From Essays on China My last update linked to my blog where I talked about having Hodgkins. That's so much old news. I'm healthy and fine now.My blog about the whole thing is called No Feeling of Falling Where I get my Ideas with thanks to SFF Net and Minicon I mean, I don't much like romance novels anymore, and haven't since I was in my late teens, but I really liked the idea of having a handle on difference. But I had one idea. Remember, this is about where my ideas come from? And that idea was that romances are porn for women. If you notice how long it took me to get this one rather meager idea, you get a clue as to why the question, "Where do you get your ideas," get hard to answer. Particularly when asked by a serious middle school student. A frivolous essay on the Anti-SF Novel and writing, delivered to the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society Sept. 12, 1997.

Maureen F. McHugh Maureen F. McHugh is an acclaimed science fiction writer and all-round nice person who used to live in Cleveland, OH and currently lives in Austin, TX. Her work displays a gift for language and characterization that is unusual among science fiction authors. McHugh was born in a small town in southwestern Ohio in 1959. As a young woman, she earned her undergraduate degree at Ohio University and then went to grad school at NYU where she obtained an MA in English literature. After college, she spent a year teaching in Shijiazhuang, China and also lived in New York City. During her time in the Big Apple, she hung out with a good many gay writers and says that she became interested in their lives. The combination of her explorations in China and her investigations into the gay demimonde led to her writing her breakthrough 1992 novel, China Mountain Zhang . This first novel was widely hailed by critics and readers alike and is unusual amongst SF novels in that it features a gay Chinese protagonist. It was nominated for the Hugo and Nebula awards, and it ultimately won the Lambda and Tiptree awards.

Maureen F. McHugh set almost impossible levels for herself in producing the superlative China Mountain Zhang as her first novel. Receiving almost universal plaudits, China Mountain Zhang explored the role of the non-conformist in an alternative society where such behaviour was extremely hazardous. Her second novel, Half the Day is Night, immerses the characters in a society that is almost totally alien, albeit on Earth. In fact the novel is set in an underwater nation in the Caribbean, Caribe. A 'benign' dictatorship, Caribe is run in the fashion of most dictatorships - superb facilities for those who can afford it but maintaininga desperate underclass .
David Dai arrives to take up his post as bodyguard to Mayla Ling, banker and heir to her grandfather's bank. Dai and Mayla get on well initially, but troubled by memories of his former employment as a mercenary in an African war Dai finds his position becoming no walkover as some of Mayla's colleagues and clients fall victim to a revolutionary terrorist group, La Mano di Dios. This is not the job he was contracted for and he finds himself increasingly unable to cope until finally he flees following a direct violent action against Mayla. This places him first in line as a suspect terrorist in the eyes of the local police force and he must find a way to escape from Caribe before he is framed for actions he did not commit.

      Interview: Maureen F. McHugh
      By Pat Stansberry
9 September 2002 M aureen F. McHugh often delves into the world of the outsider, from society, from politics, even gender. She has published four novels and numerous short stories. Her first novel, China Mountain Zhang won the James Tiptree Award, the Locus Best First Novel Award, and a Lambda Award, and was nominated for a Hugo and a Nebula. "The Lincoln Train" won a Hugo for best short story in 1996. Her latest novel, Nekropolis will be published in trade paperback in Nov. 2002. The New York Times Book Review observes that "McHugh writes science fiction from the inside out, with the focus on character." Karen Joy Fowler writes, "I know of no writer who is more deft, more dazzling, or more dangerous to read. You pick up one of Maureen McHugh's books and whole days pass before you remember to put it down again." She has been compared to Ursula K. Le Guin. This discussion took place at Café Tandoor in Cleveland, in the torpid afterglow of Jhinga Biryani, lightly spiced rice and shrimp, Baigan Bharta, rich and pungent roasted eggplant, Palak Raita, a spinach and yogurt condiment that cools the palate, and the wondrous Indian bread naan. "Food is the center of my existence," says McHugh. Pat Stansberry: When writers talk about writing, it's fun to start with our embarrassing youths. Do you remember your earliest speculative fiction story?

My Sister, Instigator (Another Dog Post)
Years ago, when my nephew's boy (he starts college in the fall) was a toddler, my sister and I bought a Fisher Price lawn mower that made the horrendous popping noise. It was so annoying that his parent would let him play with it for awhile, and then would put it up because it was driving them crazy.
Yesterday UPS arrived with a package for Hudson Yeager. Inside were vitamins, Omega 3 oil for his coat, toys and A Ball. The Ball was an instant hit. It's softball-sized, too tough to chew through (he destroys tennis balls) and it's just too big and heavy for Shelly the World's Most Annoying Dachshund to want it.
Hudson loves his ball. Hudson tosses the ball to us. All the time. When Bob is on the computer. When we're watching TV. When I'm in the kitchen. I went to the bathroom and while I was there, the ball kept thumping against the door.
Auntie Pat has a lot to answer for.

Book Description
Winner of the James Tiptree, Jr. Memorial Award, the Lambda Literary Award, the Locus Award for Best First Novel, and a Hugo and Nebula Award nominee.
With this groundbreaking novel, Maureen F. McHugh established herself as one of the decade's best science fiction writers. In its pages, we enter a postrevolution America, moving from the hyperurbanized eastern seaboard to the Arctic bleakness of Baffin Island; from the new Imperial City to an agricultural commune on Mars. The overlapping lives of cyberkite fliers, lonely colonists, illicit neural-pressball players, and organic engineers blend into a powerful, taut story of a young man's journey of discovery. This is a macroscopic world of microscopic intensity, one of the most brilliant visions of modern SF.
Book Review
"A first novel this good gives every reader a chance to share in the pleasure of discovery; to my mind, Ms. McHugh's achievement recalls the best work of Delany and Robinson without being in the least derivative."
