      WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS PAPERS, WSB98:
      GUIDE AND INVENTORY
      SPEC.CMS.90
(Compiled by John M. Bennett, January 2000) This collection of papers, books, serials, and other materials, designated WSB98, was given to OSU in 1998 by the Estate of William S. Burroughs (James W. Grauerholz, Executor). Throughout this Guide, "WSB" refers to William S. Burroughs, and "JWG" refers to James W. Grauerholz. WSB's son, William S. Burroughs, Jr., is referred to as "William S. Burroughs, Jr."
      INTRODUCTION
This collection of materials, originally gathered by James W. Grauerholz, William S. Burroughs' assistant and editor, includes drafts and editorial materials for some of WSB's publications; copies of many of WSB's publications from the 1970's and 1980's; correspondence, fan mail, and printed matter received from the mid-1970's through the mid-1980's; books, chapbooks, and magazines received or acquired during the same period; Burroughs Communications business, travel, and tour files from that period; serial and other publications from that period including work by WSB, and/or reviews of and/or articles about WSB; and much other material. In addition to providing source material for the study of WSB's life and works, this collection provides information about the avant-garde literary, art, and music worlds of the 1970's and 1980's, primarily in North America, but also in Europe and elsewhere. There is abundant correspondence, manuscript, and published material from a wide variety of writers and other artists, both contemporaries of WSB and younger artists and writers. Many of the latter are also represented in OSU's Avant Writing Collection.

release date: March 11, 2008 A book of art and writing by the American poet, Jack Micheline. One Of A Kind combines unpublished work selected from the poet's archives with rare writings from all points in his career. It is the first large selction of Micheline's work to appear since 1999. Jack Micheline was born in the East Bronx, New York on November 6, 1929, as Harold Martin Silver. Because he was so small after birth, his name was changed to Harvey (to fool the angel of death). Harvey Martin Silver was of Russian-Romanian ancestry. After quarreling with his father, he changed his first name to "Jack" in honor of the socialist writer Jack London, and created "Micheline" by exptrapolating from the maiden name of his mother, Helen Mitchell (a.k.a. Yetta Klang). Informally educated, he identified closely with the traditions of American vagabond poets like Vachel Lindsay and Maxwell Bodenheim, and he moved to Greenwich Village in the 1950s to find an outlet for his poetry. In 1957, Troubadour Press, which published a jazz and poetry magazine called

"I'm not pissed off at you. But I always felt poor white trash - even a genius like you got to fight back at the system somehow - booze, beer, fucking screaming self-destruction don't make it at all. All these great poor white writers destroying themselves. Have some self-respect for your rare gift."

    from a letter,
    March 19th, 1985

November, 1974. I am standing next to Ramblin' Jack Elliot and Shel Silverstein up front on the left side of the stage at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. About 10 feet away, Jack Micheline is sharing a fifth of bourbon with Charles Bukowski as Linda King screams down at them from the bleachers. The 2nd Annual Santa Cruz Poetry Festival. Gary Snyder is reciting his tiresome shit from the center of the stage. Bukowski begins to heckle Snyder, "Read five more ...", as Micheline, grabbing the bottle from Bukowski, bursts out laughing.
That was the first time I'd ever been in Jack's prescence, his booming proximity, and being the impressionable young poet at the time, I was very overawed. He and Bukowski were quite a wondrous sight.
Two years later, in 1976, at the 4th Annual Santa Cruz Poetry Festival, I witnessed Jack give one of the best reading/performances I have ever heard. Sure, they were all there too: Bukowski, McClure, Burroughs, Everson-but he just plain stood out with his songs and his road wisdom and his fucking soul. You could tell he was
