All growth is a leap in the dark, a spontaneous unpremeditated act without the benefit of experience.
Henry Miller
Develop interest in life as you see it; in people, things, literature, music - the world is so rich, simply throbbing with rich treasures, beautiful souls and interesting people. Forget yourself.

Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such.
Henry Miller
Living apart and at peace with myself, I came to realize more vividly the meaning of the doctrine of acceptance. To refrain from giving advice, to refrain from meddling in the affairs of others, to refrain, even though the motives be the highest, from tampering with another's way of life - so simple, yet so difficult for an active spirit. Hands off!

One's destination is never a place but rather a new way of looking at things.

Black Spring and the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn . When he found out I came from California and knew Miller, he started treating me as if I were an archangel newly descended, and never tired of questions about le Beeg Sur and . He had a mental picture of poor Henry living on a mountain-top, surrounded by devoted handmaids and a bevy of zoot-suited existentialist jitterbugs. This picture, I have discovered, is quite commonly believed in by people who should have better sense. Miners in the Pyrenees, camel drivers in Tlemcen, gondoliers in Venice, and certainly every poule But nobody ever tells. Henry Miller tells. Andersen told about Don Quixote, Volpone, Mandragola, King Lear . Some of it is tragic, in the ordinary sense, like the Iliad, Macbeth In some mysterious way, Miller has preserved an innocence of the practice of Literature-with-a-capital-L which is almost unique in history. Likewise he has preserved an innocence of heart. But he is not unsophisticated. In the first place, he writes a muscular, active prose in which something is always going on and which is always under control. True, he often rambles and gets windy, but only because he likes to ramble and hear his head roar. When he wants to tell you something straight from the shoulder, he makes you reel. OF COURSE HENRY MILLER remains the forbidden writer of American fiction. Where once he was forbidden for the right reasons, he is now forbidden for the wrong, where once he was forbidden by conservatives and moralists he is now forbidden by liberals and the culturally correctthough what originally made him forbidden hasn't really changed at all. He is forbidden because he speaks from the dark heart of some place beyond ideology or the refinements of civilization, he is not progressive or regressive but the literary inhabitant of a place in the psyche where human experience recognizes no forward or backward, where the shadows of the soul know no time.
I'm not here to make excuses for him now. I'm certainly not here to make excuses for myself or for the way, as when I heard Ray Charles for the first time, Henry Miller rearranged the furniture in my head, where the sofa of "aesthetics" had been placed just so, against the window, and the reclining chair of "taste" had been moved ever so carefully before the fireplace, and everything was where I and all my teachers and all the other writers I had read assumed they were supposed to be. Miller swept through and left everything in turmoil and in the process said, to paraphrase the notorious opening declaration of

Karl Orend Interview (Part II)
Here is Part II of my interview with Karl Orend:
Orend "After two years working in Paris, I began doing literary research for scholars, based in the United States, who needed information in French or books that it would have been laborious or costly for them to find from America during these pre-Internet years. I assisted a great number of biographers and literary historians in obtaining material on subjects ranging from Charles Carrington, Salvador Dali and Vladimir Nabokov to J. P. Donleavy. Because I had a basic interest in Miller, one of the first to approach me was Roger Jackson , in Michigan. Roger was, at the time, an unknown scholar who had decided to complete a bibliography of Henry Miller that had been begun by Lawrence Shifreen for my friend John Martin, at Black Sparrow Press, and later abandoned. With my help, and that of

George Orwell on Henry Miller: Inside the Whale
George Orwell's most interesting essay in the technical sense of the puzzle that is Miller's status as an author of "literature" has been posted to the web, along with the rest of Orwell's published works, by the University of Newcastle, Austrailia. down under for it at " Inside the Whale (I won't comment, except in passing, on the Dead Hand I got you, babe with a vengence.) In reading George Orwell's "Inside the Whale," it's worth bearing in mind that Orwell, who after all published his own Down and Out in Paris and London in 1933, and Miller are divided not as much by personal or literary sensibility, as they are divided by politics. And there the clash of these two grand "outsiders" could be no more extreme, no more anti-thetical,, no more querulously anti-thetical, nor more grandly comic, than life even for the best and the worst of us inevitably is. At least, I have a hard time not grinning to myself, every time I imagine these two the two, among my favorite authors actually meeting, as they did in Paris in 1936: It's a great misfortune that, today in America, Orwell is best known for

Henry Miller Remembered
Elmer Gertz and Henry Miller (For many years, the late Henry Miller was considered the "Bad Boy" of American literature. His novel, The Tropic of Cancer , first published in France, dealt with the ribald exploits of expatriate writers in Paris during the 1930s. For over twenty years, the book was banned in the USA. Elmer Gertz successfully defended the book's publication in Illinois. After the ban was lifted, Gertz and Miller became friendsa friendship the lawyer recalls in this exclusive interview with American Legends.)
AL: Why was Miller considered a "dirty" writer? EG: Because he wrote Tropic of Cancer and several other books which used the so-called "four letter" words and were very explicit sexually. AL: Some critics, like Gore Vidal, have claimed that Miller was self-indulgent.
EG: Henry Miller wrote exactly as he lived and felt. He tried to avoid all literary devices such as verbal inhibitions. AL: Miller has been criticized by some feminists.

In the meantime, awardwinning applications such as henry miller’s are continuing to grow the possibilities of sustainable design.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Henry Miller is proof that inspiration for sustainable design is all around us. A recent graduate of the Master of Architecture program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Albany, New York, Miller created a sustainable building application that successfully addresses contaminated, abandoned areas, a significant problem for many communities. Miller’s design won first place in the “Component Category” of the second annual CONCRETE THINKING FOR A SUSTAINABLE WORLD international student design competition, which was sponsored by Portland Cement Association (PCA) and administered by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). The 2007 competition challenged college students from six countries to investigate an innovative use of portland cement-based material to achieve sustainable design objectives. At the time of the competition, Miller was living in Albany, a city plagued by brownfields; abandoned areas that were once used for industrial purposes but now contain hazardous waste. These areas can only be reused once they’ve been decontaminated, and until then they go unattended and damage both the environment and appearance of the community. At the same time, Miller noticed that many communities were terminating their plastic recycling programs and discarding the plastic in their landfills for cost reasons.

Acceptance
L ife has no other discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such.
Arts and Artists
A rt teaches nothing, except the significance of life.
Belief
W hat distinguishes the majority of men from the few is their inability to act according to their beliefs.
Books and Reading
U ntil it is kindled by a spirit as flamingly alive as the one which gave it birth a book is dead to us. Words divested of their magic are but dead hieroglyphs.
Boys
E very genuine boy is a rebel and an anarch. If he were allowed to develop according to his own instincts, his own inclinations, society would undergo such a radical transformation as to make the adult revolutionary cower and cringe.
Conversation
W e do not talk we bludgeon one another with facts and theories gleaned from cursory readings of newspapers, magazines and digests.
