      Dragonhaven by Robin McKinley
      Reviewed by Hannah Strom-Martin
12 October 2007 In Dragonhaven , Robin McKinley departs from the fairy-tale mode which made her earlier novels, such as Newbery Medal winner The Hero and the Crown (1984), or her acclaimed retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Beauty (1978), so notable and tries something new: entering the heart, mind, and world of a modern fifteen-year-old boy. It's an interesting choice, and much like riding on the back of a giant dragon, it can leave you feeling out of sorts. To McKinley's credit, this tale of a boy and his dragon stays well away from the Old Yeller "foundling" formula. Yes, Jake adopts the surviving dragonlet, deciding to foster it, even though he's just broken the law and the presence of a dead human means that all hell is about to break loose upon the pro-dragon community. But Dragonhaven is not a series of touching adventures followed by a bullet to the head. McKinley appears more interested in exploring parent/child themes than caving in to the expected bonding, adventure, death progression of the "foundling story" and spends more time plumbing Jake's emotional depths than setting up narrow escapes or physical threats for her protagonists. It's a choice which is the book's great virtue, and yet one which ultimately works to its detriment.
Part of the problem is Jake. McKinley makes an admirable attempt to adopt the idiosyncratic syntax of a teenage boy, peppering Jake's speech with "like"s and pop-culture references. When it works, this narrative approach yields some laugh out loud humor, as when Jake stumbles homewards, carrying the distraught dragonlet (he eventually names her Lois) and the soup-pot he has been using to feed her, in his shirt:

Saturday, September 11, 2004 Robin McKinley's Deerskin Deerskin ." It's a re-write of "Donkeyskin" in its Charles Perrault version, in which a widowed king wants to marry his daughter. (McKinley talks about her problems with Perrault's version on her website In case you don't follow those links, Deerskin I should point out that there's at least one way in which this isn't an "except" book for McKinley: the ending jumps up several levels of abstraction, going as mythic or more as Spindle's End , which is to say, very mythic. I think I followed it, but it's too bad that because it went so mythic, it couldn't answer a few practical questions I had about the aftermath. (I think I'm going to put spoilers over on my LiveJournal, for people who've read the book and are wondering what I'm talking about. I'll leave the link in comments.) 2004 Mythopoeic Awards: Acceptance Remarks
Probably no one ever thinks they're going to win a major award, but I nonetheless feel a bit sheepish about joining the queue of Mythopoeic Award winners who knew they wouldn't. When various friends and publishers excitedly sent me the shortlist this year, I said, " Sunshine ? It did? Weird. Well, it won't win. A modern urban vampire novel, in the spirit of the Inklings? Pull the other one."
Although I'm undoubtedly another Tolkien scion. The Lord of the Rings is, unquestionably and incontrovertibly, the single greatest literary influence on me, and one way to view my career is that I keep trying various approaches to rewriting LotR with interesting women characters in it. Ironically perhaps, Sunshine feels like the least Tolkieny thing I've written so far; but there is a breeze from the direction of that less famous Inkling, Charles Williams. He's the only one of the big three who seems to have had any sympathy for cities whose inhabitants don¹t necessarily want as a first priority to escape; and who perhaps therefore also has some sympathy for modern urban human beings. Charles Williams proved that it's possible to write myth into a modern urban landscape.
But vampires? I wasn't thinking about myth when I wrote

Q : You've had a large amount of success with your books, developing a large fan base and even some sites on the internet that are dedicated to you. How does this affect your perception of your writing? Is it a mixed blessing?
MCKINLEY : I do answer almost all the letters my agent and publishers forward to me (except the actively abusive ones which fortunately are very rare), but I avoid being dismayed by the conversations among readers at my web site by never visiting it. I don't know for a fact that it (I hope it's only an it, and not a they) still exists.

Until they found her... From the front flap of the hardcover edition: There are places in the world where darkness rules, where it's unwise to walk. Sunshine knew that. But there hadn't been any trouble out at the lake for years, and she needed a place to be alone for a while. Unfortunately, she wasn't alone. She never heard them coming. Of course you don't, when they're vampires. They took her clothes and sneakers. They dressed her in a long red gown. And they shackled her to the wall of an abandoned mansion - within easy reach of a figure stirring in the moonlight. She knows that he is a vampire. She knows that she's to be his dinner, and that when he is finished with her, she will be dead. Yet, as dawn breaks, she finds that he has not attempted to harm her. And now it is he who needs her to help him survive the day...

Sunshine, by Robin McKinley
January 13, 2008 by jennysbooks And speaking of non-trashy vampire books, I give you Sunshine Twilight As I say, a non-trashy vampire book, though reading the trashy one and watching Dark Shadows Sunshine Forever Amber (and also Purple Hibiscus and Cordelia Underwood , but those took up much less of my time and emotional involvement). What I would say about this book is that it leaves you still wondering about a lot of things.  A lot However, I find upon rereading that these are less frantically crucial issues than I thought they were last time I read the book.  Last time I finished it and I was like, Dragon Haven (but not really, I read it before I started this website)), but not in the case of Sunshine .  It is occasionally too much but mostly quite interesting because hey! vampires! So I vote yes to this book.  Indeed I would say her best since Beauty .  Though Deerskin was also quite good.

Robin McKinley, Sunshine (Berkley Books, 2003; UK publisher, Bantam Press, 2003) Robin McKinley is well known for her wonderful re-tellings of fairy tales such as "Beauty and the Beast" ( Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast and Rose Daughter ), "Donkeyskin" ( Deerskin ) and "Sleeping Beauty" ( Spindle's End ), as well as her Robin Hood novel, The Outlaws of Sherwood , and her Damarian fantasies, The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown (winner of the Newbery Medal). So a novel about vampires, set in a alternative-history modern "North American" city, is a bit of a departure for her. Or is it? not ?), it's not part of her everyday life. But if she lets herself, Sunshine remembers her gran, her father's mother, visiting her as a child and secretly teaching her an odd skill: Sunshine can use sunlight to change things, shape things. So when Sunshine is captured by vampires one night and held prisoner, she's able to use the next day's sunlight to free herself and her fellow prisoner from their shackles and escape. And that might have been the end of the story (at page eighty-two), except that Sunshine's fellow prisoner is another vampire. Now, in Robin McKinley's alternate universe, vampires are
