Traveler, Writer, Citizen: The James Michener Museum in Doylestown, PA
This article was written by Jennifer Ciotta James Michener's work Donning Texan-style bolo ties and large-brimmed cowboy hats, James Michener appeared as if he just stepped out of a Western movie. Spending some of his last years in Texas and Alaska, the American frontier meant a great deal to Michener, even spurring the inspiration for his monolithic Alaska . Yet through all his travels and marriages, 3, the writer embraced his roots in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Dedicated to his contributions to the literary and art worlds, the James A. Michener Art Museum is located in historic Doylestown, PA. A small village in the midst of rural farmlands and charming wineries, Doylestown's lovely ambience is set by trendy restaurants, antique shops and small boutiques. The Michener Museum, a town favorite, showcases tiny galleries of various paintings, photographs, etc. Art work focuses on Bucks County itself by including paintings such as The Burning of Center Bridge by Edward W. Redfield (1923).

(eBooks.com) The Source by James Michener About the Book
James Michener published fifty books over a fifty year career as one of America’s best-loved novelists and essayists. His works, both fiction and non-fiction, were known for their prodigious research and educated as they entertained.
From his first work, Tales of the South Pacific, which was adapted to Broadway and film as South Pacific, James Michener became a fixture on the American writing scene. His books often were the number one selling titles for the industry in their initial year of release. A humble man, James Michener was also philanthropic.
In The Source in his signature style of grand storytelling, James Michener sweeps us back through time to the Holy Land, thousands of years ago. By exploring the lives and discoveries of modern archaeologists excavating the site of Tell Makor, James Michener vividly re-creates life in and around an ancient city during critical periods of its existence, and traces the profound history of the Jews, including that of the early Hebrews and their persecution, the impact of Christianity on the Jewish world, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition. He weaves his epic tale of love, strength, and faith until at last he arrives at the founding of Israel and the modern conflict in the Middle East. The Source is not only a compelling history of the Holy Land and its people but a richly written saga that encompasses the development of Western civilization and the great religious and cultural ideas that have shaped our world.

Creative Quotations from . . . James Michener
(1907-1997) born on Feb 03 US novelist. "He is famous for novels about specific locales; wrote "Tales of the South Pacific," 1947; "Hawaii," 1959; "Centennial," 1974; "Alaska," 1988." If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay home. You are like a pebble thrown into water; you become wet on the surface, but are never part of the water."
The really great writers are people like Emily Bronte who sit in a room and write out of their limited experience and unlimited imagination. The permanent temptation of life is to confuse dreams with reality. The permanent defeat of life comes when dreams are surrendered to reality. Character consists of what you do on the third and fourth tries. "It heartens me to think of Verdi who composed thundering operas in his eighties; Michelangelo who did fine work in his ninetieth year, and Titian, who painted better than ever in his one hundredth."

James Michener, dies
Author came to love isles
while writing 'Hawaii'
By Gregg K. Kakesako
Star-Bulletin James Michener worked seven days a week from 7:30 in the morning to noon in a Waikiki apartment for 10 months in 1958 to complete his 12th book: "Hawaii." In the afternoons, after a swim at Waikiki, Michener would work on research for his book at the Bishop Museum, the Mission House's Children's Library, the public library and the University of Hawaii with his assistant, Clarice Taylor, a Star-Bulletin columnist. Michener died yesterday in Austin, Texas. He was 90. It was Taylor who referred Michener to Ethel Damon's "Kaamalu," which told of the adventures of Mary Rice, a missionary and mother, who during her eighth month of pregnancy in May 1844 walked 40 miles across an island just so another missionary could deliver her baby. Michener used that incident to show the racial and religious prejudices that existed in Hawaii, where no ethnic group would ever trust their pregnant wives to the midwives of another ethnic group.

Michener Centennial: Feb 3!
James A. Michener has sold 37 million plus books.
Derek Armstrong Feb 3, 2007
February 3, Random will celebrate one of the great literary lights of the last century with a reissue of his memoir THE WORLD IS MY HOME.
Publicity VP at Random described the excitement this way: "I always think of him (Michener) as America's storyteller. He drew people to read fiction who were not normally buyers of fiction." In my own humble opinion — (therefore read this as an "editorial" feature) — no other American author influenced literature so completely, magnificently, or masterfully. Every novel was a blockbuster, from Centennial to The Source. Hawaii is arguably his best known epic, but he is also famous for:
  • The Covenant The Novel Mexico Iberia Space Tales of the South Pacific Texas: a novel Caribbean: a novel
And many others. Celebrations are extensive, including a March 3-July 8 special exhibit at the James A. Michener Art Museum, February events at the James A. Michener Center for Writers and a special reception today at the University of Northern Colorado.
