McHugh The quote from Camus that starts this book is illustrative about its goals: A simple way to get to know about a town is to see how the people work, how they love and how they die. The `town' in this case is a future world which is admirably rendered, gradually taking on depth as the novel proceeds. There have been quite a few sf novels that have the People's Republic of China as the dominant world power. But this speculation hasn't been as written into an sf novel as carefully as is done here. Here McHugh attempts to write about the contemporary relationship between America and China within the context of a science fiction novel about China as the only global superpower. The future as depicted here is seen through the lives of several characters. One of the main characters is Zhang Zhong Shan or China Mountain Zhang. He's an engineer in training who at the start of the novel cannot afford to go to China to study engineering. He also happens to be gay, in a society where everything is expected to be straight and according to the rules set down by the Party.

August, 1997 Maureen F. McHugh Author BIO I was born in 1959 in a small town in southwestern Ohio. I went to college at Ohio University and then got my master's degree in English Literature at New York University. I taught as a part time college instructor for a few years and did temporary office work and basically bummed around New York City a lot, and then I moved to Shijiazhuang, China for a year. I came back to Ohio, became a technical writer for a medical company, met my husband and got married, and when we were both laid off, he got a job in Cleveland. So now I'm a full time writer. Latest China Mountain Zhang by Maureen F McHugh A book review by Steven Wu http://www.scwu.com/bookreviews/ May 15, 2004 Rating: 8 (of 10) I don't know quite what I was expecting out of China Mountain Zhang , Mauren F. McHugh's multi-award-winning science-fiction novel. I guess I was expecting a lot more action. Not that every novel with Chinese people in it has to be action-packed, but I certainly expectedI don't knowa few more guns, some big explosions, maybe a starship invasion or two. Instead, I got a very, very quiet novel, one that is essentially about eking out a living in a mildly unusual world. I use the phrase "mildly unusual" only because, in the context of the science-fiction genre, the universe of China Mountain Zhang isn't particularly exotic. It's the 22nd Century, and Communist China has long since taken over the world. (The book is very good about doling out little bits of this history; McHugh slyly paints all the stories people tell with the gloss of historical memory, giving their fond [or not-so-fond] recollections of history a genuine feel.) Mankind has colonized a few planetsin particular, Mars. Computers are pretty advanced; transportation is much improved; people are into a sport called kite-flying. The most significant aspect of McHugh's universe is that it is very Chinese-centric. Americans are looked down upon as hicks; if you're American, and you can make it into one of the uber-prestigious Chinese universities, then you "must be one smart son of a bitch," as one character says.

McHugh, Eos, 2001, 257 pp. Nekropolis is a stunning work, a massively ambitious novel that fulfills all of its promise. Paradoxically, in this book McHugh’s writing is pared down, cut down to essentials of purest prose and character. It’s also a relatively short work. By some alchemy that very few can reproduce, McHugh takes simple elements and constructs something rich and strange out of them. The book exists in the reader’s mind after reading the last page, kind of like an artifact of exquisite beauty, carved and perfect and glowing. As I said, each sentence itself seems as plain as could be, but taken together the writing is astounding, smooth and flowing and seductive. I’ll quote the first paragraph of the book to give a feel for how swiftly and silkily McHugh brings us into the story: How I came to be jessed. Well, like most people who are jessed, I was sold. I was twenty-one, and I was sold three times in one day, one right after another; first to a dealer who looked at my teeth and in my ears and had me scanned for augmentation; then to a second dealer where I sat in the back office drinking tea and talking with a gap-toothed boy who was supposed to be sold to a restaurant owner as a clerk; and finally that afternoon to the restaurant. The restaurant owner couldn’t really have wanted the boy anyway, since the position was for his wife’s side of the house. (1) The “I” of this first passage is Hariba.
