Scholar's Blog
This used to be a blog for an English independent scholar of fantasy fiction - but then "Doctor Who" stole my brain, my heart, my soul and my life - so these days it's more a Blog about my on-going utter obsession with "Doctor Who" - with occasional non-DW book reviews and discussions.

Winter Rose - Patricia McKillip
I happened to spot Patricia McKillip's Winter Rose in a freestanding book display at the library the other day, and having only read McKillip's The Riddle Master of Hed trilogy so far, I took the opportunity to grab it.
I can't now recall whether it was mentioned in the Child_Lit discussion of Tam Lin that took place earlier in the year, but there's a definite Tam Lin feeling to it - even down to one of the characters being called Tearle Lynn (shades of Diana Wynne Jones' Fire and Hemlock there, with her hero Tom Lynn !); it's interesting how many writers have been captivated by that ballad and have subsequently re-worked it as a novel.
Winter Rose begins in a fairly unreal manner and more or less stays there ! Faerie and the human world are interwoven throughout the book; Rois, the central protagonist, is a child of the wilds - she loves to roam barefoot through woods, and hates to be confined indoors during the winter months. Her sister Laurel appears to be the polar opposite, and yet both of them fall for the mysterious Corbett Lynn (Tearle's son) when he appears one day, apparently out of thin air, with the intention of reclaiming the derelict Lynn Hall. Neither have much luck in persuading him to explain his family's secrets, but Rois proves to see further than most...

World Fantasy Award This won the World Fantasy Award, but seems slow-moving even though McKillip can always be relied upon for good writing. In the richly-drawn seaside port of Ombria, filled with danger and intrigue in a vaguely Shakespearian time, the ruling prince has just died. The next prince is too young to inherit. His evil regent the Black Pearl throws out the old prince's mistress Lydea who must stumble back across the harrowing city to take up her old life as a serving wench in her cranky father's tavern. Meanwhile, as the Black Pearl tightens her grip on the reins of power and starts running Ombria into the ground, the frightened nobles start trying to pressure Ducon, an illegitimate prince, to lead a rebellion. He however is obsessed with sketching Ombria and its many doorways into a shadow city of fairies that reflects the mundane city. Within the shadow city, a powerful sorceress and her assistant Mag manipulate the action from afar. Eventually Lydea and Ducon and Mag must unite to save the boy prince and to awaken the shadow city which will somehow save the real city in a hard-to-understand way. This sounds great but moved slowly and all three main characters seemed exactly alike.

  • Fool's Run
    • A few readers recommended this author and this particular book to me pretty strongly in the mailbag. While this is certainly a unique book, very different than much of what I've read in the science fiction genre, it didn't really grab me like it did others. The story is set on a future Earth with an orbiting 'Alcatraz' in which is locked up a horrific mass murderer who is certifiable and totally psychotic (to the people that no one can really communicate with her). Through a variety of coincidences, an up-and-coming band comes for a publicity visit, but members of the band have their own agendas. Eventually, of course, all hell breaks loose. The characterization in this novel most closely resembles (to me) that of Brust, and the comparison is not favorable to McKillip. There are a lot of 'cool' characters here, with interesting mannerisms, the ability to complete each others' sentences, incredible (but taken completely for granted) talents, but the treatment of these characters is too thin for me to buy into it. I can handle Brust's conversations between Vlad and Loiosh since I have enjoyed watching that relationship carefully evolve over a long time. Not here. I couldn't find a reason to deeply care what happens. That's not to say it is bad. It is unique and interesting. There are several interesting and unpredictable plot twists, but for each of those twists, there are two unnecessary implicit requests for suspension of disbelief (I can handle 2-3 such instances in an unlikely prison breakout, but there were ten times that many). For example, I don't want to read that there is a hallway lined with virtually invincible, indestructible robots unless I get to see them in action. Instead, I get the pristine hallway in one scene, then utter destruction of the robot guards in the next with nary a scratch on the character responsible. I didn't buy it, and it is hard for me to put a finger on exactly why not, but the bottom line is that this was a good read but not compelling. I can see why some would really like it, but I found it rather average.
