Martine Ponting was born on May 14th, 1976, in Hackney, a borough in London's East End. Jenny, her mother, was an unwed teenager and her father, Thomas, was an alcoholic market trader. It wouldn't have been so bad if Thomas didn't resort to domestic violence. The police had to make frequent visits to their home and Jenny took her 2-year-old daughter away as they fled Thomas.
But the man sometimes tracked them down and threatened Jenny and daughter Martine. Along the way, Jenny met John McCutcheon and together they raised Martine, who took her stepfather's last name. When she was 9, a judge formally denied Thomas parental visits.
Martine dreams of My Fair Lady
During their frightened moments, Jenny and Martine found solace in watching old musicals like My Fair Lady. Martine knew from the start that she was destined to be an entertainer. And she had an early start: when she was only 6 weeks old, she was on television for the first time in a Party Political Broadcast.
At age 4, Martine had ventured into the world of advertising and appeared in commercials for Pears soap and Kool-Aid. When she was 10 years old, she wanted to perfect her acting skills at the Italia Conti drama school.

John McCutcheon: The Christmas Truce
December 23rd, 2007 A reminder that a different world is possible: Here are the words
The Christmas Truce -
By J ohn McCutcheon My name is Francis Tolliver, I come from Liverpool,
Two years ago the war was waiting for me after school.
To Belgium and to Flanders to Germany to here
I fought for King and country I love dear.
The frozen fields of France were still, no Christmas song was sung,
Our families back in England were toasting us that day,
Their brave and glorious lads so far away. I was lying with my messmate on the cold and rocky ground
When across the lines of battle came a most peculiar sound
As one young German voice sang out so clear.
Soon one by one each German voice joined in in harmony
The cannons rested silent, the gas clouds rolled no more As Christmas brought us respite from the war. As soon as they were finished and a reverent pause was spent And in two tongues one song filled up that sky.

A Banjo and a Backpack
by Jim Newsom Many of John McCutcheon’s generational peers decided to play guitar after seeing The Beatles on Ed Sullivan in 1964. But McCutcheon had his musical epiphany a year earlier. "I remember in 1963, that summer," he told me recently, "my mom was supposed to take me to Little League practice. We lived out in the country and I was looking all over the farmhouse for my mom. She was watching something on TV, which was really a decidedly unmotherly pose for her. I said, ‘Mom, we gotta go to practice!’ "And without ever taking her eyes off the screen, she kind of patted the sofa and said, ‘Yeah, we’ll be done in a minute. Just sit down on the sofa and watch this with me.’ "Now the only thing more unmotherly than my mother watching television was her encouraging me to sit down and watch it. So I was intrigued by this. What she was watching was the first thing that was ever broadcast live on all three networks—it was the march on Washington. "My mother was a social worker before she had children and she was really interested in this. Now this was up in northern Wisconsin where the only black person that any of us knew was Henry Aaron. So I sat and watched it with great fascination—this was obviously an event that was staged by, dominated by and presided over by blacks, which was totally new for me. There were preachers preaching unlike anything I’d ever heard in church. And there was this music that was old and urgent at the same time. I was just fascinated by the whole scene. That was my introduction to folk music.

From Shakespeare to . . . John McCutcheon?
I've been contemplating the day ahead - which I took as a vacation day. Woo hoo! After taking care of some pressing items this morning, I'm going to have me a niiiiice looong bike ride. It's gorgeous out today and with the onset of cold, dark fall breathing down my neck, a sunny 80-degree day is not going to waste.
Plus, there's nothing better than getting outside on a ride, run or walk to get the old grey matter working in sync with the heart again. At the moment, that pipeline seems obstructed by the daily grind. One of my favorite quotes - which never fails to hold true:
If you are seeking creative ideas, go out walking. Angels whisper to a man when he goes for a walk. - Raymond Inmon A good idea, for at the moment, I am stuck like a broken record on Shakespeare's Sonnet 29 - just this first section:
When in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes

Folksinger John McCutcheon at WLV High School this Saturday night
A bearded man lightly plucks a deceptively simple arpeggio on his guitar. His voice carries a coat of cannon oil, carries the echo of guns set aside for one December night. The melody is vintage John McCutcheon - tight, rhythmic, with gentle curves around minor corners. The lyrics are poignant, peaceful, the story of the Christmas Truce of 1914 on the Western and Eastern fronts of World War I. "One of John's many gifts is story-telling," says Pat Leahan, director of the Las Vegas Peace and Justice Center. "One of his best known songs, Christmas in the Trenches, is a true story about how soldiers on opposite sides of the war come together on Christmas Eve, transcending boundaries for that one night. It's a powerful story told in a beautiful and poignant way by John."

21 January 2006, 1:29 AM When I tell people about John McCutcheon, I always forget to mention the one song that people who aren't parents and aren't into folk music are likely to have heard of: " Christmas in the Trenches lyrics ), the song about the World War I Christmas truce . See also the following books: But I think the reason I always forget to mention that song is that, honestly, I don't like it that much. Partly the song itself just doesn't appeal to me as much as a lot of his others; partly it's that I've heard it a lot, 'cause he performs it at nearly every concert (and I've been to a bunch of his concerts), and it's on three of his albums that I own. And partly it's that the song makes me feel sad and angry and frustrated and helpless. Because it's about a wonderful, amazing, hopeful event that happened in the trenchesin 1914. And the song suggests that we can learn a lesson from that event. But as far as I can tell, in the last 91 years, we haven't really come any closer to learning that lesson.

He wants to find a way to get more funding for research. John sent me a thank you card after the story aired and on the front of the card it says, "say it, fight it, cure it." He talked with me during the initial interview about when he was first diagnosed he stepped back and said "ok, now what do we need to do to fight this." The answer he found was the same answer lung cancer and many cancer patients have been getting for decades, chemotherapy. For lung cancer patients, even with chemotherapy the statistics are grim. It the most common cause for cancer-related death in the U.S. But John isn't giving up. Right now he's looking for ways he can help the cause, and he's going through experimental treatments that could help others one day.
