Modern Love (complete sequence) From Modern Love Other sonnets
"By this he knew she wept with waking eyes"
By this he knew she wept with waking eyes:
That, at his hand's light quiver by her head,
The strange low sobs that shook their common bed
Were called into her with a sharp surprise,
And strangled mute, like little gaping snakes,
Dreadfully venomous to him. She lay
Stone-still, and the long darkness flowed away
With muffled pulses. Then, as midnight makes
Her giant heart of Memory and Tears
Drink the pale drug of silence, and so beat
Sleep's heavy measure, they from head to feet
WEre moveless, looking through their dead black years
By vain regret scrawled over the blank wall.
Like sculptured effigies they might be seen
Upon their marriage-tomb, the sword between;
Each wishing for the sword that severs all.
"In our old shipwrecked days there was an hour"
In our old shipwrecked days there was an hour
When in the firelight steadily aglow

George Meredith
George Meredith was born in Portsmouth where his father and grandfather were naval outfitters. At the age of 14 he went to the Moravian School at Neuwied, Germany, and was afterwards articled to a London solicitor. He soon gave this up, however, in favour of journalism and writing, working for the Ipswich Journal and as a reader for a publishing company. In 1849 he married Mary Ellen Nicholls, the widowed daughter of Thomas Love Peacock , but she left him for the painter Henry Wallis. He lodged for a time with Swinburne and Rossetti in Chelsea and following the death of his wife, he married Marie Vulliamy in 1864 and they moved to a cottage in Box Hill in Surrey, which was to become his permanent home. In 1866 he acted as a war correspondent in Italy. His first volume of verse, Poems , dedicated to Thomas Love Peacock , was published in 1851 and his second, Modern Love (1862), established him as a successful poet. A third volume of poetry, Poems and Lyrics of the Joy of Earth appeared in 1883, followed by Poems and Ballads of Tragic Life A Reading of Life (1909), and

George Meredith
From LoveToKnow 1911
GEORGE MEREDITH (1828-1909), British novelist and poet, was born at Portsmouth, Hampshire , on the 12th of February 1828; the parish church register records his baptism on the 9th of April. About his early life few details are recorded, but there is a good deal of quasi-autobiography, derived apparently from early associations and possibly antipathies, in some of his own novels, notably Evan Harrington and Harry Richmond as to which the judicious may speculate. He had, as he used to boast, both Welsh (from his father) and Irish blood (from his mother) in his veins . His father, Augustus Armstrong Meredith, was a naval outfitter at Portsmouth (mentioned as such in Marryat's Peter Simple); and his grandfather, Melchisedek Meredith, clearly suggested the "Old Mel" of Evan Harrington. Melchisedek was 35 when in 1796 he was initiated as a freemason at Portsmouth; and he appears to have been known locally as "the count," because of a romantic story as to an adventure he once had at Bath ; he was churchwarden in 1801 and 1804; and some of the church plate still bears his name.

English novelist and poet. Though ostensibly launched on a law career at age 18, he concentrated instead on writing poems and articles and making translations. Because they brought in little money, he turned to writing prose. The novel The Ordeal of Richard Feverel (1859) is typical of his best work, rich in allusion, metaphor, lyrical prose, witty dialogue, and psychological insight. It failed to make him wealthy, and he was forced to begin reading manuscripts for a publisher. Writing in his spare time, he produced a comedy, Evan Harrington (1860), and a volume of poems, Modern Love (1862). He finally won critical and popular acclaim with the novels The Egoist (1879) and Diana of the Crossways (1885). His works are noted for their use of interior monologue and their treatment of women as equals of men. document.writeln(AAMB2);

    Early Life (1828-1845)
    eorge Meredith was born on February 12, 1828. His first home was in Portsmouth, where his father was a tailor. When George was only five years old, his mother died. His childhood after her death was not happy. His father, Augustus Meredith, had inherited a failing business and heavy debts from his own father. In 1837, Augustus was forced to declare himself bankrupt. He went to London to earn a living, and George was sent to stay with relatives in the country and eventually to boarding school. In 1841, partly to protect George's small inheritance, Augustus made him a ward in Chancery. In 1842, when George Meredith was 15, he attended the Moravian school at Neuwied on the Rhine. Although he was there for less than two years, Meredith was to refer to this period as the only real education he had. The school stimulated his intellect and taught him to respect rationality, self-respect, sincerity and courage. The time spent there also left him with a love of German music, poetry and the German countryside. It marked the end of his formal schooling.
    Professional Beginnings and First Marriage (1846-62)
    Although George Meredith was apprenticed to a solicitor, Richard Stephen Charnock, there is no evidence that Meredith studied law or did any work towards entering the legal profession. Instead, with the encouragement of Charnock and his literary friends, Meredith began to write poetry and helped organize a monthly manuscript magazine.

    Selected Writings of William Sharp, Vol. IV , Literary Geography THE COUNTRY OF GEORGE MEREDITH The day was a van-bird of summer; the robin still piped, but the blue,
    A warm and dreamy palace with voices of larks ringing through,
    Looked down as if wistfully eyeing the blossoms that fell from its lap;
