"Texasville"
(Reviewed by Judi Clark FEB 3, 1998) I'd forgotten how funny Texasville was until I picked up a copy for my sister Lori while shopping at a Goodwill. She has quoted so many passages from this book that now I have to re-read it! Texasville takes place in Thalia, Texas in the 1980s post oil boom. Middle-aged Duane Moore finds himself in some fairly sticky situations, such as a 12 million dollar debt. As funny as it is, I suspect this book rings true for this time period. Texasville is the sequel to The Last Picture Show (which I never read) and is most recently followed up with Duane's Depressed (which I've picked up and and have to say it feels like going home after a long absence - they look older but you know who everyone is).

Lonesome Dove (Larry McMurtry)
Sometimes, love sneaks up on you and it's only when it's over that you realize what a deep impression was made.
Lonesome Dove

Lonesome Dove
is, in fact, a book that is full of these kinds of perfectly balanced contradictions. Take, for instance, the sparse quality of the book. McMurtry creates a visceral sense of the emptiness of the world in his prose. In spite of its size (945 pages, in my edition), there is no word wasted in this book. This is a reflection of the fact that even as McMurtry seemlessly moves between members of the Hat Creek crew, the story is, at the core, that of Woodrow Call, and Call is a man of very few words indeed. Like Call, the book is tightly wound, coiled, an explosion of emotion just below the surface, never quite breached. In a human being, that might be considered a tragedy; here, it is illuminating, heartbreaking and impressive. For a reader, it's an unrelenting tension. Once it had me, I was lost in the book, even when I wasn't reading it.

They're involved in the ill-fated Texas-Santa Fe Expedition, led by parrot-owning former seafarer Caleb Cobb (Abraham), to take Santa Fe and make New Mexico part of the Texas Republic. Instead, a Mexican Army detachment led by Capt. Salazar (Olmos), captures the rag-tag group, which is then forced to march across a deadly stretch of desert that few survive.
