'A common playhouse to waft company': Middleton's Globe
In the world of Elizabethan theatregoing, there was no such idea as a run of one play. No work, no matter the esteem in which we now hold the playwright, was performed for two days in succession. It seems the rotation of titles was a way of keeping a limited audience interested, to persuade punters away from rival amphitheatres. The practice continued for most of King James’ reign – it did not buckle at the successes of Shakespeare, nor the enduring popularity of Marlowe – and not until August 1624 do we find records of a play acted two days in a row. That play was A Game at Chesse ; its author was Thomas Middleton, and the actors of the Globe did not stop at two performances, but played it nine days in succession, each of them to a full house. Why did the King’s Men flout the firm practices of theatre management? Because they could? Certainly. Perhaps, however, they knew immediately the volatility of the work. Perhaps they recognised the pressing need to squeeze in as many performances as possible before the State realised the play’s satirically subversive power: Anglo-Spanish relations were stylised and made explicit by Middleton, with contemporary figures cast as chess pieces; King James I of England and King Phillip IV of Spain, the White King and Black King respectively. A number of contemporary accounts hold that in some of those nine days, the production was performed twice – another alien concept in its time.

  • Thomas Middleton 1580–1627
    English poet and playwright
    INTRODUCTION
Middleton is considered one of the finest English playwrights of the Jacobean period, ranked by some critics behind only William Shakespeare and Ben Jonson. A productive writer and frequent collaborator, he composed some thirty plays, as well as poetry, prose pamphlets, masques, and pageants with such contemporaries as Thomas Dekker, William Rowley, and John Webster. Some scholars argue that he even collaborated with Shakespeare on Timon of Athens and was the anonymous reviser of Macbeth (which includes two songs from Middleton's The Witch ). Middleton's plays are noted for their intricate plotting and moral complexity. His comedies, including most notably The Roaring Girl (1611) and A Chaste Maid in Cheapside (c. 1613), are among the first so-called "city comedies" about middle-class London life. His greatest tragedies, including

THOMAS MIDDLETON This biography was originally published in A New General Biographical Dictionary. Hugh James Rose. London, 1857. pp. 129-30. THOMAS MIDDLETON was a dramatic writer in the reigns of Elizabeth, James I, and Charles I. He joined Ben Jonson Philip Massinger John Fletcher , and William Rowley in the composition of some dramatic pieces. His own plays are very numerous; three of them, A Mad World, my Masters; The Mayor of Queenborough; and The Roaring Girl, are in Dodsley's Collection. The heroine in the last-mentioned play is a real character the notorious Moll Cutpurse, who was introduced by Nathan Field, a contemporary dramatist, in his piece, Amends for Ladies. A play of Middleton's, called The Witch, has gained celebrity from the circumstance that Shakespeare is supposed by some to have borrowed from it his incantations in Macbeth Middleton was born about 1570, and died in 1627. What are these?
Thursday, 23 February 2006 Why aren't the plays of Thomas Middleton a proud staple of the repertoire? Consider his credentials. With The Changeling, he created the finest Jacobean tragedy outside Shakespeare. He also penned the smash hit of the period. A brilliant allegorical satire attacking the Catholic Church and the peace negotiations between England and Spain, A Game at Chess packed out the Globe for an unprecedented nine-day run in August 1624 before the Privy Council closed the theatre and issued a warrant for the author's arrest. Where other Jacobean dramatists had gaps in their armoury, Middleton produced striking work in all the available theatrical genres. He was a leading exponent of the new form of "city comedy", transplanting wily intrigue-plots from Roman drama to a racy, slangy, pungently specific contemporary London scene.

hen Thomas Middleton was born on this day, January 28, 1769 at Kedleston, Derbyshire, England, no one knew that one day he would be awarded with one of the greatest tasks ever given a man. Twenty-three years later, after completing studies at Cambridge University, he was ordained in the Church of England. His future still was not apparent. For the next twenty-two years, he served in various church positions and earned distinction for research on the use of the Greek article, that is, the word that we translate "the." Britain had conquered India. Evangelical Christians saw in this fact a God-given obligation to govern wisely, to spread the gospel among those who had never heard it and to prepare India for self-rule. They agitated for the appointment of a bishop to India.

  • Characteristically, traditional literary criticism has read Thomas Middleton's comedies as quasi-naturalistic representations of the social changes engendered by the early modern processes of urbanisation, the decline of the aristocracy, the concomitant rise to economic and social power of the citizen classes of London and the transformations in moral and social norms that these brought about. In T. S. Eliot's words, Middleton "has no message; he is merely a great recorder." As such, he is the greatest "realist" in Jacobean comedy, in that his drama "introduces us to the low life of the time better than anything in the comedy of Shakespeare or the comedy of Jonson, better than anything except the pamphlets of Dekker and Greene and Nashe" (169). In turn, in L. C. Knights's revision of this argument, the notion of Middleton's realism as mimesis or accurate reflection of social life is underscored by the deployment of something like a basic notion of typification. The background that Middleton, with his stylised characterisations, "implicitly asks his audience to accept," Knights argues, "is a world of thriving citizens, needy gallants and landed gentlemen," a world which finds its privileged historical referent in "a major social movement - the transference of land from the older gentry to the citizen middle class" (261-262).
