  • Cop Hater
"There have been a number of recent attempts at establishing an American type of police-routine novel patterned after such TV programs as 'Dragnet' or 'Line-Up.' Much the most successful of these efforts to date is Ed McBain's 'Cop Hater.'"
  • The Mugger
". . .[an] even better book [than 'Cop Hater.']"
  • The Pusher
    ". . . seems to mark a slight let-down in Ed McBain's excellent 87th Precinct novels . . ."
  • Lady Killer
". . . one of the most effective performances yet in this fine series."
  • King's Ransom
"[H]ere am I once more saying, 'McBain has done it again.' . . . It's as immediate and convincing as any of the 87th Precinct tales, and a little more (in the best sense) theatrical than most."
  • Give the Boys a Great Big Hand

After an absence of many years, the anonymous madman known as the Deaf Man returns to plague the detectives of the 87th Precinct in general and Steve Carella in particular. What the Deaf Man has in mind is a complex pay-or-die extortion scheme, with politicians from the parks commissioner to the mayor as targets. It's really all a smokescreen for the Deaf Man's real crime, but what could that possibly be? As the Deaf Man brings his plans closer and...

This is a cop drama in McBain's 87th Precinct series. It's set in a fictional city in the northeastern US. A killer is on the loose and 2 detectives are out to find out who it is and how the deaths of a drug dealer, a dancer, and a jewelry salesman are linked together. There are various subplots and a full cast of cops working on other assignments. This is my first 87th Precinct book and it doesn't seem like you need to read them in any order, althou...

If you get the idea from this page that I don't like Ed McBain's work, you're dead wrong and jumped in the wrong direction. He himself made the same mistake, so how could I blame you? Get this: He's among those writers I always buy, and enjoy enormously. The things on this page merely show, once again, how nobody's perfect.
As explained elsewhere , I started reading McBain merely because he had written King's Ransom , on which Akira Kurosawa based his, as McBain and I agree, best movie, Tengoku to Jigoku - High and Low . What did I know. But I soon found out he's worth it, just like Kurosawa must have thought. He also wrote (as Evan Hunter) Blackboard Jungle and The Birds and several other movies. But let us keep this short and refer to the list below . As always, except for the funny things. Then, people have been searching the site for " mistakes by Ed McBain ", and I've obliged.

I'm just wondering if McBain as ever been to this town. I live there and he describes it perfectly as a small town where everyone knows everyone elses business. I'd love to know how he came to pick this town. marlene abela - 05:10am Mar 19, 2004 PST(#
