The Chelsea Affect
Arthur Miller
'The Chelsea in the Sixties seemed to combine two atmospheres: a scary optimistic chaos which predicted the hip future, and at the same time the feel of a massive, old-fashioned, sheltering family. That at least was the myth one nursed in one's mind, but like all myths it did not altogether stand inspection.' Arthur Miller on surviving life in the Chelsea Hotel. I decided to move to the Chelsea in 1960 for the privacy I was promised. It seemed a wonderfully out-of-the-way place, nearly a slum, where nobody would be likely to be looking for me. It was soon after Marilyn and I parted, and some of the press were still occasionally tracking me, looking for the dirt in a half-hearted way. A friend who I would later marry had done photos for a book on Venice by Mary McCarthy and Mary had recommended the Chelsea as a cheap but decent hotel. (Mary of course hated my work, but that's neither here nor there.) My friend, Inge Morath, who normally lived in Paris, had stayed there for short periods of work in America, and found it shabby but, to say the least, informal. 'Nobody will bother you there,' she assured me. The owner, Mr Bard, showed me a newly redecorated sixth-floor apartment overlooking the parking lot (since covered by an apartment house) behind the hotel. The parking lot is important.

    50. Swans Commentary: Arthur Miller, By Louis Proyect - Lproy23
On the life and death of the inspiring artist and activist, arthur miller.
    http://www.swans.com/library/art11/lproy23.html
Swans Commentary swans.com February 14, 2005 Arthur Miller One of our Greatest Political Artists by Louis Proyect (Swans - February 14, 2005) Arthur Miller, one of our greatest political artists, died at the age of 89 on February 11, 2005. Although none of his other plays received the critical acclaim of "Death of a Salesman," his reputation could rest on this one work alone. Whatever his sixteen other plays, including "The Crucible" or "The Price," might have lacked in craftsmanship they more than made up for in terms of political and social insight. For Miller the ultimate goal of a work of art was to provide some kind of lesson for humanity. If some critics in this age of postmodernist irony deemed that old-fashioned, Miller was content as we on the left should be to adopt the stance embodied in Dante's: "Segui il tuo corso e lascia dir le genti." This dictum, which Marx cited in the opening pages of Capital, means "Go your own way and let people talk." Although his father was a wealthy garment manufacturer, the Depression would reduce the family to poverty. Like fellow New Yorker and Jew Howard Zinn, Miller eventually went to work in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a hotbed of labor radicalism. Like Zinn, Miller never joined the Communist Party but was content to speak out against injustice on his own. Zinn's medium was history and Miller's was the theater. Both knew who the enemy was and refused to be cowed into political submission, standing up to witch hunters in the 1950s and '60s. Now with efforts afoot to launch a new McCarthyism against dissidents in the academy, such as Ward Churchill or Mohammad S. Alam, the heroic example of earlier resisters should serve the movement well.

ARTHUR MILLER QUOTES I think the tragic feeling is invoked in us when we are in the presence of a character who is ready to lay down his life, if need be, to secure one thing his sense of personal dignity. ARTHUR MILLER, "Tragedy and the Common Man" A small man can be just as exhausted as a great man. ARTHUR MILLER, Death of a Salesman Theology, sir, is a fortress; no crack in a fortress may be accounted small. ARTHUR MILLER, The Crucible One had the right to write because other people needed news of the inner world, and if they went too long without such news they would go mad with the chaos of their lives. ARTHUR MILLER, "The Shadows of the Gods" I do not believe that any work of art can help but be diminished by its adherence at any cost to a political program ... and not for any other reason than that there is no political program any more than there is a theory of tragedy which can encompass the complexities of real life. ARTHUR MILLER, Introduction to Collected Plays The Jungle is dark but full of diamonds.

Post Date: September 10, 2004 A member of the HLS faculty since 1971, Professor Arthur Miller discusses his teaching career, the state of the legal profession and "My Cousin Vinny." This year marks the 35th anniversary of your treatise on federal practice and procedure. I actually started working on it with Charles Alan Wright close to 40 years ago, so it’s been a major part of my professional life. We originally envisioned a treatise of somewhere around five volumes. Now, with all of its parts, it’s over 30 volumes, and I have responsibilities in about 15 or 18. I have taken it as a commitment for life simply because my name is on the spine, and I feel the only way to have quality control is to keep participating. My attitude toward that is heightened with the death of Charlie a couple years ago. He was a great man, a great friend, a great co-worker, and I miss him. I feel that, by continuing my involvement, I’m continuing his involvement. Are you surprised by the treatise’s longevity?
