43. Poetry Pages - W. S. Merwin
An essay on merwin s long career as an author and poet by Peter Davison. From the Atlantic Unbound s website.
http://www.theatlantic.com/unbound/poetry/antholog/merwin/pdmerwin.htm
The Atlantic 's poetry editor reflects on the career of W. S. Merwin, whose long association with the magazine spans great distances of geography and art
by Peter Davison
August 28, 1997

O ver the past twenty-five years the poems of W. S. Merwin have appeared in The Atlantic Monthly 's pages more frequently than those of any other poet. The editors have been deeply attracted to the vivid movement and activity of his poetry, which seem to flow up from an underground river that lies beneath mere speech, as though written in some pre-verbal language of which all later languages have proved to be a mere translation. Here's a sample from a 1970s poem called "The Dreamers": a man with his eyes shut swam upward
through dark water and came to air
it was the horizon
he felt his way along it and it opened
and let the sun out
Merwin's work has followed his life. Born seventy years ago in Union City, New Jersey, he was raised first in a Presbyterian rectory looking across the Hudson toward the towers of New York and then later in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1947 from Princeton University, where he learned from John Berryman, and set out for Europe to encounter the Romance languages. During the early 1950s he lived as a translator of Latin, French, Spanish, and Portuguese on Majorca (where he tutored the children of the poet Robert Graves) and in Spain, Portugal, and England. He eventually settled in the south of France and headquartered there during most of the 1960s, though after a time he spent parts of nearly every year in New York. Later he wandered into Mexico for several years. Since 1975 he has resided in Hawaii, where he maintains a miniature forest of trees and plants of species that are threatened elsewhere in the world.

... Spring 1991 I worked at North Point Press from 1980 through 1988. The press closed in spring 1991 (I'm not certain all the books listed here for the last two seasons came out). The name and portions of the backlist were sold to , which had distributed the press's books in the later years. FSG seems to regard the presswrongly, from my perspective, but perhaps this makes marketing sense for themas a California lifestyle publisher, and they have been putting out a lot of cooking and Western regional books under the imprint, which no longer bears much resemblance to the Albany, California, publishing company that had some influence on publishing in the 1980s (unfortunately, that battle has been lost , at least for the moment). North Point always published on a two-season schedule. At some point I might put up some commentary about North Point's books and program; for now, this is a list (with a few links: I'll add more later) of the original NPP's publications, season by season (paperback editions of books previously issued in hardcover are treated, for the moment, as new publications).

Jane Frazier
Lost Origins: W. S. Merwin's Poems of Division
Jane Frazier (Ph.D., U of Mississippi) teaches English at East Georgia College. She has published essays in South Dakota Review and Style and in an interdisciplinary textbook on Native Americans. Over the last forty years W. S. Merwin has produced dozens of volumes of poetry and translations, as well as collections of prose poems, stories, and memoirs. His essays and reviews have been widely published in journals and magazines from The Nation (where he was once poetry editor) to Sierra , and in his earlier career he scripted radio and television plays for the BBC. There is hardly an award for poetry he has not won. Beginning with the Yale Series of Younger Poets in 1952, he has garnered honors including the Pulitzer Prize, the Bollingen Prize, the Fellowship of the Academy of American Poets, and the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. In style and content he has been diverse, seemingly absorbing and assimilating the various literatures and cultures he has experienced through translating and living abroad. Recurring subjects appear in Merwin's work, however, and the most prevalent of these is the natural world. Egocentrism has helped lead to "forgetting," a key problem with Merwin's humans. An original self once existed, a self that was in harmony with the universe and was a positive, functioning part of it. But with the advance of human knowledge and pride has come a decline in original understanding. And, as we have become more and more separate from the natural world with our buildings and technological advances, recognition of the origin becomes less likely. At times, "forgetting" is a positive word in the Merwin dictionary since it
