http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/English/angela.html
Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt "When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I managed to survive at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood." So begins the luminous memoir of Frank McCourt, born in Depression-era Brooklyn to recent Irish immigrants and raised in the slums of Limerick, Ireland. Frank's mother, Angela, has no money to feed the children since Frank's father Malachy, rarely works, and when he does he drinks his wages. Yet Malachy does nurture in Frank an appetite for the one thing he can provide: a story. Perhaps it is a story that accounts for Frank's survival. Wearing shoes repaired with tires, begging a pig's head for Christmas dinner, and searching the pubs for his father, Frank endures poverty, near-starvation and the casual cruelty of relatives and neighbors yet lives to tell his tale with eloquence, exuberance and remarkable forgiveness.

Now and then, if readers are lucky, a book succeeds so thoroughly that its author is doomed to spend the rest of his career working in its shadows. Even more dramatic is the impact of such a debut. In 1996, Angela's Ashes , both critically acclaimed (the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award) and hugely popular (more than two years on the New York Times bestseller list, translated into thirty languages) transformed Frank McCourt from a retired schoolteacher into one of the premier storytellers of his generation.

GREAT WRITER, LOUSY TEACHER?
August 30, 2007 FRANK McCourt taught English for 30 years, mostly at Stuyvesant HS, before he won the Pulitzer Prize for his memoir "Angela's Ashes." But not all of his students give him high marks. At a recent UrbanDaddy Web site party on Hudson Street, investment banker Fred Kwon Baird Jones he studied with McCourt in 1986. "He was very self-absorbed," Kwon recalled. "Many students did not show up, and when they did, they would be talking during class. I felt really bad for him." Kwon said McCourt was obsessed with James Joyce, the impenetrable author of "Ulysses" and "Finnegans Wake." "He was the only writer we read," Kwon said. "McCourt would say we were useless, or that we were not ready to be educated. Sometimes he would stop talking for 15 minutes and he would just read the paper . . . When I heard he won the Pulitzer, I was shocked. Maybe because he was such a bad teacher he had to become a great writer. Yin-yang." McCourt's agent didn't respond to requests for comment.

(CBS) Long before he gained fame as the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book "Angela's Ashes," Frank McCourt was a high school teacher in New York City.
Now, his 30 years in the classroom provides fodder for his latest book, "Teacher Man."
"That was the big chunk of my life, 30 years," he told "The Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith Tuesday morning. "Because I know and you know and everybody knows teachers get very little attention in the USA. That any movie you see about a teacher is unrealistic. And I've never written a novel that dealt with the inside life of a teacher, the teacher in the classroom. And I wanted to get into the classroom and show what it's like from day to day, from minute to minute.
In the schools, he says, the students are "the veterans" and "the substitute teacher in the school system is the lowest form of life."

Commencement Speech, 1999
Connecticut College
Frank McCourt
I could talk about myself, and then if I talk about myself, I am talking about you, because although I never had the experience that you are having, I did go to college, but I never went to high school. I skipped that. You could have done that too if you were wise. I did it, and if I can do it anyone can do it. And that's why I feel a little guilty standing here this morning. I feel nervous because I am in the presence of such accomplished people, such educated people. This class sitting before me, your minds are brimming with the knowledge you have gained in the last four years. You have gained facts and skills, and I hope that there is a strong underpinning of wisdom, and nudging the wisdom aside is a sense of adventure, which I hope you will have. Because it doesn't end here. You might go for a masters or you might go for a Ph.D., but even then it doesn't end. I didn't know when I landed in New York at the age of 19 what was going to happen to me. I had no idea whatsoever. There was no one standing there inviting me to come to Connecticut College. As a matter of fact, I think if I had applied here they would have laughed and turned me away because I didn't have any credentials. I didn't know what I was going to do. I floundered awhile, like many immigrants. I am sure some of you had people in your family like that — your parents, your grandparents, people who came to this country who floundered awhile and then found a place in American society.

Frank McCourt
Frank McCourt's 1996 memoir about growing up in poverty-stricken Ireland in the 1930s and 1940s touched the lives of people all over the world. "Angela's Ashes" quickly flew to the top of the New York Times bestseller list and remained there for 115 weeks, selling more than 4 million copies worldwide. The memoir received the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for biography and the LA Times Book Award, along with many others. McCourt then published a sequel to the book in 1999, entitled "'Tis," which continues the story of his life as an immigrant in New York.
Born in Depression-era Brooklyn in 1930, McCourt and his family moved to Limerick, Ireland, when he was four. As he recounts in "Angela's Ashes," McCourt spent the next 15 years in poverty. His alcoholic father abandoned the family when McCourt was 12, and his mother, Angela, struggled to hold the family together.

http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/la/community/executives/fmccourt.html
Frank H. McCourt, Jr.
Owner and Chairman Frank H. McCourt Jr. is the fourth owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Officially taking the reins of the storied franchise after receiving unanimous approval from Major League Baseball on Jan. 29, 2004, he became just the second person in club history to solely own the franchise.
Since the onset of his tenure, McCourt has focused the Dodger organization on bringing championship baseball to Los Angeles, making Dodger Stadium the most entertaining, family-friendly venue in the country, and expanding the Dodgers’ involvement throughout the Greater Los Angeles community.
In his first year, the Dodgers won their first division title in nine years, earned their first playoff berth since 1996 and won their first postseason game since 1988. Despite a difficult sophomore year, the hiring of Ned Colletti as the new general manager and Grady Little as the new field manager infused much energy and talent into the 2006 club and the Dodgers reached the postseason for the second time in three years.
Immediately following the conclusion of the 2005 season, in an effort to preserve one of the great architectural icons of Los Angeles, McCourt began the second phase of a multi-year restoration of Dodger Stadium. This included replacing all 50,000 seats in the bowl, returning to the original color palette and the introduction of a traditional yet modern “box” seat concept along the baseline. During the 2006 season, more than 3.7 million fans visited Dodger Stadium, setting an all-time franchise attendance record and lending testimony to the fact that the ballpark experience is second-to-none.

Frank McCourt writes about his experiences as a High School teacher over the space of 30 years as well as one very humbling year teaching at a Community College. He also writes about his failed attempts at obtaining a Ph.D., a degree he had hoped to receive in order to ascend to the ranks of college professors instead of trying to find creative ways to motivate largely disinterested and hormonally challenged High School students day in, day out, year in,...
