The Lord of the Rings Beowulf to Babbitt as rigorously as my imagination had been shaped and bounded by Catholicism, wanted something more. Something on the other side of boundaries, of tradition. Very simply, I was lonely in this ancient, masculine fellowship. I wanted the company of someone like me. . . . And so I closed the book on the Fellowship and went down a road less traveled. Rereading The Lord of the Rings after a quarter of a century or more was most certainly a labor of love. No matter its flaws, it reminded me time and again, even after all those years, of what marvels and terrors, what mysteries, desolations, and glories beyond hope lured that seventeen-year-old reader onward for page after page in the middle of the night. The simplest language still resonates down the years: "I will take the Ring," he said, "though I do not know the way." The more complex cadences echo as from the oldest myths, the beginnings of human language:
mighty Kings beneath the stone.

Patricia McKillip biography
Patricia Anne McKillip was born on the 29th February, 1948. She lives in Oregon and is married to David Lunde, a poet. An author of both fantasy and science fiction books, she takes the fantasy genre and adds strong female characters to counter-act the male hero orientated genre. Her characterisation and attention to detail has been her trademark for many years. She began writing at the age of 14 and has been writing ever since, apart from a brief moment when she thought she may make it as a concert pianist. Patricia McKillip attended the universities of Notre Dame and San Jose, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1971 and a M. A. in English in 1973. Patricia McKillip has a great love of music and this is often evident in her books. Cooking is also a favourite pasttime.

Fool's Run by Patricia McKillip
Fool's Run is hard Science Fiction from Patricia McKillip , an author known for her elegant Fantasy Fiction. I usually settle into a Patricia McKillip novel like I would a nice comfy couch. She weaves her stories into complex tapestries with colorful words thick as yarn. How disappointing that this technique didn't translate well from high fantasy into deep space.
Divided into three "Parts", Fool's Run tells the story of Terra Viridian , a mass murderer and psychic, seven years after she had been found guilty of slaughtering fifteen hundred civilians while she experienced a vision. This vision soon ensnares the lives of several other people, all brought together by the actions of Terra's twin sister, the Queen of Hearts , as she tries to solve the mystery of why her sister suddenly went crazy seven years ago.

Morgon, prince of the simple farmers of Hed, proved himself a master of such riddles when he staked his life to win a crown from the dead Lord of Aum. But now ancient, evil forces were threatening him. Shape changers began replacing friends until no man could be trusted. So Morgon was forced to flee hostile kingdoms, seeking the High One who ruled from mysterious Erlenstar Mountain. Beside him went Deth, the High One's Harper. Ahead lay strange encounters and terrifying adventures. And with him always was the greatest of unsolved riddles the nature of the three stars on his forehead that seemed to drive him toward his ultimate destiny.

Solstice Wood and Od Magic by Patricia McKillip
Solstice Wood One of the first and best surprises about Solstice Od Magic and had my head spun around by just what kind of fantasy writer she really is. Od Magic Solstice Wood Od Magic Neither of the young men are the sole catalysts in the books, however; they merely serve to be the most visible. In Od Magic in particular, there is much going on behind the scenes that has nothing at all to do with Brenden. McKillip is doing many things in her stories; she is showing us that what we think we know is not often correct, on both a personal level with the Lynn family in Solstice and a governmental one with the king and how he and his court try to manage the existence and education of magic in Od Magic The Twilight Quarter was so named because during the brightest hours of the day it barely stirred; it only came to life as the sun sank. Then doors were unlocked, windows opened; odd shops without names lit their lamps; people spilled into the streets. Smells of meat and onions sizzled on flames, freshly baked bread, kettles of hot soup mingled with the market scents of fruits and animals and exotic spices. Stalls as solitary as closed tents during the day rolled up a wall to show bolts of cloth, toys, tools, jewels. Jugglers tossed flames; fortune-tellers spread their bright scarves, their cards and crystals. Idlers threw dice and pitched knives; great puppets strode the streets on stilts, enacted stories for a coin. Oil lamps and torches cast an illusion of day. Light plunged too easily and without warning into shadow, where things disturbing in their vagueness might or might not happen.

