From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search William Stanley Merwin (born September 30 in New York City ) is one of the most influential American poets of the latter 20th century. Merwin made a name for himself as an anti-war poet during the 1960's. Later, he would evolve toward mythological themes and develop a unique prosody characterized by indirect narration and the absence of punctuation. In the 80's and 90's, Merwin's interest in Buddhist philosophy and deep ecology also influenced his writing. He continues to write prolifically, though he also dedicates significant time to the restoration of rainforests in Hawaii, the state where he lives. Merwin has received many honors, including a Pulitzer Prize and a Tanning Prize, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Academy of American Poets

  • W. S. Merwin 1927-
(Full name William Stanley Merwin) American poet, essayist, playwright, short story writer, and translator.
    INTRODUCTION
Although he has written essays; plays; translated poetry from French, Spanish, Latin, and Portuguese; and written television scripts, Merwin's most memorable and controversial work has been as a poet. As one of the most prolific poets of his time, Merwin has, over a five-decade career, published over twenty volumes of poetry and is celebrated as testing the bounds and power of language through imagery driven by a quest for knowledge of the human condition.
    Biographical Information
Merwin was born on 30 September 1927 in New York City, the son of a Presbyterian minister. He grew up in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. His early life in rural Pennsylvania as the son of a minister, and the poverty he saw there and subsequently wrote about, led to Merwin’s focus on social, philosophical, and spiritual concerns as well as his use of biblical imagery in his works. After receiving his degree in English at Princeton University, Merwin stayed for postgraduate study in modern languages, during which time he encountered poet John Berryman and critic R. P. Blackmur (to whom his fifth book

A Conversation With W.S. Merwin Often a poet's contribution to his national literature is measured by awards, fellowships, and grants. W.S. Merwin's importance in the world of literature runs deeper and broader than acclaim and recognition. Merwin, as a historic figure, serves as a link from Pound and Auden (Auden selected Merwin's first book, A Mask for Janus, for the 1952 Yale Younger Poet Series) to the contemporary scene. However, it would be a mistake to view Merwin's growth as a mere rejection of contemporary neoclassicism for the pursuit of "daring experiments in metrical irregularity and thematic disorganization" of the sixties. His concern for discipline remains paramount. What makes his poetry attractive is more than an intangible charm. In Merwin, there is something to be learned. Merwin has published nine books of poetry, including The Carrier of Ladders for which he won the Pulitzer Prize. Moreover, he has written plays, essays, and radio scripts. Merwin has made a large part of his living by translating French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin. His Selected Translations 1948-1968 won the P.E.N. Translation Prize for 1968. Merwin's latest work is
