Middleton was born in London and baptized on April 18 1580. He was the son of a bricklayer who had been raised to the status of a gentleman. His father died when Middleton was very young; his mother's remarriage devolved into a lengthy battle over the inheritance of Thomas and his younger sister. Though it has been claimed that Middleton attended Christ’s Hospital school, no scholarly evidence for this claim has been published. He did attend Queen’s College, Oxford

The Collected Works of Thomas Middleton
John Jowett , Deputy Director of the Shakespeare Institute, is an Associate General Editor of this Project. The Collected Works brings together for the first time in a single volume all the works currently attributed to Middleton. The texts are printed in modern spelling and punctuation, with critical introductions and foot-of-the-page commentaries; they are arranged in chronological order, with a special section of Juvenilia. The volume is introduced by essays on Middleton's life and reputation, on early modern London, and on the varied theatres of the English Renaissance. Extensively illustrated, it incorporates much new information on Middleton's life, canon, texts, and contexts; twenty percent of the works included have never before been annotated. A self-consciously 'federal edition', The Collected Works applies postmodernist theory to editorial practice; its unusual features are described and explained in "How to Use This Book." Thomas Middleton and Early Modern Textual Culture: A Companion to The Collected Works. Because Middleton is more representative than any of his contemporaries of the full range of textual practices in early modern England, his works provide an ideal focus for understanding the history of the book, and its relation to the larger history of culture, in this pivotal period. This volume begins, accordingly, with nine original essays placing Middleton's career in the context of larger cultural patterns governing the creation, reproduction, circulation, and reception of texts. These essays are followed by textual introductions and full editorial apparatus for each work in the Collected Works, including an account of evidence for their authorship and date of composition. This combination of detail and context provides a foundation for future studies both of Middleton and of early modern culture.

This website grew out of my desire to have the plays of Thomas Middleton in one collection, personally edited and available on word processor. Having done that, I thought it worthwhile to take the next step and bring Middleton to the Web. One inspiration was seeing what a convenient resource there is in a Complete Online Shakespeare , which I usedalong with the OED, a Bible search engine , and other resources, electronic and hard-printto edit these plays. In editing, I've consulted quarto facsimiles and critical editions when and where available, and I've hypertexted significant textual decisions, along with glossed words and phrases; so while these editions are not refereed, a good deal of care has been taken in their preparation. The primary reason for these plays being here is the same as for my gathering them together for myselfto be enjoyed. At the end of the project I plan to put each play's textual apparatus online, as well provide a separate and central database for glossary items. If you just happened to surf to this site, would like a quick overview of Middleton's life and have subscribed to Encyclopedia Britannica, click

Executive summary: A Game at Chess English dramatist, son of William Middleton, was born about 1570, probably in London. There is no proof that he studied at either university, but he may be safely identified with one of the Thomas Middletons entered at Gray's Inn in 1593 and 1596 respectively. He began to write for the stage with The Old Law , in the original draft of which, if it dates from 1599 as is generally supposed, he was certainly not associated with William Rowley and Philip Massinger , although their names appear on the title page of 1656. By 1602 he had become one of Philip Henslowe 's established playwrights. The pages of Henslowe's Diary contain notes of plays in which he had a hand, and in the year 1607-08 he produced no less than six comedies of London life, which he knew as accurately as Thomas Dekker and was content to paint in more realistic colors. In 1613 he devised the pageant for the installation of the Lord Mayor, Sir Thomas Middleton, and in the same year wrote an entertainment for the opening of the New River in honor of another Middleton. From these facts it may be reasonably inferred that he had influential connections. He was frequently employed to celebrate civic occasions, and in 1620 he was made city chronologer, performing the duties of his position with exactness until his death.

Biography of English playwright thomas middleton, plus links to purchase all of his works currently in print.
    http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/clsc86.html
Thomas Middleton Thomas Middleton was christened son of William Middleton and Anne Snow at St. Lawrence in the Old Jewry on April 18, 1580. As a lad in his teens he published The Wisdom of Solomon Paraphrased (1597) and Micro-Cynicon, Six Snarling Satires (1599), but meanwhile, in April, 1598, had matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford. There is no record of his connection with the theater until May 22, 1602, when Henslowe records in his Diary a payment made to him together with Munday, Drayton, and Webster "in earnest of a book called Caesar's Fall ." From this time almost to his death numerous references to his dramatic activity show that he sometimes wrote alone but more often with other well-known dramatists, notably Dekker and Rowley. Two satirical tales, The Black Book and Father Hubbard's Tale , published in 1604, reveal his early interest in the seamy side of London life, which he was to turn to good account in his comedies of manners written between 1604 and 1611. Among these may be mentioned A Trick to Catch the Old One A Mad World, My Masters