McKillip, Patricia. The Riddle-Master of Hed
In high school I read Ursula LeGuin's essay, "From Elfland to Poughkeepsie," which made the case that a fantasy book and a mainstream book should have differences beyond one having dragons and one having senators. A really good fantasy book ought to be distinguished by a certain tone, a certain voice and style. The first time I read it, I couldn't quite agree; dragons were inherently more interesting than senators, and I was fairly tone-deaf. But LeGuin does have a good point, and that's why Patricia McKillip has become my favorite fantasy writer. When you read so much as a page, you can't think for a moment that you're in Poughkeepsie.
Morgon is king of the small farm island of Hed, riddle-master at the academy, and something more than that; he is marked by three stars on his forehead. He finds a harp with three stars. He doesn't want to acknowledge it, but a certain destiny is pulling him forward on a quest, accompanied by the harpist called Deth. Shape-changers are out after his life; he wants to return home to Hed, and cannot. He does not want a place in a destiny a thousand years old, but it comes for him anyway.
The Riddle-Master trilogy is one of McKillip's first, and is much more epic and less domestic and personal than some of her more recent books. I prefer the intimacy of

Atheneum 1979 Patricia McKillip's "Riddle-Master Trilogy" is probably one of the world's most read fantasy series. Originally written for children, its fan base now consists of people of all ages. After reading it I'm not at all surprised, because it's definitely not your average children's fantasy series. If you like it, you'll like it regardless of age - and if you don't, you'll have quite a confusing time reading it. I know. I had. It was the day the traders came to Hed, a busy and exciting day for everyone on the small island, but most of all for Morgon, Prince of Hed. Still a young man, he's not only already the ruler of his island, but also an educated man: a riddle-master. On this day he first have to admit that he has a crown under his bed, a crown he won in the most famous riddle-game in the world - against the ghost of Peven. You win, you get the crown. You lose, you die. And when Morgon has confessed that he's won that game, he's told that the King of An has promised his daughter to the man who beats Peven's ghost: Raederle, the woman he already loves. In a fairy tale that would be quite enough. The young hero does the unexpected, heroic thing and gets the prize, the princess. This time it all gets a little messed up, though. Before Morgon reaches his Raederle, his destiny catches up with him: he buys a harp with three stars, corresponding to the three stars on his forehead, and together with the High One's harpist he's almost killed. A game of running and hiding from mysterious, mighty and decidedly non-Human enemies while trying to reach the High One's hold in the Erlenstar Mountain begin. Because only the High One has the answer to the riddle Morgon must solve: Who is he? What does the stars on his forehead mean? And how can he save the world from the enemies he doesn't even know?

I've enjoyed a lot of McKillip's stuff. She writes a beautiful fairy tale (or fantasy novel, if you prefer to call them that). And her style is eloquent and beautiful without overwhelming the story...I've really enjoyed lots of her books!
But this one? A cross-over into science fiction? Hmm....
But, as usual, she drew me in and took me places I wasn't expecting, and drew both truth and depth out of the story. By the end of the book, I had to admit I thoroughly enjoyed it. Hooray for McKillip! Posted by wynne at 10:13 PM

Patricia A. McKillip: Ombria in Shadow
By Mikko on January 14, 2008 8:50 PM in Fiction Permalink Comments (0) Ombria in Shadow, the first of McKillip's books translated in Finnish, tells of Ombria, a city that's facing problems when its prince dies. The new prince is just five years old and the city is ruled by mysterious and frightening Domina Pearl. Pearl doesn't seem to have the city's best interests in her mind, she has her own motives. Lydea, the prince's mistress is driven out of the palace to die in the streets. She doesn't, thanks to the interventions of Mag, a "waxling" servant of Faye, a strange witch inhabiting the shadowy underworld of Ombria. There's also the prince's bastard Ducon, who seems destined to power, but reluctant to accept his fate. It's a wonderful story, quite unlike any other. I can easily recommend this to anybody who hates the standard fantasy dreck: Ombria in Shadow is something else. It's a hazy story, full of dreamy elements and interesting twists. It's certainly one of the better fantasy novels I've read in a while. (Review based on the Finnish translation.) [ Ombria in Shadow at Amazon.co.uk
