UXL Newsmakers Henry Louis Mencken Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956) was an American journalist, editor, critic, and philologist. Though he was not a distinguished stylist, the extraordinary vigor of his expression was memorable. The first American to be widely read as a critic was H. L. Mencken. Though, earlier, James Russell Lowell and Edgar Allan Poe had been better endowed than Mencken with critical intelligence, their proficiency in other literary forms had obscured to some degree their skills as critics.

Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.
The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable.
The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamourous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Henry Louis Mencken Quotations
Friday, March 30, 2007
Here are some quotations I love from Henry Louis Mencken, an American editor and critic.
Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong. All human progress, even in morals, has been the work of men who have doubted the current moral values, not of men who have whooped them up and tried to enforce them. The truly civilized man is always skeptical and tolerant.
H L Mencken, Minority Report (1956), quoted from James A Haught, ed., 2000 Years of Disbelief

Henry Louis Mencken Quotes
Imagine the Creator as a low comedian, and at once the world becomes explicable. Creator: a comedian whose audience is afraid to laugh. Demagogue: one who preaches doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots. Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere may be happy. The only really happy folk are married women and single men. A good [politician] is quite as unthinkable as an honest burglar. There is only one honest impulse at the bottom of Puritanism, and that is the impulse to punish the man with a superior capacity for happiness. All zoos actually offer the public, in return for the taxes spent upon them, is a form of idle witless amusment, compared to which a visit to the state penitentiary, or even a state legislature in session, is informing, stimulating and enobling. Conscience is the inner voice that warns us somebody is looking. A cynic is a man who, when he smells flowers, looks around for a coffin. The most common of all follies is to believe passionately in the palpably not true. It is the chief occupation of mankind. Don't overestimate the decency of the human race.

Jahrhunderts . 59. Portrait Of An Ideal World By Henry Louis Mencken
HL mencken. That alcohol in dilute aqueous solution, when taken into the human organism, acts as a depressant, not a stimulant, is now so much a commonplace

Portrait of an Ideal World HL Mencken
hear Bach's B minor mass. The harsh, useful things of the world, from pulling teeth to digging potatoes, are best done by men who are as starkly sober as so many convicts in the death-house, but the lovely and useless things, the charming and exhilarating things, are best done by men with, as the phrase is, a few sheets in the wind. Pithecanthropus erectus was a teetotaler, but the angels, you may be sure, know what is proper at 5 p.m. à la Maryland, and from the nine Beethoven symphonies to the Martini cocktail, have been given to humanity by men who, when the hour came, turned from well water to something with color to it, and more in it than mere oxygen and hydrogen. I am well aware, of course, that getting the whole human race stewed and keeping it stewed, year in and year out, would present formidable technical difficulties. It would be hard to make the daily dose of each individual conform exactly to his private needs, and hard to get it to him at precisely the right time. On the one hand there would be the constant danger that large minorities might occasionally become cold sober, and so start wars, theological disputes, moral reforms, and other such unpleasantnesses. On the other hand, there would be danger that other minorities might proceed to actual intoxication, and so annoy us all with their fatuous bawling or maudlin tears. But such technical obstacles, of course, are by no means insurmountable. Perhaps they might be got around by abandoning the administration of alcohol
