    The Queenly Science
    By Matt Rosenberg , About.com
    Filed In:
"The more I work in the social-studies field the more convinced I become that Geography is the foundation of all. When I call it the queenly science, I do not visualize a bright-eyed young woman recently a princess but rather an elderly, somewhat beat-up dowager, knowing in the way of power. With growing emphasis on ecology and related problems of the environment, geography will undoubtedly grow in importance and relevance. I wish that the teaching of it were going to improve commensurately; most of the geography courses I have known were rather poorly taught and repelled the general student like me. If I were a young man with any talent for expressing myself, and if I wanted to make myself indispensable to my society, I would devote eight to ten years to the real mastery of one of the earth's major regions. I would learn languages, the religions, the customs, the value systems, the history, the nationalisms, and above all the geography, and when that was completed I would be in position to write about that region, and I would be invaluable to my nation, for I would be the bridge of understanding to the alien culture. We have seen how crucial such bridges can be.

    30. Mr. Michener's Essay
by james michener, 1962. During the summer vacation a finelooking young man, who was majoring in literature at a top university, asked for an interview,
    http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~xs3d-bull/michener.html
    - Go to the Opening Page of this website - "A dozen times a year, it seems, people write to me asking me to provide forewords for their works, and since at least half of them are people I do not know or whose work I do not admire, I have to decline. However, I now wish to reverse the process. If at any time a statement from me would help you achieve your design of publishing all hundred prints by the year 1998, call upon me and I shall be proud to comply." I never called on Mr. Michener for such a statement. I told him that his writings and his personal example were inspiration enough. I kept him in occasional touch with the progress of my project, and was looking forward to the day when I would be able to let him know that I had succeeded in finishing the series, but such a day was never to arrive, as he passed away while I was in the ninth year of work ... This essay of his is now long out of print, and difficult to obtain. I reproduce it here in the hope that it may inspire others to 'tackle that big job' ... as he wished. David Bull, Tokyo 1998

James Albert Michener - (1907-1997) Doylestown By Mark Bisignaro I. Biography James Albert Michener was born on February 3, 1907 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. He grew up an orphan, who was later adopted by Mabel Michener. Mabel Michener was a poor widow and rumors had it that she was James Michener's biological mother. That report was never proven true. James Michener was raised as a Quaker in Bucks County. Michener lived in a small house on East Court Street. His mother did not have very much money. As a little boy, Michener could never go sledding with his friends, or ride his bike on a hot summer day, nor could he play catch with them, without a baseball glove. These obstacles prevented Michener from having an exciting childhood because his mother could not afford to purchase these gifts for her son. Michener tried to run away from his mother in his teen years but was unsuccessful. During Michener's high school years, he played basketball and baseball for Doylestown High School. He helped lead the team to a championship in his senior year in 1925. Michener graduated from Doylestown High School in 1925 and earned a scholarship to Swarthmore College. After graduating from Swarthmore with a B.A. in English and History, Michener went on to teach English at the Hill School in Pottstown.
