McMurtry is best known for his Pulitzer Prize -winning 1985 novel Lonesome Dove , a sweeping historical epic that follows ex-Texas Rangers as they drive their cattle from the Rio Grande to a new home in the frontier of Montana. • The first printing of his novel IN A NARROW GRAVE by Encino Press in 1968 is extremely rare due to the misprint "skycrappers" instead of "skyscrapers" on page 105. McMurtry worked as a both book scout and dealer in San Francisco and Houston, Texas. One of his three Booked Up stores is located in Archer, Texas, only a few blocks away from the movie theater made famous in the Peter Bogdanovich movie based on his book THE LAST PICTURE SHOW. Texas State Travel Guide lists the Archer City bookstore as offering the largest collection of antiquarian books in the country. Larry McMurtry's son, James McMurtry, is a songwriter/guitarist who, apparently, landed a record deal when Larry McMurtry handed off his son's demo to John Mellencamp.

I'm excited about the Comanche Moon mini-series that begins airing Sunday, 1/13 on CBS. All four books in Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove series have been available as unabridged audio productions. Although the only one currently "in print" is the first, Lonesome Dove, they are so popular, I had little trouble last year tracking them all down at public libraries and Ebay. 15 days ago in Clearvoice Audio Books No authority yet

OH WHAT A SLAUGHTER: Massacres in the American West: 1846-1890

THE COLONEL AND LITTLE MISSIE: Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley, and the Beginnings of Superstardom in America
... THE LATE CHILD Larry McMurtry ARTICLE "Go West, young man . . . " may have been the 1850 directive of Horace Greeley, but the most vivid storytelling to come out of the resulting westward stampede has been penned by Larry McMurtry, son and grandson of Texas cattlemen. McMurtry's first novels dealt with life in the West but it wasn't until LONESOME DOVE, for which he won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize, that he met with worldwide recognition for being the master storyteller he is. No other author has so thoroughly and delightfully debunked the ill-advised romanticism of the American West. McMurtry's immense talent punctures the cowboy mythology with such finesse that the reader never feels the prick; we just joyfully go along for the ride of a lifetime. Yet for all the brilliance of his sweeping Western sagas, I will always remember Larry McMurtry as the inventor of the irrepressible Aurora Greenway and the daughter with whom she is constantly at odds in TERMS OF ENDEARMENT.

  • Horseman, Pass By
"[McMurtry] is already well up among the most promising first novelists who have appeared this year. What's more, his promise is the kind that lasts."
  • Leaving Cheyenne
"'Leaving Cheyenne' is brightened and warmed by the author's grasp of his setting and by his ear for the music of talk in Archer County."
  • The Last Picture Show
"McMurtry is not exactly a virtuoso at the typewriter. . . . [S]ome of the writing could be smoother. But he knows his town and its folkways."
  • Moving On
"McMurtry simply doesn't know how to turn off his electric typewriter. Almost as though acknowledging the inability of Patsy, et al., to sustain so long a book, he shores it up with detail."
  • All of My Friends Are Going to Be Strangers
"McMurtry has the faults of a strong but careless writer like Mailer, but they are easily forgiven in this particular novel, which seems so thoroughly a type of 'American' classic without any of the painless charm of housebroken literature."
