Recuerdo
We were very tired, we were very merry
We had gone back and forth all night upon the ferry.
It was bare and bright, and smelled like a stable
But we looked into a fire, we leaned across a table,
We lay on the hill-top underneath the moon;
And the whistles kept blowing, and the dawn came soon. We were very tired, we were very merry
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry;
And you ate an apple, and I ate a pear,
From a dozen of each we had bought somewhere;
And the sky went wan, and the wind came cold,
And the sun rose dripping, a bucketful of gold. We were very tired, we were very merry, We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry. We hailed, "Good morrow, mother!" to a shawl-covered head, And bought a morning paper, which neither of us read; And she wept, "God bless you!" for the apples and the pears, And we gave her all our money but our subway fares.

Ebb by Edna St. Vincent Millay
I know what my heart is like
Since your love died:
It is like a hollow ledge
Holding a little pool
Left there by the tide,
A little tepid pool,
Drying inward from the edge. Posted by Clarica at 11:01 AM

Vallance Review 43, March 2005 "Fatal Interview" with Edna Saint Vincent Millay
Edna Saint Vincent Millay (1892-1950)
In 1931 Millay published Fatal Interview , a volume of 52 sonnets in celebration of a recent love affair (with George Dillon in Paris, 1928). Edmund Wilson claimed the book contained some of the greatest poems of the 20th century [2]. Edna Saint Vincent Millay (1892-1950) Biography [1] The Harp Weaver, and Other Poems , was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1922. Millay's Penchant for Left Wing Politics [2]: Once she had left Vassar College, Millay settled in bohemian Greenwich Village, where she began to court men. There she got involved in the left-wing journal, The Masses , joining her male comrades in their campaign against America's involvement in the First World War. In 1927, Millay got herself into hot water when she protested loudly against the execution of two Spanish activists in Boston. In fact, the demonstration was incitement enough for Millay to publish The Buck and the Snow (1928), which featured highly politicized poems like, "Hangman's Oak", "The Anguish" and "To Those Without Pity". "Thou art not lovelier than lilacs..."
Thou art not lovelier than lilacs,no,
Nor honeysuckle; thou art not more fair
Than small white single poppies,I can bear
Thy beauty; though I bend before thee, though
From left to right, not knowing where to go,
I turn my troubled eyes, nor here nor there
Find any refuge from thee, yet I swear
So has it been with mist,with moonlight so.
Like him who day by day unto his draught
Of delicate poison adds him one drop more
Till he may drink unharmed the death of ten,
Even so, inured to beauty, who have quaffed
Each hour more deeply than the hour before,
I drinkand livewhat has destroyed some men.
"Time does not bring relief..."
Time does not bring relief; you all have lied
Who told me time would ease me of my pain!

September 17, 2001 A New Day for Ms. Millay Cathleen McGuigan Still tacked above Nancy Milford's desk in Greenwich Village is a photo of two women taken 20 years ago. One is Milford’s long dig into the poet’s life is sure to reignite interest in Millay’s poetry. (There’s also another new biography, “What Lips my Kips have kissed”, by Daniel Marl Epstein.) Even by the time of her dead in 1950 – she pitched down the stairs one night and broke her neck, at the age of 58 – Edna St. Vincent Millay had drifted out of fashion. But everybody remembered these prophetic lines: My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night; But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends – It gives a lovely light! Her life was an incendiary cocktail of literary ambition, fame, sexual adventure and addiction. In 1932, she became the first woman to win a Pulitzer Prize in poetry; the public, fascinated by her passionate, provocative verse, flocked to her cross-country reading tours as if she were a pop star. The oldest of three sisters, Millay was raised in poverty in Maine by a mother determined to foster her children’s talents. Edna’s first poems were published when she was still a teenager; they won her a patron, who sent her to Vassar, where she had her first love affair, with a woman. In the ‘20s, she lived a bohemian life in

Towards the end of their affair, Dell was distracted by more serious matters, like World War I military service and a possible jail term for taking part in the publication of The Masses , which the U.S. government considered seditious literature. Millay, Edna Saint Vincent (1892-1950)
page: Poet and playwright Edna Saint Vincent Millay expressed her bisexuality in both her life and her work. Like all persons heavily scrutinized by the public eye, Millay always had to pay some deference to the reputation that preceded her. She achieved fame early on in life as the pretty, petite "It Girl" of poetry, a characterization that always followed her. Her turn toward politics and social criticism in the 1930s was unpalatable to manysome critics accused her of prostituting her talentas if that move was inappropriate for her. Sponsor Message.
The irony of that resistance is that Millay's work and life was about playing but also transcending prescribed social roles; she habitually complicated set norms and stereotypes, and confronted and embraced supposedly contradictory positions. Millay is a poet well known to a wide reading audience: Our understanding of her personality has no doubt been limited by her fame and by a public unwillingness to allow her the complexity we demand of literary figures who have not achieved her popular appeal.
