More Information William McGonagall was born in 1825 in a very poor area of Edinburgh. He became known, and indeed celebrated, as the author of the world's worst verse! Not all is as it sounds though, the Bard of Dundee was a clever man and wordsmith. True first editions are regarded as rare books and are of collectable value. They are not so expensive as to put them out of reach so a reasonable budget should allow the collector to put together a decent collection of this authors works. For those on a more modest budget or those looking for reading copies, there are a multitude of reprints, later editions and compilations, all available for nominal sums.

The best bad poet of all time
I'd never heard of this gentleman before, but I am sure my life will be richer now for having read about him this morning. Apparently, William McGonagall (1825-1902), "poet and tragedian of Dundee," wrote poetry as horrible and as fascinating as a massive train wreck (in which nobody gets hurt, of course).
    From Today in Literature:
McGonagall's contemporaries report that they could find no irony in him, or any awareness of what was going on. Today, he is recognized as favorite son and official "Best Bad Poet" of Dundee. So bad that when Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers held a Worse-Than-McGonagall contest they were unable to find a winner, and so good that they made the movie The Great McGonagall (1974), with Milligan in the kilt.

This is the only known sculptural representation of McGonagall and due to the extremely small edition size, is sure to become a serious collectors piece as it To arrange purchase of this or any other of my works by cheque or money order please email me He may have been born in Edinburgh but Dundee is the city where William Topaz McGonagall's work flourished. A handloom weaver by trade he is world renowned for his disjointed poetry that simply doesn't scan. Whether he was an ingenious buffoon or a shrewd entertainer (McGonagall extracted fees of between 5 and 10/- (50p) from the crowds who gleefully attended his public humiliations) is open to debate. Whatever the case, one cannot fail to admire McGonagall's eternal optimism-this is the man who walked from Dundee to Balmoral to present a volume of his treasured verse to his beloved Queen Victoria only to be told at the gates of the castle to go away. His verse was especially ridiculed for its awkward rhymes. Although he was continually mocked during his lifetime for his verse, McGonagall never lost faith in himself as a writer. McGonagall's poems dealt with subjects of national interest, especially shipwrecks and battles. His best-known poem, "The Tay Bridge Disaster," commemorated the destruction in 1879 of the railroad bridge over the Tay River.

Tay Bridge poems of William McGonagall, 1830-1902
Here are three poems about the two Tay rail bridges and the disaster which befell the first, in the imitable prosody of William McGonagall, Dundee's most famous self-taught poet.
    The Railway
    Bridge
    of the
    Silvery Tay
Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silvery Tay!
With your numerous arches and pillars in so grand array,
And your central girders, which seem to the eye
To be almost towering to the sky.
The greatest wonder of the day,
And a great beautification to the River Tay,
    Most beautiful to be seen,
Near by Dundee and the Magdalen Green. Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silvery Tay! That has caused the Emperor of Brazil to leave His home far away, incognito in his dress, And view thee ere he passed along en route to Inverness. Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silvery Tay! The longest of the present day That has ever crossed o'er a tidal river stream, Most gigantic to be seen, Near by Dundee and the Magdalen Green. Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silvery Tay! Which will cause great rejoicing on the opening day
