On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan
On Chesil Beach examines attitudes towards sexuality and relationships at the start of the 1960s. By the end of the decade both of these ideas were described as liberated. Just a few years earlier, people were still very much the children of their age. The fly cover of On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan describes the book as "a short novel of remarkable depth by a writer at the height of his powers". On Chesil Beach was recently short-listed for the Man Booker Prize, but lost out to Anne Enright’s The Gathering. I have read both books and, for me at least, what is so amazing is the mere fact that two such utterly different concepts could have been considered for the same prize. It is reassuringly astounding that the "genre" of literary fiction can be home to every style, every emotion, every approach, every outcome, everything imaginable and much that is real.
Those who write book blurbs are often prone to hyperbole. The greatest, the best, the most, the biggest, the most superlative are terms of mundane commonplace. The term "best selling" is usually an empty platitude. "Real" often signifies "very", but without the latter’s imagined meaning. So what can we make of "a short novel of remarkable depth by a writer at the height of his powers"? In the case of On Chesil Beach this blurb is an understatement, but it is essentially accurate and justified. If I were to write a blurb for this Ian McEwan novel, I would use a single word: masterpiece.

The Making of Lists
By Dwight Garner It’s list-making season in the book world – you can find the Book Review’s roster of 100 Notable Books of the Year here – and that’s as true in the U.K. as it is on this side of the Atlantic. This past weekend, the Times of London named some of its favorites: Novel of the year: “On Chesil Beach,” by Ian McEwan.
Biography of the year: “Stanley: The Impossible Life of Africa’s Greatest Explorer,” by Tim Jeal.
Pop book of the year: “Tearing Down the Walls of Sound: The Rise and Fall of Phil Spector,” by Mick Brown.
Gardening book of the year: “Dream Gardens,” by Tania Compton and Andrew Lawson.
Cookbook of the year: “Persia in Peckham: Recipes from Persepolis,” by Sally Butcher. Meanwhile, the Guardian asked a group of writers to name the best thing they’d read all year. (Find the full list here .) A few of the responses: David Hare: “Five Germanys I Have Known,” by Fritz Stern.

So they were eating in their rooms before partially open French windows that gave onto a balcony and a view of a portion of the English Channel, and of Chesil Beach with its infinite shingle. Two youths in dinner jackets served them from a trolley parked outside in the corridor, and their comings and goings through what was generally known as the honeymoon suite made the waxed oak boards squeak comically against the silence. Proud and protective, Edward watched closely for any gesture or expression that might have seemed satirical. He could not have tolerated any sniggering. But these lads from a nearby village went about their business with bowed backs and closed faces, and their manner was tentative; their hands shook as they set items down on the starched linen tablecloth. They were nervous, too. Page of Print E-Mail Feeds

(Ian McEwan's Saturday seems a suitable book to post about today!)
Henry Perowne is a successful neurosurgeon. Yet he wonders if there has not to be more to life than merely saving lives? The discipline and responsibility of medicine crowds out the inventiveness and freedom that he feels is missing from his life.
Unable to sleep, he looks out the bedroom window early on a Saturday morning and sees what looks a plane on fire, blazing through the sky, descending to an uncertain future.
The book follows Perowne through his eventful day. Early morning conversations with his jazz-playing son, driving through the central London streets, an aggressive altercation after a scrape in the car, playing squash with a competitive colleague, visiting his mother and calling in at rehearsals to hear a new song. All the while, anti-war protesters are marching nearby through the capital.
Perowne seems to be increasingly on the back foot as the day progresses, more and more out of control with events. Familiar tasks and patterns are more complicated today. Even looking out the window brings the possibility of seeing tragedy. His actions too - including the minor offence of driving across a road closed to traffic - have consequences for the rest of his day. And perhaps for his family too. Yet his mind remains rational and clear - at odds with the manic world around him. Even when threatened, he can't help but diagnose the illness of his attacker.

We may have turned the page on 2007, but these literary treats of the year gone by are worthy of a second glance.
"On Chesil Beach" by Ian McEwan
With "On Chesil Beach," McEwan solidifies his place as one of the 21st century's master storytellers. Recounting a newlywed couple's first forays into intimacy, both physical and emotional, "On Chesil Beach" is stunning and controversial in its sheer, unapologetic honesty.
"The Diving Bell and the Butterfly: A Memoir of Life in Death" by Jean-Dominique Bauby
After suffering a stroke in 1995, the French editor of Elle magazine was left nearly incapacitated by a rare condition known as locked-in syndrome, in which a patient is fully aware but unable to move or communicate due to complete paralysis (a result of a sever brain stem lesion). To complete "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," Bauby was read a frequency-ordered alphabet until he blinked, indicating choice of a specific letter. The novel chronicles his everyday experiences with locked-in syndrome and attains a resiliency and legacy the reader will likely never forget.
