Born in her mother's hometown of Warren, Ohio , Robin McKinley grew up an only child with a father in the United States Navy . According to her, she moved around frequently as a child and read copiously; she credits this background with the inspiration for her stories. Her passion for reading was one of the most constant things in her childhood, so she began to remember events, places, and time periods by what books she read where. For example, she read Andrew Lang 's Blue Fairy Book for the first time in California;

"I hope some of my doings-over [of fairy tales and other stories] may inspire more girls, both young and grown-up, to do more things they want to do and haven't been quite sure they dared; and more boys not to think it odd that they [girls] should want to do them."
Robin McKinley (Newbery Award Acceptance speech) Robin McKinley's books feature the sorts of heroines she wanted but couldn't find in the fantasy and adventure novels of her youth. Her women have a solid presence despite their folkloric origins and fantastical settings; they leap from the pages of fairytales and land firmly on their own two feet, leaving behind any semblance of passivity. Her young women are warriors, by choice or chance, whose rites of passage lead them into the (literary) hall of heroes. The author's language is elaborately embroidered with sensual images, and the multiple layers of her prose have an almost physical presence and effect. McKinley's images are intoxicating in their passionate specificity, each image linked tendril-like to the others within ornate constructions. Janice M. Del Negro, Editor

Robin McKinley
Robin McKinley is a talented, but not very prolific author. Many of her novels are based on legends or fairy tales, but with the exception of Deerskin, I'm fond of them all. BEAUTY This is McKinley's earliest novel, and is a fairly straight-forward retelling of the fairy tale. The characters lose their extremities Beauty is no longer beautiful, her sisters are no longer wicked. Beauty, who is somewhat plain, prides herself on her learning and is utterly practical. The Beast is equally likable, and the whole thing is purely magical. ROSE DAUGHTER This is another retelling of Beauty and the Beast, written some twenty years after Beauty. The style is very different very much more surreal and beautiful (think Patricia A. McKillip . The characters are a little colder, a little distant, and roses and magic, rather than people, are the emphasis. There is some wonderful back story involved, lots of different roses, unique magic, dreams, statues, etc. Surprisingly different from Beauty, but equally readable. THE OUTLAWS OF SHERWOOD In this retelling of the familiar Robin Hood myth, the realities of living in the forest are explored. It no longer is a glorious, heroic life, but rather a hard one. Characters gain dimension and life, and the antagonists are not wholly wicked. If Robin occasionally comes across as a bit flat, Maid Marian and the other companions make up for it.

Spindle's End - Robin McKinley
Spindle's End was one of the last novels I read in March, and I was much pleased with it. I really like novels that are fairy tale retellings, and this one retold the famous Sleeping Beauty story. Robin McKinley is an author I had been meaning to read for quite some time, so I was happy when I finally tracked down a novel by her.
I love some of the things that Robin McKinley does with this famous story. It is a similar beginning, with the King and Queen having a hard time having a child. It took fifteen years for the young princess to be born. Then, there was the evil fairy, the difference being that she had an argument with another Queen and decided to take it out on this princess. After all the fairies had presented their gifts to the young princess, she swoops in and proclaims the dreaded curse on the baby girl. That is where the similarieties with the original Sleeping Beauty pretty much end. Each town had been allowed to send one representative to the babies christening. One of these was Katriona, whose life changed because of that invitation. The baby was cursed, but a young fairy with very little powers saved her and brought her to live with her family until it was safe for the young princess.

I keep having these conversations with Dad. "Have you started on it yet, Jake?" "No," I say, probably more belligerently than I mean to. But we've had this conversation so often Dad sighs. "Jake, I know I'm nagging you. But it's important." begin "Just do the best you can," Dad says, really gently. "You're the only one who can tell it at all."
Part I, Continued
Jake Mendoza lives at the Makepeace Institute of Integrated Dragon Studies in Smokehill National Park. Smokehill is home to about two hundred of the few remaining Draco australiensis, which is extinct in the wild. Australiensis has always been controversial: its detractors say it is extremely dangerous and unjustifiably expensive to keep and should be pre-emptively destroyed. Its friends say there are no records of it eating humans and it is a unique example of specialist evolution and must be protected. But it is up to eighty feet long and breathes fire. Then he notices that this dragon had just given birth, and one of the babies is still alive. And it is a federal offence to assist in the preservation of the life of a dragon.

Poetry competition, continued You didn’t think I’d forget , did you? With this copy of DRAGONHAVEN burning a hole in the floor by my desk and everything? It’s time to close submissions to the hellcritter poetry competition. I was going to do it several days ago and then there was a little flurry of late additions . . . and since then there’s been a certain events-intervening theme going on with me. But this is your twenty four hour warning. Midnight Sunday and it’s all over. Another warning: any submission you want considered must appear in the ‘poetry competition’ thread . If you posted yours somewhere else, please re post, because I’m just going to print out the comments pages from the original post and look at those. (Remember I look at comments in the single undifferentiated list under ‘manage comments’ and pay no attention to what thread they’ve come in on.)
