Power: 15 Points: 276 is Major General Merritt A. Edson, USMC Merritt A. Edson's military career began in the fall of 1915 when he enlisted in the 1st Vermont Infantry (a National Guard outfit). In the summer of 1916 he served in the Mexican border campaign. When the United States entered World War I in April 1917, he earned a commission as a Marine officer, but he did not arrive in France until just before the Armistice. He ultimately more than made up for missing out on "the war to end all wars." In 1921 he began his long career in competitive shooting as part of the 10-man team that won the National Rifle Team Trophy for the Marine Corps. He earned his pilot's wings in 1922 and flew for five years before poor depth perception forced him back into the infantry. In 1927, he received command of the Marine detachment on board the Denver (CL 16). He and his men soon became involved in the effort to rid Nicaragua of Augusto Sandino. Edson spent 14 months ashore, most of it deep in the interior of the country. In the process, he won a reputation as an aggressive, savvy small-unit leader. He bested Sandino's forces in more than a dozen skirmishes, earned his first Navy Cross for valor, and came away with the nickname "Red Mike" (in honor of the colorful beard he sported in the field).

CHRIS MERRITT: A blow to the Constitution
November 14, 2006 TODAY'S decision in the Work Choices case is a massive blow to the Constitution and a threat to individual liberty. The High Court majority has rejected the original intentions of the founding fathers and redrawn the balance of power between Canberra and the states.
It gives the green light for any future federal government to take control of most areas of state responsibility.
History will see this as the beginning of the end of the historical compact that has underpinned more than a century of domestic peace and democracy.
The High Court, at the urging of a radical centralist government, has pushed Australia into new and dangerous territory.
That danger arises because the court has established the Commonwealth as the unchallenged master of the Australian polity.
The states may be annoying, petty and inefficient. But as long as they had some ability to resist the power of Canberra, they served a useful purpose.

A Particularly Magical Visit to Bamian Province and Zarsang Village
Posted January 9, 2007 05:35 PM (EST) Read More: Afghanistan Kabul Breaking Living News
I've read about Bamian since we first started training for our deployment to Afghanistan. Bamian Province lies near the center of Afghanistan, and is predominantly inhabited by people from the Hazara tribe. The word "hazara" is an ancient Mongol word that means "one thousand". Genghis Khan divided his forces into "hazaras" or units of 1000 soldiers each and the people who live there still bear that name today. You can see it in their faces as well; the lidded eyes and Mongol features are common everywhere you look. This province was also once the cultural epicenter of a large Buddhist community that predated the spread of Islam through the region. The small city of Bamian is world renown for the two towering statues of Buddha that were carved into the cliff face there ...statues that were later intentionally blown up by the Taliban in vicious and mindless act of religious fervor.

Stephin Merritt: Racist Crackir?
Brent links me to this excellent article in Slate by John Cook about the efforts to brand the Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt a racist:
Stephin Merritt is an unlikely cracker. The creative force behind the Magnetic Fields, Merritt is diminutive, gay, and painfully intellectual. His music is witty and tender. He plays the ukulele. He named his Chihuahua after Irving Berlin. And yet no less an influential music critic than The New Yorker's Sasha Frere-Jones has used that word—"cracker"—to describe him. Frere-Jones has also called him "Stephin 'Southern Strategy' Merritt," presumably in reference to Richard Nixon's race-baiting attempt to crush the Democratic Party. These are heady words, part of a two-year online campaign of sorts by Frere-Jones (also a former Slate music critic) and the Chicago Reader music contributor Jessica Hopper to brand Merritt a racist. The charge: He doesn't like hip-hop, and on those occasions when he's publicly discussed his personal music tastes, he has criticized black artists.
The bizarre case against Merritt came to a head last month at the Experience Music Project's annual Pop Conference. Merritt was the keynote speaker, and in a panel conversation he described "Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah," from Disney's legendarily racist 1946 musical Song of the South, as a "great song." He made clear, according to a partial transcript of the panel provided by his band mate Claudia Gonson, that he did not actually like Song of the South, calling it unwatchable and saying that it has just "one great song. The rest of it is terrible, actually."

Sarah H. Wright, News Office
September 8, 2005 Travis R. Merritt, a professor emeritus of literature whose enthusiastic service over four decades at MIT included taking leadership roles as dean for undergraduate academic affairs and director of the Experimental Study Group, died on Sept. 2, from a heart attack following a lengthy illness. He was 71. "Travis Merritt was a deeply committed professor of literature who ran the Humanities Office for many years where his devotion to Course XXI majors was legion. He was a superb undergraduate mentor," said Philip S. Khoury, Kenan Sahin Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Merritt, a native of Plattsburgh, N.Y., came to MIT in 1964. He was an authority on 19th and 20th century literature, with a special interest in the changing role of prose. His book, "Style and Substance," is a teaching text on English prose. As director of the Humanities Undergraduate Office, Merritt helped establish MIT's current wealth of interdisciplinary programs by supporting new courses that combined humanities with engineering and science. He was fond of saying he believed in "dual literacy"knowledge of both humanities and sciencefor all students.

Drenched in Distortion: Stephin Merritt on Magnetic Fields’ stab at chamber pop
5 votes by Samuel Strang Artists: The Magnetic Fields Propped in the corner, below billowing speakers that spill out dreary lounge music filling out the lapses in lunchtime chatter, sits Stephin Merrit, Magnetic Fields lynchpin, contented with his three-disc This Is Psychedelia But immediately there seems a sense that so many of Merritt’s critics (most notably the Chicago Reader journalist Sasha Frere-Jones’s attempt to label Merritt a racist, link ) are blind to the bitter irony that soaks his conversation, because if there is one thing Merritt can not be accused of it is lacking consideration. Throughout the interview each response is methodically laboured, interspersed with unnerving long pauses of deliberation, refreshingly removed from the reels of spiel delivered by so many artists. Distortion , the band’s eighth record, marks another move away from the New York cohort’s previous synth-pop groundings. Alongside the familiar Magnetic Fields line-up of cellist Sam Davol, guitarist John Woo, accordionist Daniel Handler and pianist Claudia Gonson, Shirley Simms - a central contributor to the seminal
