McBain, Ed. The gutter and the grave. New York: Hard Case, 2005. 217pp.
Another dynamite reprint from Hard Case , this one a classic Ed McBain from 1958. The Gutter and the Grave is a story about a man, Matt Cordell, done wrong by a cheatin' woman who gets another chance to be a real man and help a friend solve a petty crime. Well, the friend ends up accused of murdering his business partner, so Matt ends trying to clear his friend. Lots of gorgeous dames and tough talking ensue, a couple of surprises at the end and Cordell gets his chance to rise up from the gutter and ends up...well, read the novel to find out what happens to him.
They don't get any more hard boiled than this. At 217 pages, another short sharp shock from the fine folks at Hard Case. Next!

Main July 07, 2005 Evan Hunter Michael Blowhard writes: Dear Blowhards I was very sorry to see that the crime novelist Evan Hunter who was probably better-known as Ed McBain died of cancer on Wednesday, at the age of 78. I've only read four or five of Hunter's many, many books, but I'm completely convinced that he was a giant. His fiction has a distinctive tone a combo of thuggish brutality and sophisticated, melancholy courtliness. His stories are street-wise and soulful, canny and exciting, both hardboiled and operatic. And they're full of living, breathing characters. Hunter had an amazing career that lasted more than 50 years. He was born Salvatore Lombino in New York City and changed his name to Evan Hunter in 1952. He wrote under the names Evan Hunter and Ed McBain, and under many other pseudonyms too. He was nothing if not a workhorse. He wrote ten hours a day, seven days a week; he tried to average eight finished pages a day. He published his first novels in the early 1950s, while he was still in his 20s, and kept it up until very near the end; a new Ed McBain novel is scheduled to be published in September of this year. One estimate of how popular Evan Hunter was puts total worldwide sales of his books at around 100 million copies.

Written by Fiona Walker Known to most readers by the pseudonym Ed McBain, Evan Hunter was a true giant among crime writers, the author who all but created the genre of the police procedural. His death in 2005 may have deprived the world of one of the 20th century’s finest literary talents, but his multitude of works will live in perpetuity. Born Salvatore Lombino in Manhattan in 1926, the man who would become Hunter served in the Navy from 1944-1946 and attended Hunter College on his return. After a series of jobs which included teaching and working for a literary agent, he legally changed his name to Evan Hunter in 1952, the year his first novel was published. Four years later, he published Cop Hater under the pseudonym Ed McBain, the first book in the series that would be his greatest triumph.
