Tift Merritt: A Heel Of a Singer
By Richard Harrington Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, April 15, 2005; Page WE06 THE TIFT MERRITT fan club mom and dad, her brother and his fiancee, her manager, as well as boyfriend and band drummer Zeke Hutchins all traveled to Los Angeles' Staples Center for February's Grammy Awards. The North Carolina contingent hoped that Merritt's recent "Tambourine" might win the Grammy for best country album, though the odds of that happening were pretty long. After all, the competition included red-hot newcomer Gretchen Wilson, heartthrob Keith Urban, multi-platinum star Tim McGraw and country legend and gender pioneer Loretta Lynn (the eventual winner for the Jack White-produced "Van Lear Rose").
With roots in North Carolina's alt-country music scene, singer-songwriter (and Tar Heel basketball fan) Tift Merritt was nominated for a Grammy this year for her country album "Tambourine." (Roberto D'este)

That award was aired, and CBS ran a snippet from Merritt's "Good Hearted Man" video. At the after party, Merritt met Lynn for the first time, "a pretty neat moment because I'm usually pretty shy about meeting people that I admire. I was thrilled to be introduced to her as a fellow nominee."

Standard introduction for Postscripts to the Belated Reviews
Belated Reviews PS#3: A. Merritt
Abraham Merritt was one of the most successful pulp (and pulp-style) writers of the twenties and thirties. Think of him as the Stephen King of his day, though his audience was more interested in adventure than in horror. As with so many authors of that time, I can't think of any of his books that I would strongly recommend to a mature modern reader who's simply looking for a good read. Reading his books today, you can see their power, you can appreciate why they'd have been popular, but you can also see how they were written to appeal to a particular generation of readers. Still, if you like Haggard-style adventure, and if you can appreciate the genre fiction of a previous generation, you might want to give one or two of Merritt's books a try. The comparison to Haggard was appropriate, as Haggard seems to have been one of his main sources of inspiration. Merritt's heroes, like Haggard's, are forever finding lost civilizations in obscure corners of the world. (They key differences are that Merritt left Africa to Haggard, and used the rest of the world for his sites, that Merritt's heroes tended to be American rather than English, and that Haggard was the better writer.) "The Face in the Abyss" (***) is my favorite among Merritt's lost-civilization yarns. Nicholas Graydon is one of four adventurers who come to the Andes with an old map which they believe will lead to Atahuelpa's lost treasures. Instead, it leads to what is left of Atlantean civilization with dinosaurs and superscience thrown in for good measure. (Not to mention spider-people, lizard-people, snake-people, immortal Atlanteans, and the obligatory love-at-first-sight love-interest.) There is also the Face in the Abyss the imprisoned Satan-figure who brought down the original Atlantis. In the time that has passed, this figure has been gaining in influence, while the powers that defeated him have been waning and Graydon's appearance triggers open warfare.

Merritt Austin Edson
Major General, United States Marine Corps Courtesy of the United States Marine Corps: Major General Merritt Austin Edson, known as "Red Mike" of the U.S. Marines, retired from active duty on 1 August 1947 and died on 14 August 1955, in Washington, D.C. He completed more than 30 years in the military service of his country. Born in Rutland, Vermont, on 25 April 1897, and reared in Chester, Vermont, Edson attended the University of Vermont for two years. Military service interrupted, however, and on 27 June 1916 Edson, as a private, First Vermont National Guard Regiment, was sent to Eagle Pass, Texas, for duty on the Mexican border. He returned to the University in September 1916, but joined the Marine Corps Reserve on 26 June the following year. Thus began a career which was to be characterized by its diversity and distinguished even by the high standards of the Marine Corps. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Regular Marine Corps on 9 October 1917. In September of the next year he sailed for France with the 11th Marines. This regiment saw no combat, but during the last six months of his European tour, Edson commanded Company D, 15th Separate Marine Battalion, which had been organized for the express purpose of assisting in the holding of a plebiscite in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Owing to the failure of the United States to ratify the Treaty of Versailles, this mission, however, was never carried out. Following the end of World War I, Edson began a diversified series of assignments that were to qualify him for the high commands he was to hold in later years. As a first lieutenant, he spent the two years at Marine Barracks, Quantico, Virginia, as the Adjutant-Registrar of the fledgling Marine Corps Institute. His efforts greatly contributed to the organization and establishment of this "University for Marines." This was followed by a short tour in Louisiana guarding the mails.

I CALLED STEPHIN MERRITT A RACIST AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY BLOG POST
Oh, hello, Slate Readers Would you say that four posts in four posts in two years from me, and two from Sasha really qualify as a vicious campaign against "tender" Stephin Merritt? I mean, I know I'm a zealot and all, buuut really now... To reduce the argument specific to the varying things either of us have written about around SM (see also in those posts: rockism, playlist meme, SM's unconcern for the last 50 years of black music ) down to that I think dude's ish on race and music is questionable because he doesn't like Beyonce is to miss the point entirely. Lastly, I resent being called a journalist. I'm not and never have been. PS: Carl Wilson, ever-sage, weighs in nicely. And, also Pogo Princess goes queer theory on Slate TrackBack

(Simon Reynolds elucidates further here: http://blissout.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_blissout_archive.html#114668681783360454 So: how many records by artists of races other than one's own does one have to own/listen to in order to escape charges of racism? Is Stephen Merritt a Racist?
Sasha Frere-Jones ( New Yorker ) and Jessica Hopper ( Chicago Reader ) think so. But John Cook of Slate thinks they are wrong to judge a man by his record collection and dislike for Outkast and Justin Timberlake. Yes, Justin Timberlake. It's an interesting if inconclusive read. It would have been nice to hear what Merritt has to say about it because we're just left wondering which brainy music critic to believe.
