He was the son of George Frank and Kate (McLean) Stewart, the former of Troy, Pike County, and the latter of Hope Hull. He is the grandson of George and Martha (Johnson) Stewart of Troy and Dr. Frank and Elizabeth (Gilchrist) McLean, originally of Robison County, of this state. Colonal James Gilchrist, father of Elizabeth McLean, served in the Confederate Army; was sometime a member of the Montgomery County Board of Revenue and one time member of the Board of Trustees of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Frank McLean served in the Confederate Army and practiced medicine for years at Hope Hull. Mr. Stewart attended elementary schools in Montgomery County and graduated at Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery. He graduated at Alabama Polytechnic Institute in the class of 1923 with a degree in Agricultural Science. He was sometime Field Representative of the American Cotton Association and sometime with the Belle Meade Butter Company, with whom he served until 1927, when he went into the dairy farming business in Montgomery County. From 1935 to 1944 he was Executive Secretary of the Alabama State Milk Control Board. From 1944 to 1947, he was market agent of the War Food Administration. From 1947 to 1951, he served as Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture and took office as Commissioner on 16 January, 1951. He married at Dothan, 12 October 1927, Effie, daughter of Ed and Ethel (Crawford) Williams of Dothan. The sea or the icy north was MacLean's favorite setting, from H.M.S. Ulysses (1955) and Ice Station Zebra (1963) to his late collection of short stories, The Lonely Sea (1985). A number of MacLean's books gained a huge success as films, among them Where Eagles Dare , starring Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton, The Guns of Navarone , starring Gregory Peck, David Niven, and Anthony Quinn, Ice Station Zebra , and Breakheart Pass, starring Charles Bronson. The family spoke the Scottish language, Gaelic, and English was MacLean's second language. The family moved north to Daviot, near Inverness, and MacLean spent his early years in the Scottish Highlands. His father died when Alistair was 14, and he returned to Glasgow with his mother. He left school at 17 and at the age of eighteen in 1941, MacLean joined the Royal Navy. He served during World War II as a torpedo man in Home, Mediterranean and Eastern Fleets. Much of the time he served on Russian convoy routes, and from these experiences he drew heavily for his novels about the sea. Later MacLean claimed that he was once captured by the Japanese and tortured, but his story has not been verified. However, in 1946 he returned home.
