Many changes have happened in my life, and finally I think it’s time to bring this up to date. First off, Tappan and I moved. We’ve left the house we lived in for 14 years, in northeast Tucson, and moved to a little ranch 20 miles south of Tucson, near the village of Corona de Tucson. We have four acres, and a nice little house. The financial implications of selling a big house in a growingly popular area of Tucson , and buying a small place out in the boonies meant that I could build the barn of my dreams. We are all happy about that! Then, this spring, I had the first of two knee replacement surgeries. I am now bionic, and very happy indeed about it. Knee number two will, I hope, be replaced this winter. It was a hard recovery, but well worth it. I love living where we do — just north of the Santa Rita Experimental Range, and just to the west of a huge, connected, parcel of State land. We can see the stars again, and there’s no traffic. Cai and Beth in the new barn The Office is about my work I'm a book editor, doing sf and fantasy for Tor Books. The Backyard is where the horses live. Come visit them

      So here's the story:
Last spring, a pack of three feral dogs started hanging around our property. They were destructive, they hassled the horses, they were a giant pain in the butt. We called county animal control. They said "catch the dogs, and we'll come pick them up." Yeah. But wait...the neighbor managed to catch two of them! And animal control came and took them away.
But the third. She's smart. Really smart. She doesn't carry things off. She doesn't hassle the horses they like her, let her sleep in their stalls. And she has steadfastly avoided being caught. She stays around, she patrols the property, she hunts packrats and other vermin. We were kind of getting used to her, but still a bit concerned.
Then over Christmas, she was injured. Hit by a car? Attacked by another dog? Don't know. One hind leg didn't work. And that meant she wasn't eating. She got thinner and thinner, and more aggressive. I became much more concerned about having her around in that state. So I started feeding her.

I'm thrilled to see someone bought that copy of Roller Skates (thanks, Mom). The cover sums this one up. Sensationalistic YA horror, both creepy and funny. I read this at an early age, so perhaps that explains my strong reaction to the bookbut it's not one to read at home, alone, at night. Well, you can if you wish, but you'll get creeped out. Even the funny parts will have you giggling nervously and wondering why the the hairs on the back of your neck are prickling... Schwarcz, Gladys and Crume, Vic (eds.) The Haunted House and Other Spooky Poems and Tales. A Madeleine L'Engle book should always be regarded as a treasure. I've always liked this one and am headed back to L'Engle not only for emotional comfort but for her comforting portrayal of New York. L'Engle, Madeleine. Camilla Delacorte, 1981. First thus. VG+/VG+. $30 Dinah loves this book! She's not so smart, but she is sweet, and so is Miss, the cat in this book. Miss snuffles ankles so nicely.
