From SCIFIPEDIA (Redirected from Patricia A. McKillip Patricia Anne McKillip (b. February 29 Salem Oregon ) is one of the most respected and celebrated fantasy writers working today and is the author of numerous novels and short stories. Her writing is distinguished by a distinct, rich and highly evocative style. Her worlds are exquisitely realized with roots in fairy tale , myth, daily life, and the natural world, peopled by characters with real longings, failings, and preoccupations amidst the wonders and terrors of their lives. Born February 28th in Salem Oregon , McKillip says she started writing at the age of 14, producing her first 30 page fairy tale one day while she was bored. She comes from a large family, and that fact is often reflected in the important role of family in her novels. She is the winner of two World Fantasy Awards , the Locus Award , a Balrog , and two Mythopoeic Awards In Faces of Fantasy , by Patti Perret, McKillip is quoted as saying: “Those who fear the imagination condemn it: something childish, they say, something monsterish, misbegotten. Not all of us dream awake. But those of us who do have no choice.”

McKillip Ace Books (310 pages, November 2006, $14.00) Patricia A. McKillip has long been known as one of fantasy’s most graceful and lyrical writers, with a gift for making the ordinary seem strange by turns until at the last, the strange seems ordinary and the reader sees the world through the eyes of magic. In this collection of short fiction gathered from 25 years of writing, Ms. McKillip presents thirteen lustrous, many-faceted tales exploring the themes of magic, courage, strength, and beauty. In “The Harrowing of the Dragon of Hoarsbreath” a young woman and a not-so-young man wake a dragon of ice and cold and challenge it to free their home of an ageless winter, teaching each other surprising and painful wisdom in the process. “A Matter of Music” presents the tale of a young bard who leaves her home and position to challenge the strange and deathless music of a wild people to find the true meaning of courage and of peace. In “A Troll and Two Roses,” a wizard’s curse entangles a troll, a prince, and a princess in the most unlikely of love triangles. “Baba Yaga and the Sorcerer’s Son” paints the ancient bogey-woman in a new light, as the son of a sorcerer blows himself somewhat confusedly into her realm beneath the earth. “The Fellowship of the Dragon” pursues the queen’s harpist into a strange hinterland where one-by-one they meet with magic and riddles and are transformed.

A review by Alma A. Hromic
Advertisement There is a sense of antiquity about this book and by that I don't mean dusty obsolescence and a sliding into oblivion. On the contrary, this is one of those shining complex things that our ancestors seemed to find it easy to do and that we have somehow forgotten in the rush and spin of our modern days this has the feel to it of a tale that has come down from some ancient dawn, a day long gone, but it is bright with the ancient magic and it feels ageless, eternal, light and perfect like a star. In its day, this was the book that won Patricia McKillip the World Fantasy Award for best novel I have no doubt that back in 1974, when it was first published

Patricia A. McKillip, The Sorceress and the Cygnet (Ace Books, 1991)
Patricia A. McKillip, The Cygnet and the Firebird (Ace Books, 1993) Reprinted in an omnibus as Cygnet (Ace, 2007) The Cygnet series is a pair of books worthy of McKillip's reputation for the numinous and lovely. Both are full of magic, though they are as different as two sides of the same golden coin. In The Sorceress and the Cygnet , Patricia A. McKillip introduces the reader to the Ro family and captures the confusion, anger, despair, fear and otherworldliness that results when ancient common stories come to life and reveal the secret realities behind our songs and folk tales. The Cygnet and the Firebird continues the adventures of the Ro family as they encounter a whole new world and a new set of emotional and magical dilemmas. While both of these novels can be read independently of each other given their stand alone plot lines, they each take place in Ro Holding and involve the developing relationships and personalities of the Ro family, and when read together form a richer tale that plumbs the depth of loyalty, sense of place, love, and magic. The Sorceress and the Cygnet The Cygnet and the Firebird continues the adventures of the Ro family of Ro Holding, where the threads of magic and time deepen to once again entangle Nyx and Meguet in a fight to protect their house and heritage against attack. This time, it is not the ancient powers of their own world they have to deal with, but the complex trials and woes of nearby worlds, accessed only through deep magic and webs of time. When a strange Firebird flies into Ro house, chaos erupts. Every desperate, haunted cry of the bird changes the mundane into the jewel encrusted and extraordinary. At night, for a few brief hours, the Firebird becomes a desperate haunted man named Brand. Only Nyx is capable of helping Brand, and that journey will take her through to another world, where dragons and deserts abound. Soon, as Nyx and Meguet struggle to unravel the puzzle of Brand and his family, Nyx learns lessons about love herself that she seemed to unable to learn previously.

