(Reviewed by Mary Whipple JAN 11, 2004) "Let us never forget just how bad things were! Let us refuse to be gagged and each of us live up to our own responsibilities!.Make no mistake! Joey Tallon will show you the way! He will not shirk from facing his demons as he pleads with you now to confront your own! In that way shall the ocean be seen to part and out of its depths the Temple emerge! The Temple of Colossal Dimensions, my citizens!" It’s also his best since ‘The Butcher Boy’, the 1993 classic whose scatological first person narrative welded black midlands humour to lurid comic strips, Irish balladry, Huckleberry Finn and ‘A Clockwork Orange’. That book’s impact was roughly analogous to ‘Trainspotting’ in the UK; it became the dragon any young Irish writer with a taste for the dark stuff had to slay – or at least circumnavigate –before gaining admittance to the literary crypt. If McCabe were any lesser a talent, he might’ve been condemned to spending the rest of his career trying to match it.

McCabe was born on March 27, 1955, in Clones, County Monaghan, where as a child he became fascinated by Marvel comics and classic films noirs and Westerns at the local picture-house. From the age of 12 he was sent to boarding school at the austere St Macartan’s College. Having trained as a teacher in Dublin, during the 1970s he taught in a primary school in Longford and played in a country-and-western pub band, while also writing poems and short stories. McCabe’s first success came in 1979 when his short story “The Call”, about a young man fresh out of teacher-training college, won the Irish Press Hennessy Award. Some of his early radio plays were also produced by RTE in Ireland and BBC Radio 4. McCabe’s first book-length work to be published was the children’s story
