Edna St.Vincent Millay
Edna St. Vincent Millay is buried in the Steepletop Cemetery, Austerlitz, Columbia County, New York, USA. (See map...ref no. 15) After studying at Vassar, Millay moved to Greenwich Village and lived the life of an impoverished writer. During this time she had a number of affairs with both men and women (including the novelist Floyd Dell.) In 1923 Millay married Eugen Boissevain - the widower of Inez Milholland. Although their marriage was an open one, it lasted for 26 years. Millay had a number of affairs while married - including one with George Dillon who was fourteen years her junior. Her relationship with Dillon inspired her to write her 52-sonnet sequence Fatal Interview (1931). She later went on to translate

Edna St. Vincent Millay exhibit opens July 16 near West Stockbridge
Pulitzer Prize winning poet Edna St. Vincent Millay made her home at the farm she called Steepletop, located off Route 22 in Austerlitz, NY, just over the mountain from West Stockbridge. She wrote most of her major works between 1925 and her death in 1950 while in residence there.
This summer the Millay Society, under the direction of local author Peter Bergman, will be offering a unique look at Millay and her fammily and some of their extraordinary work in an exhibition entitled:
INVOCATION TO THE MUSES: MILLAY FAMILY PORTRAITS AND ARTIFACTS.

Edna St. Vincent Millay was characterized as one of the greatest (women) lyricists of the Twentieth Century. She is known as one of the greatest sonnet writers of all time, with her soft style and striking connotations. Millay has been described as a tease and a tomboy. Her mother urged her and her two younger sisters, Norma and Kathleen to be independent and ambitious. It is rumored that her mother taught her to write verse by the age four, and her first poem that was published she wrote at fourteen. She studied as a child to become a concert pianist, and became successful with music and literature composition, and was a playwright. Millay was a flamboyant twenties feminist, who didn't care to follow the rules set by a society of men, but rather create her own. She was described as "only five feet tall, with red hair, changeable green eyes, and a melodious voice." It was also said that she had an, "intoxicating affect on people." (Edmund Wilson) Chronology
1892-Edna St. Vincent Millay was born to Henry Tolman Millay and Cora Lounella (Buzelle) Millay, in Rockland, Maine on February 22nd.

To please her strong-minded mother , 20 year old Edna entered her 214-line poem Renascence into a contest and won fourth place and publication. Style Spring, 1995 by Irene R. Fairley Although part of the Pulitzer-Prize-winning Harp-Weaver (1924),(1) Edna St. Vincent Millay's "Sonnets from an Ungrafted Tree" was regarded by many critics as inferior and still tends to receive less attention than Millay's other sonnet sequences. However, I believe it is the one that is thematically most imaginative and most inventive within the genre. As they narrate a woman's inner struggle, these sonnets merge women's speech in its various forms, from gossip to story telling to diary, and as such represent an important development. To achieve her dramatic purpose, Millay uses a range of sonnet structures, but she also experiments with form. Millay's sonnets have been identified as "reflective in theme" (Sterner 112). I will argue that here she develops sonnets that are reflective in form in order to reveal the process of a woman's emerging self-knowledge.