Excerpts from Patricia McKillip's 1998 Lecture On Theme, Outlining, Research, and Revision Patricia A. McKillip On Critiques: Student:
Between the time you finish a book before you send it off to the editor, do you have anybody read it? PM: I used to. But now my agent reads it and he's worked as an editor himself, and he's got really, really, good suggestions so I tend to trust what he says about something. Usually not. I don't have friends who I bring chapters to and have them sit around and analyze it. Partly because I never know quite what I'm doing while I'm writing anyway and partly because sometimes the act of somebody else looking at what you've written just makes it vanish somehow. You don't want to go to that place anymore, you want to go someplace else that's secret. That's probably something left over from my childhood. You know, I lose concentration on it when someone else looks at it. Student: If [people in a critique group] say something drastic needs to be done, how seriously do you take it?

It is a time when all knowledge is couched in riddles and the learned man is a master of riddlery. Morgon, the Prince of Hed, born with three stars on his forehead and educated at the College of Riddlery, is such a man. Having bested the ghost of Peven of Aum in a riddle match, he travels to An to claim his prize, the hand in marriage of Raederle, the second most beautiful woman of An. Traveling with him is the High One's harpist, Deth. But Morgon's journey to An is interrupted by a shipwreck, leaving him on a strange shore, voiceless and nameless. Thus begins his quest across the realms that will ultimately take him to the court of the High One at Erlenstar Mountain, for someone or something fears the meaning of the three stars on his face. Along the way, he is pursued by mysterious shapechangers who try to kill him again and again. He acquires a harp and a sword, both decorated by three stars. He learns to change his own shape, but he cannot unravel the riddle of the three stars on his forehead or the harp and sword that were obviously made for him centuries before he was born. In the second book in the trilogy

Patricia McKillip's Riddle Master series ...
... is two very good books, and one novel that's a real mess. "The Riddlemaster of Hed," "Heir of Sea and Fire," and "Harpist in the Wind."
Forty pages into Riddlemaster I was thrilled to be in the presence of the anti-Rowling. By then this had happened:
We'd been introduced to Morgon, Prince of the island of Hed, a peaceful farming kingdom. Morgon's parents have died mysteriously. We learn he has the "land rule," a mystic sense of what's going on in his kingdom, and that his brother Eliard is his heir. He has a sister, Tristan, who's 11 and isn't coping too well with her parents' deaths. Morgon studied riddle mastery at the College of Riddles in Caithnard, and sometime after his parents' deaths, he played a riddle game with a thousand year old ghost ... and won, and lived, and escaped with a famous crown. Which is now hidden under his bed and his sister Tristan has found it.
So Morgon fights with Eliard over having risked his life to get the crown, and then the High One's Harpist, Deth, shows up on Hed, and Morgon and Deth take a ship to the mainland, to the College of the Riddle Masters. There we meet Morgon's friend Rood, who's the brother of Raederle; Raederle was promised in marriage, by her shapechanging father, to the man who defeated the thousand year old ghost ... which is convenient, since Morgon and Raederle love one another anyway.
Morgon and Deth inform everyone at the college that Morgon won the crown from the ghost, and they head off on a ship together to go see Raederle ... but along the way the ship's crew vanishes, the ship cracks apart, Morgon is nearly drowned and awakens with his memory gone.
