Music and Censorship
Victor Lombardi
December 1991
Second Reader: Alan Stuart
Instructor: Richard Hixon
Introduction
Our society today largely views censorship as a method that has disappeared from liberal cultures since the enlightenment with the exception of restrictions in time of war. The enlightenment served to cripple the intolerance of incisive religious and government leaders, but did not obliterate censorship altogether. Instead, the job of expurgating unacceptable ideas has simply fallen into new hands using new tactics. Censors now assume the guise of capitalist retailers and distributors, special-interest groups, and less influential but still passionate religious and government authorities. Their new techniques are market-censorship (dominating the marketplace), constituitive censorship (the control of language), power-knowledge (restricting knowledge), as well as the traditional regulative censorship (law). These new forces can be as equally effective as the forces of remote history. We notice the effect of post-enlightenment civilization as early as the nineteenth-century in the great Russian humanist Aleksandr Herzin. Herzin left his native country in protest of Czarist censorship only to feel "profound disillusionment with the extremely narrow limits of permission imposed on freedom of expression by market censorship in the West" (Jansen 1991). This author will explore how these forces are affecting the free expression of musicians and lyricists of popular music in the United States, show how censorship has failed to work as planned, and provide a solution to the problem.

Satalite Lost Power - May Hit Earth
Satalite Lost Power - May Hit Earth A large U.S. spy satellite has lost power and propulsion and could hit the Earth in late February or March, government officials said Saturday. The satellite, which no longer can be controlled, could contain hazardous materials, and it is unknown where on the planet it might come down, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the information is classified as secret. He would not comment on whether it is possible for the satellite to be perhaps shot down by a missile. He said it would be inappropriate to discuss any specifics at this time. A senior government official said that lawmakers and other nations are being kept apprised of the situation. The largest uncontrolled re-entry by a NASA spacecraft was Skylab, the 78-ton abandoned space station that fell from orbit in 1979. Its debris dropped harmlessly into the Indian Ocean and across a remote section of western Australia. In 2000, NASA engineers successfully directed a safe de-orbit of the 17-ton Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, using rockets aboard the satellite to bring it down in a remote part of the Pacific Ocean.

Horace Taylor Note: Taylor took over the Nueces Valley around July 18, 1873 from Benjamin Neal who died on that day. UNDESERVED Both the furious cursing of the Postmaster received on Monday because he did not stop while distributing the mail, to give one citizen his letter, and the extravagant praise given on the same day for waiting a few minutes out of business hours to deliver a mail needed by another citizen. Neither was worthy of note except as illustrative of the difference in temperament of two worthy men. It is to be hoped the threats of the one will not succeed, nor the promises of the other be needed. Both men have our best wishes. Source: Nueces Valley , p. 3 col. 3, June 27, 1874 Letter to “Mr. Taylor” published in the Nueces Valley MR. TAYLOR If the Shaw boys will make an affidavit of the exact amount of money (greenbacks) received by them respectively from Hamilton alias Morgan—and then pay over the whole amount of it to the Mayor of Corpus Christi subject to the order of authorities of Jersey city, Then I will sign their petition (now in circulation) to the Governor for pardon, and use my best effort to get others to do the same, otherwise no. So will many citizens. CITIZEN Source: Nueces Valley July 18, 1874, p. 3 col. 2

Art Censorship in America The control of the ideas and information and circulated within a society is referred as censorship. Censorship has been a hallmark of many countries throughout history, especially United States. Censorship is achieved through the examination of art, books, films, music, literature, radio and television programs and news reports for the purpose of suppressing or altering ideas found to be offensive or objectionable. Normally, art is just viewed as sculpture or paintings, but, on a broader scale, art is also music and literature. The combination of all four of these things should not be censored or controlled by government (Mary, 1999). Censorship in art is a burning issue in the United States. How did the arts censorship issues in the United States arise? It is very important to note this censorship battle had nothing to do with esthetics. Rather it was a religious, class, social, ideological and political clash. The basic issue was whether government funds should be allowed for works of art that some people find offensive or objectionable. Quite obviously, if one gives a veto right to every different view in a mixed society like ours, any federal program will end up with the lowest common denominator test for public support. It is very hard to imagine anything that would not offend someone.

Go Back Thank you for your interest in the University of Colorado at Boulder, and to those of you who will be attending CU-Boulder this year, we welcome you to the Boulder campus community. While you are here, you will be learning from the best - our world-class faculty. The 2007-2008 University of Colorado at Boulder Catalog contains a summary of campus facilities, programs, and services; descriptions of colleges, schools, and individual departments; and degree requirements, course descriptions, and faculty listings. Table of Contents Students should refer to the degree, major, and certification requirements listed at the time they formally enter a program. For additional information, students should consult their dean's office. Because the catalog is compiled well in advance of the academic year it covers, changes in programs, policies, and the academic calendar may well occur. The online catalog is based on the print version and is accurate as of December 2006, with the exception of course descriptions which were updated in March 2007. Up-to-date information may be obtained by consulting departmental advisors, checking departmental bulletin boards, visiting the online Schedule Planner and reviewing the registration materials distributed each semester.
