  • After several years of collaborating on plays that have disappeared, or at least have not come down to us with his name securely attached, Thomas Middleton in 1603 made his first surviving unassisted contribution to the English stage.  Composed in anticipation of King James' arrival in London following the death of Elizabeth, The Phoenix has been generally understood to be a play intended to entertain or instruct the new king.   Like the closely contemporary and in many ways closely related Measure for Measure , the play portrays the English court and society under a foreign guise and orders its plot around the uncovering of societal ills by a disguised magistrate.   Following a practice popularized by Jonson in comedy and Marston in tragedy, Middleton locates his action in Italy, in English eyes the homeland of Machiavellian intrigue and sexual perversion.  Framing episodes in the city and countryside are the long opening and closing scenes in the court of Ferrara, chosen probably because it was the site of a bitter and prolonged struggle over succession that had recently come to a notorious end when, in the absence of a legitimate heir, the Este court reverted in 1597 to papal rule.

PREVIOUS ISSUES Y’are the deed’s creature”: Questioning Personal Autonomy in Thomas Middleton’s The Changeling Doohyun Park, Ph.D. candidate, English Characters in Thomas Middleton’s dramas mostly provide us with unique signifying types, private desires that are pursued within social rules and values, and, at the same time, self-presentations that affect their private values at the expense of public identity. Both private and public self are ingeniously interacting within the social value system, as it were, so that for Middleton, the scenes of self-creation are far more sophisticated than those established by Shakespearean heroes. Middletonian heroes and heroines often see public responsibility (for example, a moral obligation like filial duty) as incorporated into private attributes—for example, most characters in A Chaste Maid in Cheapside and A Trick to Catch the Old One are preoccupied with their private self-interests and desires.

Thomas Middleton's and Thomas Dekker's The Roaring Girl
    Gender Obstruction and Re-inscription
It would be a feeble argument to say that Renaissance England was anything more than a hierarchical, sex-negative, and oppressive environment for women. The shadings between the gender-constructions did not exist: The model, a divisive binary, was so one-dimensional that the concept of shade is laughable. Men were seen as the perfect specimen, while women remained unemployed in their role, only as subservient workers to the men who ruled over them. Attempts to counter the pre-existing the social and sexual order was seen as disastrously reinscriptive (Dollimore, 54): In their flights of subversion, the women represented in Renaissance texts only reaffirm the pre-existing gender constructions. Their status becomes one of deviance, not of well-thought determination; their location becomes dislocation; their stabbing criticisms at masculinity fatally wounds and tears at the voice-box of their plight. In this paper, I will attempt to uncover the layers of female gender-role resistance as represented in the Renaissance catalog, examining, among others, Thomas Middleton's and Thomas Dekker's The Roaring Girl.
Jonathan Dollimore, whose dangerously delicious essay, "Subjectivity, Sexuality, and Transgression" informs and prompts much of this paper, offers Renaissance presets: "In the Renaissance also the individual was seen as constituted by and in relation to - even the effect of - a pre-existing order." (Dollimore, 54). Among that pre-existing order was humanist, Sir Thomas Elyot's statement (modernized by Stephen Orgel):

From Chris Cleary's Middleton site The Jacobean periodfrom the accession of James I in 1603 was rich in satire and tragedy, perhaps partly because of the change of mood that came with the death of Elizabeth. His range extends beyond these traditional genres to tragicomedies, masques, pageants, pamphlets, epigrams, and Biblical and political commentaries, written alone or in collaboration with Thomas Dekker, Thomas Heywood, William Rowley, William Shakespeare, John Webster, and others. Compared by critics to Aristophanes and Ibsen, Racine and Joe Orton, he has influenced writers as diverse as Aphra Behn and T. S. Eliot. Though repeatedly censored in his own time, he has since come to be particularly admired for his representations of the intertwined pursuits of sex, money, power, and God. The Oxford Middleton , prepared by more than sixty scholars from a dozen countries, follows the precedent of The Oxford Shakespeare in being published in two volumes, an innovative but accessible Collected Works and a comprehensive scholarly Companion . Though closely connected, each volume can be used independently of the other.
