Twatt's Tearoom
The Scottish Arts Council is proud to present this short story by Duncan McLean - read more about him and the inspiration behind this story. Twatt’s looked closed as we turned in off the Lochside road, and started down the rough track.
There’s no lights on, said Mr MacAndrew.
No cars outside, said Mrs MacAndrew.
Just wait, I said.  There never are lights.  Never cars either.
So how do the staff get here, out in the middle of forgottenhood? said Mr MacAndrew.
   They walk, said Catherine.
He didn’t seem to believe her, and craned his neck to peer out at the roadside weeds and the long grey grass of the fields.
What’re you looking for, dad? said Catherine.  A tube station?  A helicopter landing pad?  A bus stop?  I laughed.
The track opened out into a wide gravel courtyard with buildings on three sides.  The staff all live on site, I said.
In situ, said Mr MacAndrew.  In tenebris.  In aeternum.  He sniffed.  In extremis.

AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR - VICTORIA

Humanitarian
Ken Morgan
Children's services founder Former car salesman Ken Morgan has gone from giving cars away on Saturday night TV to giving hope to hundreds of children in need. Ken is honorary chairman of Kids Under Cover, a not-for-profit organisation he founded in 1989. The organisation builds houses, bungalows, units, and mobile homes to accommodate children, many of whom are wards of the state, under the supervised care of various welfare agencies. These children are victims, mostly of severe physical or sexual abuse, in urgent need of a roof over their heads as well as support and counselling. Under Ken's leadership, Kids Under Cover has built over 200 bungalows and fourteen houses in all corners of Victoria, giving a home to over 1,000 children in need. Ken's selfless voluntary work for the community and his absolute dedication to helping homeless and at risk young people inspires all who come into contact with him.
Dr Hugh Wirth AM
Animal welfare advocate Hugh Wirth's love of animals led him to a career in veterinary science - to the horror of his teachers, who tried to steer him towards medicine. After qualifying in 1963, Hugh developed a passion for animal welfare and in 1969 became involved with the RSPCA in Victoria . Three years later he was elected state president and in 1981 he became the founding president of the newly formed RSPCA Australia. Over the past forty years, Hugh has had a profound influence on public attitudes towards animals through his role in the RSPCA and as a broadcaster. Hugh has never been afraid to upset people with his strong opinions on animal welfare. In recognition of his outstanding work, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Melbourne University and two years ago was elected honorary president of the World Society for the Protection of Animals, an organisation representing over 460 animal welfare bodies in 114 countries.

Duncan McLean: Scottish Writer
by Alexander Laurence Duncan McLean is an important Scottish writer who lives in Orkney, in the northeast end of Scotland where most of his fiction takes place. He is known in America for his other strange novel Bunker Man . He is also the author of an intense book of short stories, Bucket of Tongues. Irvine Welsh spoke of McLean's early work: "It's very hard to think of a better short story writer in Britain today." Oddly enough McLean won the Somerset Maugham award in 1993 for that book and decided to travel to Texas to search for the history of country musician Bob Wills and any trace of western swing music. McLean's experience are recorded in his fine nonfiction book, Lone Star Swing . "Country music," he explains, "is very popular in Scotland. It almost always defines itself as being apart from the center of power." Even though Blackden is Duncan McLean's first novel, it is only now being published in America. Blackden is the story of Patrick Hunter, an 18-year-old auctioneer's apprentice, who we follow over a three-day lost weekend. He rides his bicycle around the village and his comic experiences become the bulk of the book. McLean explains it as "A patchwork of stories, points of view, jokes, folktales, memories, family history, village history, to downright lies and shaggy dog stories." Even though it seems less plotted than

1802 PASSENGER LIST of the "FRIENDS", "HELEN" and "JANE" The following indexed listing, ordered alphabetically by head of family, is from two sources: the original manuscript "List of Emigrants per Mr. Archibald MacMillan" and the listing in Somerled MacMillan's "Bygone Lochaber".
The two lists have been merged, retaining details from both. The family grouping is preserved by entering each family under the name of the head of the family. As to the relationships within the groups, it appears to adhere to the following format: husband, wife, children thirteen and over, servants or in-laws, children under thirteen.
In two instances, Alexander Stewart of Fort Augustus and Effy Kennedy of Caum, other entire families were listed within their families. These intrusive families have been cross-entered in this present revised listing.

Ex-swimmer dives into swimwear market Date : 18/03/2007 Reporter: Jayne Edwards JAYNE EDWARDS, REPORTING: While the superstars of swimming will be thrashing away in Melbourne over the next week chasing a world title, outside the pool, the competition in the $50 million swimwear game is every bit as intense. One former elite swimmer and sometime Reserve Bank economist has dived into the wake of the big multi-nationals with his own colourful, retro-style togs. DUNCAN MCLEAN, DIRECTOR, WAY FUNKY COMPANY: I was a freestyler, a sprinter. Basically, I didn't train much and complained a lot. I still get in the pool every now and then. I definitely don't swim as much as I used to. Definitely don't get up as early as I used to. JAYNE EDWARDS: Duncan McLean has come a long way in five years from athlete and student to swimwear designer with a business turning over half-a-million dollars. DUNCAN MCLEAN: I was working here at Prahran Pool and really noticed that there wasn't a market for men's swimwear that was a little bit different, a little bit more exciting, so I went home and with Mum, we came up with the first pair of Funky Trunks, then we started selling them to friends. When I moved to Sydney to start working at the Reserve Bank, I had the business basically was started. I can remember at lunch times taking the bathers in my backpack and going around to retailers and trying to get them into different stores and on the weekends, I'd go out to the beachers.
