For the Register he wrote an article defending the Mexican brigand Joaquin Murietta, whose given name he later used as a pseudonym. His first books of poems, Specimens (1868) and Joaquin et al. (1869), attracted little attention. In 1870 he traveled to England, where his exotic manners and flamboyant western costume made him a great favourite with the literati. Pacific Poems (1871) was privately printed there. Songs of the Sierras (1871), upon which his reputation mainly rests, was loudly acclaimed in England, while generally derided in the United States for its excessive romanticism. His other books of poetry included Songs of the Sunlands The Ship in the Desert The Baroness of New York Songs of Italy Memorie and Rime (1884), and the Complete Poetical Works Whitmanesque in temper, his work is frequently bombastic and artificial. Because of his fondness for Byronic posturings, his autobiographical writings ( e.g., Life Among the Modocs

Joaquin Miller Park,
City of Oakland,
Alameda County
In brief
3.5 mile loop through redwoods, in Oakland!
Getting there
From CA 24 in Alameda County, exit CA 13 south (exit 5). Drive south on CA 13 about 3 miles, then exit Lincoln/Joaquin Miller Road (exit 2). At the base of the exit ramp, turn left, cross over the highway, then bear right onto Joaquin Miller Road. Drive uphill about 0.8 mile, then turn left onto Sanborn Drive (look for the Woodminster sign). Drive about 0.1 mile on Sanborn Drive, and park in the lot (or along the side of the road) near the ranger station.
Trailhead details
There is a medium-sized paved lot, but many people park along the side of Sanborn Drive. Mind the no parking signs. If there is no parking inside the park, you can easily and legally park on the side of Joaquin Miller Road and walk in. No entrance or parking fees. Restrooms, pay phone, maps, and drinking water at the ranger station. There is one designated handicapped parking spot in the parking lot (which also services the Joaquin Miller Community Center), but trails here are poorly suited to wheelchairs. AC Transit bus #53 stops in front of the park.

JOAQUIN MILLER RETURNS TO CANYON CITY - SUMMER OF 1907
An article by C.G. McIntosh, teacher, tells of being with Joaquin Miller on his return to visit Canyon City in the summer of 1907.
"If that is my cabin, I did a good job of putting on the shingles. But I should not have recognized it. Those trees are not as I planted them. There is a shirt on the line too which I know is not mine. I never had but one in those dear old days."
And then, Joaquin Miller, the Sweet Singer of the Sierras, took the photograph which he was examining into a stronger light, swept the silvery lock that dangled lower over his shoulder, adjusted his eye glasses and with his index finger, located the lines of the lowlying hills which surrounded the cabin of his early home.
A look of intense earnestness - or was it something more - shown in his face as he continued. "Yes, it's all changed here beyond recognition, but the contour of the hills seem the same forever more. This (pointing to the cabin) is my work! This, (indicating the sweep of the hills) is God's." And with a supreme reverence that thrilled speaker and hearers alike, murmured, "Holy, Holy Hills." It is given to many men to love nature, but few could interpret her secrets as did Joaquin Miller!
"See where the eternal forces are ceaselessly at work repairing the devastation of man." He observed the large area of divided upland placer land. "Nature abhors a wound, and even an open scar. She slowly but surely softens and hides them by some of her magical art. The steeper edges of this cut are already smoothing out, and hardy grasses and brave blossoms are colonizing in the scant soil of the ruins. These hills are emblems of charity."

What do you mean, unidirectional, exactly?
May 01, 2006
permanent link
It is greatly to be desired that Alice can create an identifier with this quality: She can use it in her business with Company, and no one can correlate what she does using that identifier with anything she does using some other identifier. An identifier that has this quality is sometimes called a "unidirectional" identifier. I'll make some claims (pun intended) here, looking forward to being corrected where i am missing something or am dead wrong.
  • There is no general agreement on what 'unidirectional' means. One meaning, intended by some who use the term, is that a) the unidirectional identifier is used with by Alice with only one party, b) another unidirectional identifier is used by Alice with another party and c) there is no information in the two identifiers that can be used to determine that the same person is using both identifiers. Another meaning, intended by others, is that a) the unidirectional identifier is used with by Alice with only one party, b) another unidirectional identifier is used by Alice with another party and c) there is no information that can be used to determine that the same person is using both identifiers.

Two articles from the Shasta Courier.
    Shasta Courier, August 4, 1855, page 2.
INDIANS ON THE UPPER SACRAMENTO. - We are informed by Mr. Harvey Boyer that a party of Indians attacked several white men one day last week near Castle Rock and wounded one of them very seriously by shooting an arrow through both of his cheeks. The others escaped unharmed.
    Shasta Courier, August 11, 1855, page 2.
In this encounter two of the attacking party were severely hurt. A Mr. Miller was wounded in the right corner of the mouth by an arrow entering there and coming out below the left ear. A Mr. James Lean received a still more dangerous wound. In his case the arrow struck below the left eye and severed an artery leading over the head, which come very near resulting in death. He is at present, however, fast recovering.

American Poetry to 1900, includes 1,288 works by 209 poets, along with six landmark anthologies of American poetry. The database gathers the works of the most influential American poets, from the Colonial period to the early twentieth century. The bibliographic basis for American Poetry is the Bibliography of American Literature , Yale University Press, 1955-1991. In general, texts contemporary with their author are preferred, and when available, collected editions are used. For those poets whose established canons cannot be covered by contemporary printings, reliable later editions are used. In the great majority of cases, only a single version of each poem appears in the database. However, a small number of poems found in some poets' collections may be duplicated in the anthologies; and the 1855, 1856, 1860, 1872, and 1891 editions of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass have all been included. The entire text of each poem is included. Authorial notes accompanying the text and forming an integral part of the poems, such as dedications, notes, arguments, and epigraphs are generally included. Volume-specific front and back matter, such as advertisements, prefaces and introductions, editorial apparatus, dedicatory epistles, glossaries and indexes is usually excluded.
