Henry Louis Mencken, 12 Sept 1880
Henry Louis Mencken once wrote, " Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats.
An outspoken defender of freedom of conscience and civil rights, his books, while at times satirical and filled with rascist and elitist writings, he is foremost a free thinker in an era where such outspokenness is rarely heard off.
Here are some quotes from H. L. Mencken :
Christian - One who is willing to serve Three Gods, but draws the line at One Wife.
God is the immemorial refuge of the incompetent, the helpless, the miserable. They find not only sanctuary in His arms, but also a kind of superiority, soothing to their macerated egos. He will set them above their betters.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.
I believe in only one thing : liberty; but I do not believe in liberty enough to want to force it upon anyone.

Readers who recall H. L. Mencken as an unrepentant antisemite will likely be surprised to learn that the noted American journalist once visited Jewish settlements in Palestine. Moreover, Mencken admired what he saw there. But that doesn't mean he liked to admit it. Indeed, his articles about his visit aptly illustrate his particular brand of antipathy towards Jews. Throughout his long career, Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956) was among the most popular and influential of writers. His prodigious output included an estimated three million words in newspapers and magazines and some 30 books. Even today, nearly a half-century after his death, many of his books, most notably The American Language, are widely read. Amazon.com lists over 2,100 titles by or about H. L. Mencken. Internet surfers may Google dozens of web pages devoted to Mencken. And every few years sees yet another Mencken biography or critical study.

H.L. Mencken A Carnival of Buncombe Edited by Malcolm Moos
The Johns Hopkins Press, Baltimore
Introduction [by Malcolm Moos]
P OLITICS EVEN BEFORE THE TELEVISION CAMERA EXPOSED THE secret rites of the smoke-filled room, has long been recognized as first-class drama. Politics also involves many elements of a spectator sport, particularly at election time, when people choose sides to follow their teams and their favorite candidates from one dramatic crisis to another. Who, then, can be surprised that political reporting often assumes the forms of the entertainment world? Developing a style that combined in equal proportions the noise of a snorting volcano and the "language of the free lunch counter," Mencken shook politics and politicians for almost half a century. In amusing us with the antics of politicians at play he was very likely without peer. Has the art of politics no apparent utility? Does it appear to be unqualifiedly ratty, raffish, sordid, obscene, and low down, and its salient virtuosi a gang of unmitigated scoundrels? Then let us not forget its high capacity to soothe and tickle the midriff, its incomparable services as a maker of entertainment. Several features contributed to the unique quality of Mencken's political reporting. He loved to exaggerate, and one who took many of his statements to heart did so at extreme peril. But if, as Ortega y Gasset reminds us, "to think is to exaggerate," perhaps Mencken felt fully justified in lacing his political coverage with a tall tale here and there. In any case exaggeration was a trademark of his reporting and gave his columns much of their heady flavor.

A metaphysician is one who, when you remark that twice two makes four, demands to know what you mean by twice, what by two, what by makes, and what by four. For asking such questions metaphysicians are supported in oriental luxury in the universities, and respected as educated and intelligent men.

Hygiene is the corruption of medicine by morality. It is impossible to find a hygienist who does not debase his theory of the healthful with a theory of the virtuous. The true aim of medicine is not to make men virtuous; it is to safeguard and rescue them from the consequences of their vices.
