Blood and time: Cormac McCarthy and the twilight of the West
TYPE Review BY Roger D. Hodge PUBLISHED February 2006 VIEW PAGES PDF That is no country for old men. The young
In one another's arms, birds in the trees
—Those dying generations—at their song,
The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas,
Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long
Whatever is begotten, born, and dies.
Caught in that sensual music all neglect
Monuments of unaging intellect.
—William Butler Yeats,
“Sailing to Byzantium” Cormac McCarthy's novels are messages from lost worlds, artifacts of vanished histories to which his readers by some necromancy are made privy. His characters are solitaries, fugitives from the present who go forth into the rotten holdings of the vanquished in search of something they cannot name. McCarthy's narrative voice bespeaks a master of the trade, a strange traveler from a distant land who has taken it upon himself to keep a drowsy emperor awake by singing of what is past, passing, or to come.

The Road
by Cormac McCarthy Knopf, 241 pp. CLR Rating:
The Road – Through a Shattered Looking Glass Darkly
Post apocalyptic novels are a dark, bleak and often illuminating genre that are highlighted by titles that include The Day of the Triffids A Canticle for Leibowitz Eternity Road On The Beach and Galapagos . J.G. Ballard carved out a large section of this wasted landscape with The Crystal World The Drowning World The Burning World and The Wind From Nowhere . But among all of these fine works and dozens more I’ve read, none compares, holds a candle to or rings such gloomy, bleak chords as does Cormac McCarthy’s The Road ; all accomplished with an economy of words that is beautiful in its execution. The story follows a father and son as the they wander, stagger, and grope their way through a burned over, scarred America. Little moves within this incinerated landscape that is smothered in ash driven by a cold wind. The snow is grey. Rivers run thickly clogged with ash and soot. The trees are black skeletons. The pair is heading for the Eastern coast with little hope of finding anything. Anything. Period. They have nothing save a pistol and a handful of bullets to defend themselves against the bands of ravenous ghouls who maraud the roads and heat-buckled Interstates like bizarre, merciless highwaymen. And they have the ragged clothes they’re wearing and a cart of scavenged food. And they have themselves.

What this connection between versions provides instead is an opportunity for readers to divorce themselves from the trappings of plot and immerse themselves in the rich and meaningful prose that Cormac McCarthy uses to create the glorious, sweeping Texan vistas and dark, claustrophobic encounters between life and death. The conversations in No Country for Old Men When Llewellyn explores his windfall: He folded the loose hundreds and put them in his pocket and then packed the rest of the banknotes into the case again and set the case in the chair and sat there looking at it. When Chigurh tends to his wounds: When he went back into the bathroom he stripped one of the syringes out of the plastic wrapper and sank the needle through the seal into the vial of tetracycline and drew the glass barrel full and held it to the light and pressed the plunger with his thumb until a small bead appeared at the tip of the needle.

CORMAC MCCARTHY'S LIFE IN BOOKS The Orchard Keeper After college, McCarthy went to Chicago, where he worked as an auto mechanic while writing his first novel, The Orchard Keeper
The Orchard Keeper
was published by Random House in 1965. McCarthy's editor there was Albert Erskine, William Faulkner's longtime editor. The Orchard Keeper is set in a small, remote community in rural Tennessee in the years between the two world wars. It tells of John Wesley Rattner, a young boy, and Marion Sylder, an outlaw and bootlegger who, unbeknownst to either of them, has killed the boy's father. Together with Rattner's uncle Ather, who belongs to a former age in his communion with nature and his stoic independence, they enact a drama that seems born of the land itself. All three are heroes of an intense and compelling celebration of values lost to time and industrialization.
Before publication, McCarthy received a traveling fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which he used to travel to Ireland. In 1966 he also received the Rockefeller Foundation Grant, with which he continued to tour Europe, settling on the island of Ibiza.
