born Nov. 15, 1869, London, Eng. died March 24, 1928, London English writer who is notable for her short well-crafted, highly original poetry. In the 1890s Mew set about publishing her stories. She adopted many beliefs of the New Woman, traveling unescorted to France, smoking cigarettes, and dressing unfashionably, but she remained sexually repressed. When her father died in 1898, Mew, her sister, and her mother began a slide into genteel poverty. In 1923 several influential admirers, including Thomas Hardy , secured a government pension for Mew. Her sister Anne was diagnosed with cancer in 1926; Mew nursed her until she died the next year. While hospitalized for minor surgery in 1928, Mew poisoned herself. Mew published short stories and essays in several periodicals before publishing the lyric poetry that secured her reputation. Her first book of poems, (1916, expanded 1921; U.S. title

Her father died in 1898 without making adequate provision for his family; two of her siblings suffered from mental illness , and were committed to institutions , and three others died in early childhood leaving Charlotte, her mother and her sister, Anne. Charlotte and Anne made a pact never to marry for fear of passing on insanity to their children, though Charlotte herself was "chastly lesbian In 1894, Mew succeeded in getting a short story into The Yellow Book , but wrote very little poetry at this time. Her first collection of poetry, The Farmer's Bride , was published in 1916, in chapbook format, by the Poetry Bookshop ; in the USA , it was entitled Saturday Market and published in 1921. It earned her the admiration of Sydney Cockerell Her poems are varied: some of them (such as 'Madeleine in Church') are passionate discussions of faith and the possibility of belief in God ; others are proto- modernist in form and atmosphere (' In Nunhead Cemetery ').Mew gained the patronage of several literary figures, notably

Charlotte Mew, born in London, was one of the last poets of the Victorian era. While she did not write poetry with overt lesbian themes, preferring to keep the speaker ambigious or male, she clearly loved and preferred women. She never married and assumed a persona traditionally seen as masculine, wearing tailored men's clothing, and keeping her hair short. She traveled alone, used strong language, and smoked. While her refusal to bend to society's role for women would seem to bode well, her life was full of misfortune, and she never seemed to connect with a lesbian community of her time, leaving her feeling isolated and disappointed. In family life, tragedy seemed almost to stalk Charlotte. She was one of seven children and the oldest to survive. Three brothers died in childhood, a brother and sister were committed to asylums in their twenties, and by 1898, after her father's death, only her mother and one sister remained. Even given this tragic life, however, Charlotte managed to produce respected poetry. Her literary career came slowlywhile she published a story in

The Cenotaph (September 1919) by Charlotte Mew Not yet will those measureless fields be green again Where only yesterday the wild sweet blood of wonderful youth was shed; There is a grave whose earth must hold too long, too deep a stain, Though for ever over it we may speak as proudly as we may tread. But here, where the watchers by lonely hearths from the thrust of an inward sword have more slowly bled, We shall build the Cenotaph: Victory, winged, with Peace, winged too, at the column’s head.

Charlotte Mary Mew, esteemed by Siegfried Sassoon, and Ezra Pound was born in London on November 15, 1869. She took her own life on March 24, 1928. Haunted by unrequited passion and tormented by fears of madness she, nevertheless, produced poems of unique beauty and passion. Although her life was lived for the most part in poverty and despair she was still recognized by Vita Sackville West as a poetess of distinction. Virginia Woolf called her the greatest living poetess, and Marianne Moore, a quarter of a century after her death, considered her work 'above praise.' Thomas Hardy accorded her extraordinary praise, and others believed she approached poetic genius. Today she has been all but forgotten. Penelope Fitzgerald's laudable biography Charlotte Mew and Her Friends attempted to revive a substantial interest in her. Yet a significant lack of response seems to be the case. Material on Mew is sparse indeed. A search of Internet has resulted in a few connections. So this homepage in part will attempt to explain Charlotte Mew, tell of her tragic life, and present some of her lovely and haunting work. The author of this homepage welcomes any comment or help on bringing Charlotte Mary Mew the recognition she deserves.

Mew, Charlotte (1869-1928) Charlotte Mew's poetry encodes the emotional pain of hiding her lesbian identity in a world of compulsory heterosexuality. Charlotte Mary Mew was born in London on November 15, 1869. Her father, Frederick Mew, was an architect. Her mother, Anna Maria Kendall Mew, was the daughter of the head of her husband's firm. Mew was strictly brought up by her nurse, Elizabeth Goodman, whom she was later to describe in the memoir "An Old Servant." The family was often struck by hardship; three of Mew's siblings died in childhood, and two others went insane in their twenties. Sponsor Message.
Mew wrote stories and verses in her teens. Her first published work was the story "Passed," accepted by Henry Harland for the 1894 number of The Yellow Book . Harland praised but rejected her next offering, "The China Bowl," and for the next decade and a half Mew published only the occasional story or essay, mostly in order to supplement the family's dwindling income. Mew wrote most of her poems between 1909 and 1916. In 1912, she gained notice when Henry Massingham's radical paper
