Chapter 1,
Preface
to the New York edition
It was in Rome during the autumn of 1877; a friend Daisy Miller, which I indited in London the following spring and then addressed, with no conditions attached, as I remember, to the editor of a magazine that had its seat of publication at Philadelphia and had lately appeared to appreciate my contributions. That gentleman however (an historian of some repute) promptly returned me my missive, and with an absence of comment that struck me at the time as rather grimas, given the circumstances, requiring indeed some explanation: till a friend to whom I appealed for light, giving him the thing to read, declared it could only have passed with the Philadelphian critic for 'an outrage on American girlhood'. This was verily a light, and of bewildering intensity; though I was presently to read into the matter a further helpful inference. To the fault of being outrageous this little composition added that of being essentially and pre-eminently a nouvelle; a signal example in fact of that type, foredoomed at the best, in more cases than not, to editorial disfavour. If accordingly I was afterwards to be cradled, almost blissfully, in the conception that Daisy at least, among my productions, might approach 'success', such success for example, on her eventual appearance, as the state of being promptly pirated in Bostona sweet tribute I hadn't yet received and was never again to knowthe irony of things yet claimed its rights, I couldn't but long continue to feel, in the circumstance that quite a special reprobation had waited on the first appearance in the world of the ultimately most prosperous child of my invention. So doubly discredited, at all events, this

Henry Miller and William Burroughs: An Overview
Henry Miller and William Burroughs: A Letter After finishing with the summer job his father had negotiated for him at the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Harvard Advocate to print a story by a shocking new writer whose books could not yet be published in America. The writer was Henry Miller, who described the scandal in a 1935 letter to Lawrence Durrell: Laughlin is the chap who tried to reprint my Aller Retour New York Harvard Advocate, and then the Boston police descended upon the paper, destroyed the existent copies and locked the editorial staff up overnight, threatening them with a severe jail sentence. Advocate Was this the moment that Burroughs first became aware of Henry Miller, the writer to whom he would so often be yoked in later years? Or did Burroughs, who supposedly viewed literary matters askance until Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac convinced him of his own genius, consider this scandal a tempest in a teapot, in-fighting at a college newspaper that never interested him anyway? Ironically, though Burroughs may or may not have known the name of Miller in 1935, Miller certainly knew the name Burroughs. In 1936 Obelisk Press in Paris issued his second book

"I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume, you shall assume.
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you."

Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass "The greatest men in the world have passed away unknown. The Buddhas and the Christs that we know are but second-rate heroes in comparison with the greatest men of whom the world knows nothing . . . The highest men do not seek to get any name or fame from their knowledge. They leave their ideas to the world . . ." Swami Vivekananda, quoted in The Air-Conditioned Nightmare "The only thing one can do is follow himself . . . dig in, discover what he is, and who he is, and reveal himself." Henry Miller Birthday: December 26, 1891 Birthplace: Brooklyn, New York Higher Education: 2 months at New York City College (according to one biographer, Miller became "disillusioned after an encounter with Spenser’s Faerie Queene On Education: "[G]oing to school so many hours a day, learning all that nonsense, is what I call utter garbage. The only part of education I approve of is kindergarten. The rest cripples you, makes an idiot of you. I know this sounds crazy, but I believe that we’re all born creative. We all have the same creative instincts. Most of us are killed off as artists, as creative people, by our schooling."

Henry Miller Shreve was instrumental in the realm of early American waterway navigation. Born in 1785 in New Jersey, Shreve grew up in the Ohio River valley and helped to support his family by trading beaver pelts on the river near his homestead. He became an expert navigator and an adventurous traveler. 1807 marked the year of Robert Fulton's successful steamboat experiment. Within a few years, Shreve had designed his own, the Enterprise Monopoly Breaker
Seeking his own business opportunities, Shreve legally challenged Fulton's monopoly of the Mississippi River steamboat trade. The monopoly was broken in 1817, five years after the Enterprise had helped win the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. Although the public was wary of
