Meng Jiao (Meng Chiao) M¨ng Jiaō His 'Wanderer's Song' uses the 'inch of grass' image later referred to by Li Shangyin , which Roger Waters used in modified form in 'Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun'. In Chinese literature, the 'Wanderer's Song' is a well-known and popular poem that nicely expresses the obligation to return parental love, a conventional virtue in Chinese morality. The poem is relatively simple and easy to understand even for speakers of modern Chinese. Graham's translation runs: WANDERER'S SONG The thread in the hand of a kind mother
Is the coat on the wanderer's back.
Before he left she stitched it close
In secret fear that he would be slow to return.
Who will say that the inch of grass in his heart
Is gratitude enough for all the sunshine of spring? WANDERER'S SONG

Meng Jiao Project
These responses to the work of the Tang poet Meng Jiao have been written with the aid of glosses prepared by Amy Wong and Hilda Tam. While most of these may be considered variations or adaptations, some may be considered loose collaborative translations of Meng Jiao's work. The conception of the project is that translation/adaptation/variation enjoin an open-ended and potentially endless dialogue between cultures, in this case a dialogue-in-progess of which this blog gives only a glimpse.

As usual, the critics are right. But what if they aren’t?
    What if they aren’t?
Legend has it that one Master Wang rode off on a white crane to the land of the immortals, but who is the “White Crane Poet”? No one seems to know. The fact that Cheng Hui (fl. 1210), known for his bold commentary on poets famous and infamous, would not address this poet by name leads me to think that this is not a poem by Cheng. I include it here only because the publisher, thinking that the collection needed more poems to appear substantial, pressured me. [Eds. Mr. Bradley must be confused. No such stipulation was ever made.] Complaint of Meng Chiao’s Neglected Wife

Late in life, Meng Chiao (A.D. 751814) developed an experimental poetry of virtuosic beauty, a poetry that anticipated landmark developments in the modern Western tradition by a millennium. With the T'ang Dynasty crumbling, Meng's later work employed surrealist and symbolist techniques as it turned to a deep introspection. This is truly major work work that may be the most radical in the Chinese tradition. And though written more than a thousand years ago, it is remarkably fresh and contemporary. But, in spite of Meng's significance, this is the first volume of his poetry to appear in English. Until the age of forty, Meng Chiao lived as a poet-recluse associated with Ch'an (Zen) poet-monks in south China. He then embarked on a rather unsuccessful career as a government official. Throughout this time, his poetry was decidedly mediocre, conventional verse inevitably undone by his penchant for the strange and surprising. After his retirement, Meng developed the innovative poetry translated in this book. His late work is singular not only for its bleak introspection and "avant-garde" methods, but also for its dimensions: in a tradition typified by the short lyric poem, this work is made up entirely of large poetic sequences.

Triple Gorge one thread of heaven over
ten thousand cascading thongs of water,
slivers of sun and moon sheering away
above, and wild swells walled-in below,
splintered spirits glisten, a few glints
frozen how many hundred years in dark
gorges midday light never finds, gorges
hungry froth fills with peril. Rotting
coffins locked into tree roots, isolate
bones twist and sway, dangling free, and grieving frost roosts in branches, keeping lament's dark, distant harmony fresh. Exile, tattered heart all scattered away, you'll simmer in seething flame here, your life like fine-spun thread, its road a trace of string traveled away. Offer tears to mourn the water-ghosts, and water-ghosts take them, glimmering. Water swords and spears raging in gorges, boats drift across heaving thunder. Here in the hands of these serpents and snakes

Though Meng Jiao was popular enough in his own time, his reputation went into a tailspin some centuries after his death, because of his brash, disturbing, and jarring verse, which seemed to lack grace and decorum. In fact, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that his verse has inspired not so much neglect as active hatred, even in such distinguished readers as Su Shi, who states baldly in his two poems "On Reading Meng Jiao's Poetry" that "[he] hate[s] Meng Jiao's poems," which sound to him like a "cold cicada wail":

Despise poetry, and you’ll be named to office.
But to love poetry is like clinging to a mountain:
frozen, holding tight, facing death,
days of sorrow followed by sorrow.
The bourgeoisie are jealous of those
who love poetry: they flash teeth like knives.
All the old sages are long since dead, but bureaucrats still gnaw their bones. Now I’m frail, dying like a frond. All my life I sought a noble calm, a calm I could never achieve. And the noisy rabble mocked me.

One of the writers who advocated the emulation of the ancients, Meng was associated with Han Yu. He came from modern Zhejiang, passed the jinshi examination at the third attempt in 1796 and in 1800 took up a minor official post. By 806 he had resigned and spent the rest of his life in Loyang. His poetry is often angry and discordant, not polished and gracious like that of his contemporaries, and his poem sequences in particular can be disturbing. Later critics disliked his work intensely and he is not amongst the most popular of poets in recent centuries. Works available in English:
