Though he says he tries to be “insulated” from fan feedback, T.R. Knight, who plays George O’Malley on “Grey’s Anatomy,” couldn’t help but notice that there was a huge reaction when George and Meredith Grey had a romantic encounter on in the show’s Feb. 19 episode. “It was a long time coming,” Knight says of the ill-fated encounter. But many fans were wildly against the very idea of the hookup, so there was a furor, especially online , when it first happened. “I was out, and a woman came up to me and Katherine Heigl [who plays Dr. Isobel Stevens],” Knight says, “and she talked to us and then she turned to me and slapped me on the arm and said, ‘Shame on you. You know she doesn’t love you. Why did you do that?’” Knight actually agrees that George, who’s been almost comically unlucky in love on the show, was wrong for going after Meredith, who’s pining for her married ex-beau.

Meredith, George, 1828-1909
Biographical note
English novelist and poet. He was born in Portsmouth, England, a son and grandson of naval outfitters. His mother died when he was five. At the age of 14 he was sent to a Moravian School in Neuwied, Germany where he remained for two years. He read law and was articled as a solicitor, but abandoned that profession for journalism and poetry shortly after marrying Mary Ellen Nicolls, a widowed daughter of Thomas Love Peacock in 1849. He was twenty-one years old; she was thirty. He collected his early writings, first published in periodicals, into Poems, which was published to some acclaim in 1851. His wife left him and their five-year old son in 1858; she died three years later. Her departure was the inspiration for The Ordeal of Richard Feverel, his first "major novel". He married Marie Vulliamy in 1864 and settled in Surrey. He continued writing novels, and later in life he returned to writing poetry, often inspired by nature. Oscar Wilde, in his dialogue The Decay Of Lying, implies that Meredith, along with Balzac, is his favourite novelist, saying "ah, Meredith! Who can define him? His style is chaos illumined by flashes of lightning."

By this he knew she wept with waking eyes:
That, at his hand's light quiver by her head,
The strange low sobs that shook their common bed
Were called into her with a sharp surprise,
And strangely mute, like little gasping snakes,
Dreadfully venomous to him. She lay
Stone-still, and the long darkness flowed away
With muffled pulses. Then, as midnight makes
Her giant heart of Memory and Tears
Drink the pale drug of silence, and so beat
Sleep's heavy measure, they from head to feet
Were moveless, looking through their dead black years,
By vain regret scrawled over the blank wall.
Like sculptured effigies they might be seen
          Upon their marriage-tomb, the sword between;
Each wishing for the sword that severs all.

It ended, and the morrow brought the task.

      Meredith, George
Meredith, George, , English novelist and poet. One of the great English novelists, Meredith wrote complex, often comic yet highly cerebral works that contain striking psychological character studies. As a youth he attended a Moravian school in Germany and eventually became apprenticed to a London lawyer. He began his career as a free-lance journalist, contributing to newspapers and magazines in London. His first volume of poems appeared in 1851 and received the praises of Tennyson. In 1849 he married Mary Ellen Nicoll, the widowed daughter of Thomas Love Peacock; she left him in 1858. Modern Love (1862), a series of 50 connected poems, reflects his own experience in relating the tragic dissolution of a marriage. He married Marie Vulliamy, happily, in 1864 and settled in Surrey, the location that inspired many of his later nature poems. Although Meredith began and ended his literary career as a poet, he is best remembered as a novelist. His first distinguished work

About 1830 To 1901 GEORGE MEREDITH (1828-1910). Except for a lack of the elements which make for popularity, George Meredith would hold an unquestioned place in the highest rank of novelists. In time he is partly contemporary with George Eliot, as he began to publish a little earlier than she. But he long outlived her and continued to write to the end of his life; and his recognition was long delayed; so that he may properly be placed in the group of later Victorian novelists. His long life was devoid of external incident; he was long a newspaper writer and afterward literary reader for a publishing house; he spent his later years quietly in Surrey, enjoying the friendship of Swinburne and other men of letters. George Meredith Bartlett, Phyllis. George Meredith . London: Longmans Green, 1963. In George Meredith’s Modern Love , there exist examples of almost every kind of poetry. Within his sixteen-line "mock sonnets" Meredith develops this unique pattern. "He rises form the purely epigrammatic, a witty thought neatly turned, to the heightened epigrammatic, and then on to passages in which emotion spurs the wit" (92). Bartlett, whose criticism of Meredith is supported with textual and historical evidence, considers Modern Love an able poem, but not a great one. He says, "A great deal of his verse fails, some prose form, because the writer, for all his great gifts, is not feeling as a poet should feel"(95). Bartlett believes that the reason for this is because Meredith’s attitude of mind is not the criterion of his work. Furthermore, his attitude is too frequently coldly didactic, and his works are not sufficiently charged with emotion. Comstock, Cathy.
