John D(ann) MacDonald (1916-1986) American mystery writer, one of the great names of the genre, who establish his name in the pulps. MacDonald created his famous series character Travis McGee in his forty-fourth novel THE DEEP BLUE GOOD-BY in 1964, and went on to write twenty-one books about the most "colorful" of all unlicensed private detectives - each novel in the McGee series contains a color in the title. The awarded mystery writer and critic H.R.F. Keating selected MacDonald's THE GREEN RIPPER (1979) in 1987 for his list of the one hundred best crime novels. "The twenty-odd McGee books... are, in fact, perhaps our best example of the crime story as a novel of feelings. In this it is not unfair to compare MacDonald to Charles Dickens, although Dickens had of course an infinitely wider range. But it is Dickens the novelist of feelings, of sentiment, and of sentimentality, that MacDonald brings to mind." (Keating in John D. MacDonald was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania. He received his B.S. degree from Syracuse University in 1938, and earned a Harvad M.B.A. in 1939. In 1937 he married Dorothy Mary Prentiss; they had one son. During World War II he served in the Office of Strategic Services (1940-46), the forerunner of the CIA, and in the Burma-China-India theatre. He began during this time write fiction, and sold later all kinds of stories - sports, science, adventure, fantasy - to a number of magazines. His first story was published in

Best known as the creator of Travis McGee , John Dann MacDonald was one of the last of the old pulpsters to continue writing fiction successfully, making a name for himself in the burgeoning paperback market of the fifties, and continuing to appear on the bestseller lists well into the eighties in fact. In his long career, he produced over seventy books, mostly in the hardboiled/crime vein, although he did produce some decent work in science fiction, romance and other genres. He even produced some notable non-fiction, particularly No Deadly Drug , a true crime book, and The House Guests , a cat's eye view of the world. He was born in Pennsylvania, and received his MBA at Harvard, but moved to Florida after World War II. While stationed in the Far East, to amuse himself he wrote a short story, and sent it to his wife. His wife loved it, and supposedly without MacDonald's permission, submitted it to the prestigious slick, Story, where it was accepted. Inspired by this success, MacDonald decided to become a writer, and upon his return Stateside, he wrote hundreds of stories, mostly for the pulps. He continued to pump them out, until, as he put it, "the last of them were shot out from under me." Fortunately, just as the pulps were dying out, MacDonald was able to catch the rising wave of the paperback boom. From 1950 until he released his first Travis Mcgee novel, he published over forty PBO's, all stand-alones. His crime novels of this period are masters of the form spare, tight, often dark and even nasty tales of desperate men in way over their heads; taut morbid fables with psychological underpinnings and a burgeoning environmental awareness, often set in his adopted state of Florida. It was these books that served him well when he finally unleashed his series character, the colourful and larger-than-life

John D. MacDonald's Lush Landscape of Crime
By Jonathan Yardley Tuesday, November 11, 2003; Page C01 An occasional series in which The Post's book critic reconsiders notable and/or neglected books from the past. For my money, John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee is one of the great characters in contemporary American fiction not crime fiction; fiction, period and millions of readers surely agree. There are, as is announced across the top of each Fawcett Crest paperback volume in the series, "32 Million Travis McGee Books in Print!" Most of the other crime novels that MacDonald wrote over his long and astonishingly prolific career have been consigned to out-of-print oblivion in many cases most undeservedly so but Travis rolls along, keeping MacDonald's memory alive and reminding us that he was a far more accomplished and important novelist than is generally recognized.
John MacDonald was unfairly pigeonholed as a genre writer.

Any plausible-looking person can find many ways to come and go unimpeded. Anything that can be flown or floated can be brought in or taken out. We are but a wide place in the road in the middle of the world, and they wander through, back and forth, marveling at the lack of restraints. It is a paradox. The openness which endangers our system is the product of the policy which says that to close our borders and enforce all our rules and back them up with guns would change the system just as completely as any alien force. Terrorism is going to pay us one fat bloody visit. But it will only be a visit. They underestimate our national resilience. Aroused by that kind of savagery, we will become a very tough kind of people." John D. MacDonald. Taken from "The Green Ripper" 1979.
