tale, and published the timeline in The Hyborian Age two years later. This essay and Howard's

However, Irene Grumman submitted cites from P. Schuyler Miller in the April 1970 Analog, which antedate it. Fred Galvin submitted a 1966 cite from Algis Budrys in Galaxy that uses "pocket universe" in this sense. We would still like pre-1970 cites for "universe", however.

Additions and Revisions by: Elizabeth M. Wilkinson, September 2003 Biographical Note: Schuyler Colfax was born in New York City 23 March 1823. In 1836 the family moved to New Carlisle, Indiana. After education in local schools, he was appointed deputy auditor of St. Joseph County in 1841. He married Evelyn Chase in 1844. Colfax became a legislative correspondent for the Indiana State Journal, he then became part owner of the South Bend Free Press and changed its name in 1845 to the St. Joseph Valley Register. He also served as a member of the Indiana Constitutional Convention in 1850. Elected to the national House of Representatives in 1854, he served seven terms. From 1859 to 1861 he was chairman of the Committee on Post Offices and Post Roads, and was responsible for reorganizing the overland mail service to California. In 1863 Colfax was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives, and held this office for three terms. He was not a candidate for reelection in 1868 since he was the Republican nominee for Vice-President. He was elected Vice-President of the United States on the ticket headed by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in 1868. Colfax was an unsuccessful candidate for the Vice-Presidential nomination in 1872 due to the fact he was implicated in the Credit Mobilier scandal. Colfax was among those members of Congress accused by Oakes Ames of receiving stock and dividends in the company in return for their influence. This incident effectively ended his political career.

Famous Cousins Page Back to [ HOME This is the most light-hearted page of our website because it is rather humorous to list famous cousins as if they somehow make us more important....which is absurd because...
  • If you go back far enough you can be related to anyone you want.
  • If you go back very far, the blood connection gets pretty thin.
  • If you lay claim to great relatives, then you have to claim the bad ones too.
  • You can drop a thousand famous names, but if you're a jerk, you're still a jerk. One last note, I got the idea for this Famous Cousins page from the web page of one Fulkerson family. And wouldn't you know it, we're distantly related!!
    TEDDY ROOSEVELT
became the Republican vice president of William McKinley in 1900. Several months later McKinley was assassinated making Roosevelt the 26th president of the US and the youngest at age 42. Teddy Roosevelt is probably best remembered (1) for leading the RoughRiders in the Spanish-American War, (2) for "taking" Panama to build the Panama Canal, (3) as an avid outdoorsman and conservationist who encouraged wise use of natural resources, (4) as one of the greater presidents deserving of a spot on Mt. Rushmore, and (5) for sparing the life of a bear cub on a hunting trip such that stuffed-toy bears are now called "Teddy bears." Relationship Dennis is Teddy's 8th cousin twice removed (via Rosecrans line)
